Notices

Stonework repairs to St. Dunstan’s
Good progress is being made on the masonry repairs. Work will continue until the beginning of August and we continue to do our best to minimise any disruption to Sunday services. Morning Prayer and the Thursday Communion service are still being held at the Rectory until further notice whilst the church is closed during the week to visitors. The total cost of the work will be in excess of £20,000 and we have been successful in securing almost all of the funding for this from grants. I apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused and please feel to chat with me or Keith Gibbons about any questions you may have. James

‘Open House’ at the Rectory, 8pm Monday July 7th
This is a chance to explore and to ask questions of faith in a relaxed and friendly environment. Please come along to watch a short DVD followed by a time of discussion. James

In the beginning…
This is a funny and lively retelling of the Book of Genesis by the Searchlight Theatre Company. The performance will take place at the newly refurbished Baptist Church in Bell Street, Princes Risborough on Thursday July 10th at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7 each (Family ticket £15 for 2 adults & 2 children under 18 from the same family) and available from Pat Kimber by telephoning 01844 273942.

Friendship Group
We meet in the church hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 2.30 pm. The next meeting is Wednesday 16th July.

Silent Prayer Meeting, Monday July 21st at 8pm:
We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. All are welcome to these meetings of any faith or none. The meeting starts in the church hall with some simple relaxation exercises, a short passage from the Bible to reflect upon in the half hour of silence, followed by a time of sharing of our experiences if people wish. St. Dunstan's Fellowship
The next walk is on Tuesday 22nd July – please meet in the layby off the A4010 at 9.15am. Knit-ins will be in the Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month at 2.00pm.

World War One Commemoration Service
A special service will be held at St. Dunstan’s Church on Sunday August 3rd at 6 pm, the eve of the outbreak of war. The service will include readings, music, prayers and hymns to help us to reflect upon this tragic event.

Bucks Historic Churches Trust Ride or Stride, Sept 13th
St Dunstan’s has received £11,500 in 2014 from this charity towards repairs to be carried out on the stonework. Please help by raising money as a sponsored rider or walker. If you would be interested in participating or organising a group, please contact Rosemary Woodward Court on 01844 344417 for riders, or Morna Hinch on 01844 345169 for walkers. P.S. There are 12 participating churches/chapels to visit within a 4 miles radius of St. Dunstan’s (with no steep hills).

Say Farewell to Bishop John
At the Diocese of Oxford’s Grand Day Out on Saturday 20th  September, 2014: 10.00 – 17.00, Oxford City Centre, everyone is invited to give thanks for Bishop John’s ministry among us, for prayer and worship, a feast of different activities, a massive picnic on Christ Church Meadow and a huge open-air farewell Eucharist. News at St. John’s Church, Lacey Green
As announced last week the new Team Vicar is Rev Tony Bundock. He is presently serving as the Rector of Leeds in the Minister Church (St Peter's) and heads up the Leeds City Team of Churches. He has had plenty of experience of working in Teams and is looking forward to joining us in October as the new Team Vicar at St. John's. His Licensing service has been booked with Bishop Alan Wilson of Buckingham for Thursday 23 October. James

Representative for Lighthouse for St. Dunstan’s needed
This involves: - attending committee meetings, ensuring your church's flyers etc. are distributed, helping to recruit volunteers, supporting fundraising events mainly through promoting them in church, if possible volunteering in some aspect during the week, supporting and promoting Lighthouse prayer meetings. This is an important role so that St Dunstan’s can support fully the excellent work of the Lighthouse Christian Holiday Week for children. If you would like more information please speak with James.

Further works completed and anticipated
The outside of the church hall has now been redecorated so that it looks like new! The inside has also been touched up to refresh its appearance. By the end of the month it is hoped that work will have started to create the path into the churchyard extension followed by the final levelling and seeding of this area as wild meadow that will slowly be brought in to use as a burial site.

Morning Prayer will take place at The Rectory on Mondays (except Bank Holidays), Wednesday and Thursday at 8.45 whilst repairs to the stonework of St. Dunstan’s are being undertaken.

Notices

Stonework repairs to St. Dunstan’s
From June 23rd for approximately six weeks stone masons will be carrying out essential stonework repairs to the inside and outside of the church to ensure that the building continues to be well maintained. Work will take place from Monday to Friday and therefore there shouldn’t be any disruption to Sunday services although we will need to celebrate Communion in front of the chancel screen, possibly use the Clavinova and the church will be closed to visitors for part or all of this six week period. Morning Prayer and the Thursday Communion service will however need to be held at the Rectory until further notice. A further grant of £5000 has now been promised from the Wolfson Foundation towards the costs of the work. I apologise in advance if any inconvenience is caused. James

Public Reading Workshop, Saturday 5th July 10 – 11.30
David Powell has offered to lead a public reading workshop in the Church on Saturday 5th July starting at 10.30 am.  This workshop is not restricted to just those on the current sidesperson rotas.  Indeed it might just be that it is the very thought of having to stand-up and read in public which has been deterring you from taking on this role!  Not to be confused with public speaking, public reading is really so much easier as someone else has already written your script!

In most countries this year Trinity Sunday again coincides with Fathers’ Day. Today we can celebrate fatherhood and see God as a loving Father, yet also remember that (like many families) the Trinity is a complex relationship – difficult to understand, but based on love.

Public Meeting - regarding Mill Lane Developments

A public meeting has been called by Princes Risborough Town Council regarding the Mill Lane Developments, including Molins, Kingsmead and also an update on the Local Plan. The meeting is to take place on Friday 20th June at 7pm in the Princes Centre, Clifford Road. All are welcome to attend.

Churchyard annual working party

On Saturday June 21st, 9 am to 12 noon, there is an opportunity for everyone to come along to help trim/strim paths, prune hedges/bushes, uproot weeds, cut down trees, etc. Please bring along whatever garden tools you feel might be useful as we seek to maintain the beauty of the churchyard at St. Dunstan’s. James

Princes Risborough Baptist Church
Everyone is invited to come to a celebration of their new building and refurbishment project on Saturday May 24th at 3.00 pm. The celebration will include a dramatized presentation of ‘voices from the past; words for today’.

St. Dunstan's Fellowship
Knit-ins” will be in the Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month at 2.00pm. The next walk is on Tuesday 27th May – please meet in the layby off the A4010 at 9.15am.

Charity Costume Show
There will be a 1960's charity fashion show at St Mary's Church Hall in aid of The Shaw Trust on Saturday 31st May at 3pm and 7pm.Tickets £10 from Sally's Sewing Box and The Shaw Trust.

Bucks Arts Week Cream Teas
We will be serving cream teas from the church hall from 2.30 - 4.30 on June 14th/15th and June 21st/22nd over the two weekends of Bucks Open Studios. I am looking for two volunteers to help serve, make teas and wash up for each session.  We also need a small number of cakes.  If you are able to bake a cake for either weekend please let me know.

Visit to Worcester Cathedral
This years’ visit to a cathedral city will be on Wednesday June 18th. Full details are in the current newsletter. The coach will leave the lay-by in Monks Risborough at 9:15 am, drop us by the cathedral at about 11.30 am and return to the lay-by in Monks Risborough at approximately 8.30 pm. Please bring a picnic or enjoy the refreshments offered by the cloister café by the cathedral. The cost of the trip is £25 which includes the tour of the cathedral with cheques payable to Monks Risborough PCC. In the beginning…
This is a funny and lively retelling of the Book of Genesis by the Searchlight Theatre Company. The performance will take place at the newly refurbished Baptist Church in Bell Street, Princes Risborough on Thursday July 10th at 7.30pm. 4th Deanery Synod Representative
We still have a vacancy for a 4th representative to serve on the Deanery Synod for three years. Deanery synods form a vital link between the local, diocesan and national church. There are three meetings to attend each year together with the PCC meetings held at this church. This position enables you to find out about the wider work of the church and the meetings of the General Synod. Lifts are usually shared to Deanery Synod Meetings. Christian Aid Week, May 11th – 17th
Princes Risborough Baptist Church will host the Churches Together in Risborough Christian Aid Service tonight at 6pm. House to house collections will be made in as many streets as possible. It is worth noting that nationally these donations raise 75% of all money taken during the week. The usual Friday Lunch, with stalls, will take place at the Princes Risborough Baptist church hall on 16th May, from 12 noon. All funds donated during this week will be sent to Christian Aid Headquarters for distribution.

A morning for Sidespeople and Lesson Readers
On Saturday 17th May, from 10 - 11.30, in church, starting with refreshments, the morning will be a 'thank you,' a learning opportunity and a time for those who are experienced and to encourage those new to the role.  With 'top tips' from David Powell and discussion, all who come are assured of an interesting and helpful time.  We look forward to seeing you. As always the success of this event depends on your generous donations of salads and desserts. This years’ visit to a cathedral city will be on Wednesday June 18th. Worcester is a beautiful city with the river Severn running through it. There will be a tour of the cathedral at 3.00 pm as well as opportunities to visit some of the many other attractions such as the Worcester Porcelain Museum, The Commandery to learn about the English Civil War, and Greyfriars House and Garden (National Trust). There are also 45 minute trips along the Severn run by Worcester River Cruises and Choral Evensong in the cathedral at 5.30 pm. The coach will leave the lay-by in Monks Risborough at 9:15 am, drop us by the cathedral at about 11.30 am and return to the lay-by in Monks Risborough at approximately 8.30 pm. Please bring a picnic or enjoy the refreshments offered by the cloister café by the cathedral. Stonework start date: June 23rd
The necessary permissions have been received for the repairs to the external and internal stonework to begin on June 23rd. It is anticipated that whilst the work is being carried out that it will be ‘business as usual” in terms of the church’s services and activities. A site meeting will be held later this month after which a further update will be issued with any further information. James

First Reading        Acts 10 v 34-43
In the house of a Roman centurion, Peter shares what God taught him in a vision:  that forgiveness of sins is offered to all, whatever their background, if they believe in Jesus Christ, whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit and raised from the dead.
 
Second Reading       Matthew 28 v 1-10
On Easter morning an angel rolls the stone away and tells the two women that Jesus is risen and they must tell others. Jesus himself repeats the instructions, and both reassure them there is nothing to fear.

God of glory, by the raising of your Son you have broken the chains of death and hell: fill your Church with faith and hope; for a new day has dawned, creation is restored, and the way to life stands open in our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Second Sunday of Easter

“Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord”’ (John 20:18). As we come before our Lord in worship and thanksgiving, let us seek the strength and courage he offers that we may live his risen life.

First Reading        Acts 2 v 14a & 22-32
On the day of Pentecost, Peter talks compellingly to those in Jerusalem about the continuation of their historic faith in the work of Jesus, now risen from death
 
Second Reading       1 Peter 1 v 3-9
The writer seeks to encourage Christians who are suffering persecution, urging them to stand firm in their faith and reminding them of the imperishable inheritance to which they are heirs in Jesus Christ.

Gospel John 20 v 19-end
The risen Jesus appears to his fearful disciples and offers them the gift of his peace. The absent Thomas doubts what his fellow disciples have witnessed, but is finally convinced when Jesus appears to them again.

Prayer of the Week
O God, worker of wonders, you made this day for joy and gladness. Let the risen Lord abide with us this day, opening the Scriptures to us and breaking bread in our midst. Set our hearts aflame and open our eyes that we may see in his sufferings all that the prophets spoke and recognise him at this table, the Christ now entered into glory, first–born from the dead, who lives with you now and always in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

• Peace, justice and stability in Ukraine, Syria and other countries affected by violence, war or civil strife
• All those affected by the recent ferry disaster in South Korea – for those who died, for those missing, for those who mourn them, for those who search for them

 St. Dunstan's Fellowship
The next walk is on Tuesday 22nd April – please meet in the layby off the A4010 at 9.15am. Knit-ins” will be in the Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month at 2.00pm.
On May 8th at 8pm in the Church Hall, Susanne Carr will be talking about Paintings in the National Gallery of Scotland. Everyone is welcome and refreshments are by Pam Scott and Pat Kimber.

A morning for Sidespeople and Lesson Readers
On Saturday 17th May, from 10 - 11.30, in church, starting with refreshments, the morning will be a 'thank you,' a learning opportunity and a time for those who are experienced to encourage those new to the role.  With 'top tips' from David Powell and discussion, all who come are assured of an interesting and helpful time.  We look forward to seeing you. Patronal Festival Barbeque
Our Patronal Festival Barbeque will be held on Sunday 18th May 2014 starting at 12.30 pm, after the morning service which will start at 11.00 am on this day. Tickets are available from Jane or Keith Gibbons (01844 344113) priced at £7 for adults and £3 for the first child in each family aged between 5 and 16 years old. As always the success of this event depends on your generous donations of salads and desserts. There is a list on the notice board in the church porch for you to sign if you are prepared to donate a dish. Help is also required to pre-cook the chicken on the Sunday morning. To avoid any disappointment, please buy your tickets and sign the list for salads and desserts as early as possible.

Visit to Worcester Cathedral
This years’ visit to a cathedral city will be on Wednesday June 18th. Worcester is a beautiful city with the river Severn running through it. There will be a tour of the cathedral at 3.00 pm as well as opportunities to visit some of the many other attractions such as the Worcester Porcelain Museum, The Commandery to learn about the English Civil War, and Greyfriars House and Garden (National Trust). There are also 45 minute trips along the Severn run by Worcester River Cruises and Choral Evensong in the cathedral at 5.30 pm. The coach will leave the lay-by in Monks Risborough at 9:15 am, drop us by the cathedral at about 11.30 am and return to the lay-by in Monks Risborough at approximately 8.30 pm. Please bring a picnic or enjoy the refreshments offered by the cloister café by the cathedral. The cost of the trip is £25 which includes the tour of the cathedral with cheques payable to Monks Risborough PCC. Free Entry to Westminster Abbey
I have again secured a pass that allows up to four people free entry to Westminster Abbey (the normal adult price is £18). If you would like to borrow this pass please let me know. James.
