Prayer for the Week
God of the ages, you call the church to keep watch in the world and to discern the signs of the times. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Notices

Further works at St. Dunstan’s
The path to the churchyard extension will be seeded with grass so we’ll need to avoid walking on this to enable the grass to establish itself. This will be followed by the creation of a wild meadow. We have also learnt that the condition of the stained glass windows above the high altar at the East End of the church has unfortunately deteriorated. These windows were meant to last for about 100 to 150 years and were erected in the early 1860s as part of the Victorian restoration. The glass will need to be taken out and the lead seals replaced. This also seems a sensible time to clean and restore the tracery panel glass at the top of the windows either side of where the choir sits which have become blackened over time. This is probably the oldest medieval glass there is in the church. All of this work is likely to cost in the region of £9,000 - £16,000. The work is essential for the East End windows which are already buckling, bulging, leaking and cracking. The work is likely to be carried out in 2015 once the necessary permissions and funding have been arranged. James

‘Open House’, Monday September 8th at 8pm at the Rectory
Under the umbrella of “The Jesus lifestyle” we shall took at a series of DVDs that looks at the radical teaching found in the Sermon on the Mount and apply it to the 21st century. The first talk examines modern day ideas of happiness and our relationship with God. The DVD last approximately 35 minutes and leaves plenty of time for discussion at the end. Everyone is welcome. World War One Commemoration
This continues on the 11th day of each month at 11 am on September 11th with a short act of commemoration and commitment to peace at the war memorial at the top of Mill Lane. The church bell will also be tolled 100 times on each of these occasions.

St. Dunstan's Fellowship
On September 11th, Sally Corfe will speak about “Dignity & Hope in Cambodia”. Please meet in the Church Hall at 8.00pm – everyone is welcome. The next walk is on Tuesday 23rd September – please meet in the layby off the A4010 at 9.15am. Knit-ins will be in the Church Hall on the 4th Thursday (September 25th) of each month at 2.00pm

Bucks Historic Churches Trust Ride or Stride, Sept 13th
St Dunstan’s has received £11,500 in 2014 from this charity towards repairs to be carried out on the stonework. Please help by sponsoring those taking part. If you would be interested in participating or organising a group, please contact Rosemary Woodward Court on 01844 344417 for riders, or Morna Hinch on 01844 345169 for walkers. Distribution of stewardship leaflet, Sunday Sept 14th
This leaflet has been put together to enable us all to review how we contribute to the life of St. Peter’s and St. Dunstan’s. We have tried to address this leaflet personally to everyone in the congregation but inevitably I’m sure that someone will have been missed off the list so please accept my apologies in advance! Next seasonal service booklet
Having introduced new booklets for Easter and Ordinary Time, the next new booklet will cover Advent. The recommendation to the PCC which meets on Monday September 15th is to continue the use of contemporary language for the liturgy and the Addington mass setting for the music. If you have any comments please can you let a PCC member, Rob or I know. James

Friendship Group
We meet in the church hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 2.30 pm. The next meeting is on 17th September.
       
The Bethany House Group
Following the summer break, the Bethany House Group will start again on September 24th at 10.30 am to 12 noon at the home of Mrs. Su Viney, 76 Westmead. There will be 5 fortnightly sessions on some of the ‘minor’ prophets: led by Rose Williams. Further details are available on the card leaflet on the table.

Harvest Festival Services and the Whitechapel Mission
As in previous years we are delighted to accept your donations for the work of the Whitechapel Mission at or before the Harvest services at Owlswick on Sunday September 28th at 6 pm and St. Dunstan’s on Sunday October 5th at 11 am. The Whitechapel Mission provides hot food and drink, showers, clothing, free toilets and the chance of a wash and brush-up to homeless people in London. To enable its work to continue please log on to their website www.whitechapelmission.org.uk, click on ‘donate’ and scroll down to ‘donations in kind’ for a list of the things most desperately needed. Harvest Lunch
This takes place on Sunday 5th October from 12 noon onwards at the Scout Hall, Courtmoor Close off Mill Lane, Monks Risborough. Tickets are 6.00 per adult and children under 18 £1.00, available from Pat Kimber at Church or by telephoning 01844 273942.

Confirmation service at St. Dunstan’s
On Sunday November 23rd at 6 pm there will be a confirmation service at St. Dunstan’s led by the Bishop of Buckingham, Alan Wilson. Confirmation marks an important stage in the Christian journey and has often been the entry point to receive Holy Communion. Some sessions will be organised after the summer holidays to prepare for the confirmation. If you are interested in being confirmed please let James know.

Eleventh Sunday after Trinity

Let us come to God, in the name of Jesus and in the power of the Spirit, to bring our praise, worship and prayers and to receive his word and sacrament.

First Reading        Jeremiah 15 v 15-21
Jeremiah, the faithful prophet, complains to God. The Lord demands that he continue to speak God’s word and he will be delivered.
 
Second Reading        Romans 12 v 9-end
Paul, writing to the Roman Church, exhorts his readers to live by radical values of self-giving.

Gospel        Matthew 16 v 21-end
Jesus predicts his violent death. Peter tries to rebuke him but is in turn rebuked by Jesus. Jesus goes on to say that all who seek to follow him must first take up the cross.

Pictures of the recently completed stone works are on display in the porch so that you can ‘spot the difference’ and see where repairs have been carried out. Help required for the Fun Day, September 6th (2.00-4.30)
This was a huge success last year with record crowds turning to enjoy a most enjoyable afternoon of activities and refreshments. A lot of help is needed in a variety of ways:

• Sign up on the sheet in the porch if you can set up, serve or help clear up with the refreshments, provide a cake(s)
• Prizes and bottles can be left in the church for the raffle and bottle stall respectively
• Cakes, home produce and plants can be brought along on the day to be sold 
• Deliver flyers – please take some and sign the distribution list by the south door
• Help Mick White (346536) to collect and put up tables, chairs

Cathy Farquhar is organising the refreshments and can be contacted on 343226. James.

The Great Monks ‘Bake Off, Saturday September 6th
As part of the Fun Day there will be a cake making competition open to all ages. The entry is simply either four cup-cakes or an 8” cake based on a film, story or cartoon.
There will be a prize for all entries and a 1st prize in each of the following age groups: under 7, 8-12, 13-18 and adult. Entries will be judged by appearance and taste and need to be submitted by 3 pm (the fun day opens at 2 pm). Winners will be announced at 4.15 pm. Paul writes vividly of the hardships he and other apostles undergo as they bear witness to Christ’s resurrection.

Gospel        Luke 22 v 24 -30
Jesus teaches the disciples that they must follow his example and be humble servants of others, not seeking power and glory for themselves.

Confirmation service at St. Dunstan’s
On Sunday November 23rd at 6 pm there will be a confirmation service at St. Dunstan’s led by the Bishop of Buckingham, Alan Wilson. Confirmation marks an important stage in the Christian journey and has often been the entry point to receive Holy Communion. Some sessions will be organised after the summer holidays to prepare for the confirmation. If you are interested in being confirmed please let James know.

Stonework repairs to St. Dunstan’s completed
Pictures of the recently completed works are now on display in the porch so that you can ‘spot the difference’ and see where repairs have been carried out. James

World War One Commemoration
A special service will be held at St. Dunstan’s Church on Sunday August 3rd at 6 pm, the eve of the outbreak of war. The service will include readings, music, prayers and hymns to help us to reflect upon this tragic event. This will be followed on the 11th day of each month at 11 am starting on August 11th with a short act of commemoration and commitment to peace at the war memorial at the top of Mill Lane. The church bell will also be tolled 100 times on each of these occasions.

Lights out - a national moment of reflection on August 4th 2014
Lights out is an invitation to everyone in the United Kingdom to participate in a shared moment of reflection by turning off their lights from 10pm to 11pm on 4th August, leaving on a single light or candle, to mark the 100th anniversary of when Great Britain entered the First World War. There are numerous local events being planned around the country with a national service being held in Westminster Abbey and broadcast by the BBC. Special WW1 commemorative candles can be purchased at M&S stores or online for the occasion with all profits going to the Legion.

St. Dunstan's Fellowship
On August 14th at 8.00pm in the Church Hall, Malcolm Dodds will speak about a “Tanzanian Charity”. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments – Sue McKay. The next walk is on Tuesday 26th August – please meet in the layby off the A4010 at 9.15am. Knit-ins will be in the Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month at 2.00pm    

Friendship Group
We meet in the church hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 2.30 pm. The next meeting is Wednesday 20th August.

Help required for the Fun Day, September 6th (2-4.30)
This was a huge success last year with record crowds turning to enjoy a most enjoyable afternoon of activities and refreshments. A lot of help is needed in a variety of ways:

• Sign up on the sheet in the porch if you can set up, serve or help clear up with the refreshments
• Sign up on the sheet in the porch if you can provide a cake(s) for the refreshments
• Prizes and bottles can be left in the church for the raffle and bottle stall respectively
• Cakes, home produce and plants can be brought along on the day to be sold 
• Distribution of flyers which will be available next week
• Help Mick White to collect and put up tables, chairs etc.

Cathy Farquhar is organising the refreshments and can be contacted on 343226. James.

The Great Monks ‘Bake Off, Saturday September 6th
As part of the Fun Day there will be a cake making competition open to all ages. The entry is simply either four cup-cakes or an 8” cake based on a film, story or cartoon.
There will be a prize for all entries and a 1st prize in each of the following age groups: under 7, 8-12, 13-18 and adult. Entries will be judged by appearance and taste and need to be submitted by 3 pm (the fun day opens at 2 pm). Winners will be announced at 4.15 pm. Stonework repairs to St. Dunstan’s completed
Good progress has been be made on the masonry repairs. The work has finished a week ahead of schedule and is more or less within budget. Morning Prayer and the Thursday Communion service will be held in the church again and the church is open to visitors. Thank you for your patience and understanding whilst the work has been undertaken and to Keith Gibbons who has overseen the project. Pictures of the works that were necessary will be on display in the porch so that you can ‘spot the difference’.  The works are still to be signed off by the architect so there may still be one or two minor pieces of maintenance to be carried out. Representative for Lighthouse for St. Dunstan’s needed
This involves: - attending committee meetings, ensuring your church's flyers etc. are distributed, helping to recruit volunteers, supporting fundraising events mainly through promoting them in church, if possible volunteering in some aspect during the week, supporting and promoting Lighthouse prayer meetings. This is an important role so that St Dunstan’s can support fully the excellent work of the Lighthouse Christian Holiday Week for children. If you would like more information please speak with James.

Further works completed and anticipated
The outside of the church hall has now been redecorated so that it looks like new! The inside has also been touched up to refresh its appearance. By the end of the month it is hoped that work will have started to create the path into the churchyard extension followed by the final levelling and seeding of this area as wild meadow that will slowly be brought in to use as a burial site.

Notices

Stonework repairs to St. Dunstan’s
Good progress continues to be made on the masonry repairs. Work will continue until the beginning of August and we continue to do our best to minimise any disruption to Sunday services. Morning Prayer and the Thursday Communion service are still being held at the Rectory until further notice whilst the church is closed during the week to visitors. The total cost of this project will be in excess of £20,000. I apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused and please feel to chat with me or Keith Gibbons about any questions you may have. Silent Prayer Meeting, Monday July 21st at 8pm:
We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. All are welcome to these meetings of any faith or none. The meeting starts in the church hall with some simple relaxation exercises, a short passage from the Bible to reflect upon in the half hour of silence, followed by a time of sharing of our experiences if people wish. The Next Few Weeks 

Morning Prayer will take place at The Rectory on Mondays (except Bank Holidays), Wednesday and Thursday at 8.45 whilst repairs to the stonework of St. Dunstan’s are being undertaken. On Wednesday July 23rd and Monday July 28th Morning Prayer will start at 8.15 to accommodate the school service and Lighthouse respectively.

God of the heavens, God of the earth, all creation awaits your gift of new life. Prepare our hearts to receive the word of your Son that his Gospel may grow within us and yield a harvest that is hundredfold. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen

Notices

Stonework repairs to St. Dunstan’s
Good progress continues to be made on the masonry repairs. Work will continue until the beginning of August and we continue to do our best to minimise any disruption to Sunday services. Morning Prayer and the Thursday Communion service are still being held at the Rectory until further notice whilst the church is closed during the week to visitors. The total cost of this project will be in excess of £20,000 and we have been successful in securing grants from the Wolfson Foundation and Bucks Historic Churches to cover the majority of this work. I apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused and please feel to chat with me or Keith Gibbons about any questions you may have. James

Friendship Group
We meet in the church hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 2.30 pm. The next meeting is Wednesday 16th July.

Silent Prayer Meeting, Monday July 21st at 8pm:
We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. All are welcome to these meetings of any faith or none. The meeting starts in the church hall with some simple relaxation exercises, a short passage from the Bible to reflect upon in the half hour of silence, followed by a time of sharing of our experiences if people wish. St. Dunstan's Fellowship
The next walk is on Tuesday 22nd July – please meet in the layby off the A4010 at 9.15am. Knit-ins will be in the Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month at 2.00pm.


World War One Commemoration Service
A special service will be held at St. Dunstan’s Church on Sunday August 3rd at 6 pm, the eve of the outbreak of war. The service will include readings, music, prayers and hymns to help us to reflect upon this tragic event.

Bucks Historic Churches Trust Ride or Stride, Sept 13th
St Dunstan’s has received £11,500 in 2014 from this charity towards repairs to be carried out on the stonework. Please help by raising money as a sponsored rider or walker. If you would be interested in participating or organising a group, please contact Rosemary Woodward Court on 01844 344417 for riders, or Morna Hinch on 01844 345169 for walkers. P.S. There are 12 participating churches/chapels to visit within a 4 miles radius of St. Dunstan’s (with no steep hills).

Say Farewell to Bishop John
At the Diocese of Oxford’s Grand Day Out on Saturday 20th  September, 2014: 10.00 – 17.00, Oxford City Centre, everyone is invited to give thanks for Bishop John’s ministry among us, for prayer and worship, a feast of different activities, a massive picnic on Christ Church Meadow and a huge open-air farewell Eucharist. News at St. John’s Church, Lacey Green
As announced last week the new Team Vicar is Rev Tony Bundock. He is presently serving as the Rector of Leeds in the Minister Church (St Peter's) and heads up the Leeds City Team of Churches. He has had plenty of experience of working in Teams and is looking forward to joining us in October as the new Team Vicar at St. John's. His Licensing service has been booked with Bishop Alan Wilson of Buckingham for Thursday 23 October. James

Representative for Lighthouse for St. Dunstan’s needed
This involves: - attending committee meetings, ensuring your church's flyers etc. are distributed, helping to recruit volunteers, supporting fundraising events mainly through promoting them in church, if possible volunteering in some aspect during the week, supporting and promoting Lighthouse prayer meetings. This is an important role so that St Dunstan’s can support fully the excellent work of the Lighthouse Christian Holiday Week for children. If you would like more information please speak with James.

Further works completed and anticipated
The outside of the church hall has now been redecorated so that it looks like new! The inside has also been touched up to refresh its appearance. By the end of the month it is hoped that work will have started to create the path into the churchyard extension followed by the final levelling and seeding of this area as wild meadow that will slowly be brought in to use as a burial site.
