Bible Study Group – ‘The Apprentice’
‘The Apprentice’ is a five session course that covers the following themes: journeying; longing; believing; questioning and belonging. Following a short DVD, a series of questions will help us to explore and discuss these various topics. The sessions will be held on Thursday evenings from 8.00 to 9.30 on the following dates at the following venues: October 13th (The Willows, Mill Lane); November 10th (The Rectory, Mill Lane); December 1st (The Willows); January 12th (The Rectory); February 9th (The Willows). Jesus chose to face his own death, realising that through doing so he would discover real life. He calls on us to take up our own cross in order to find such life for ourselves. In our worship today, let us explore the meaning of taking up our crosses to follow Jesus.

Visiting Westminster Abbey and 'pilgrim tours:
James has a pass that admits up to people free of charge; to the Abbey (normally £16 per adult). There is also the opportunity to visit the Abbey as part of a parish group on Wednesday evenings after the Abbey has closed for general visiting. These pilgrim tours begin at 6.15pm ending with Compline at 7.15pm and we could make a Parish group. Please speak to James if you are interested in either or both of these.

Living God, you sent your Son among us to reveal your wisdom and make known your ways. Increase our faith, that we may confess Jesus as your Son, take up his work on earth, and trust his promise to sustain the Church. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.
Your prayers are asked this week for:
• The Anglican Church in Uganda
• Finance ministers, economists and stockbrokers
• all those who have received A Level results this week
• judges, the police and all those who work in our courts and legal system
• Wycombe District Council, its officers and councillors.
• The proper management and use green spaces, parks and play areas.

Winchester News
Following on from our visit some of you may be interested to know Winchester hosts a very good German-style Christmas market, beside the cathedral, complete with ice-rink. Perhaps nearer the time, if a few people wanted to go, we could do this together. Watch this space!
Visiting Westminster Abbey and 'pilgrim tours:
I have managed to obtain a pass that admits up to four adults or young people up to the age of 18, free of charge; to the Abbey (the normal cost is £16 per adult). This pass may be used up to six times during a twelve month period. If anyone would like to take advantage of this offer please let me know. There is also the opportunity to visit the Abbey as part of a parish group on Wednesday evenings after the Abbey has closed for general visiting. These pilgrim tours take you around the Abbey hearing about its history and praying in its sacred places. The tours begin at 6.15pm ending with Compline at 7.15pm. Again if anyone is interested in making a group from this parish, please let me know. James

This year this is being held in the grounds of the church. We shall need helpers on the stalls and a rota of people to help with refreshments, along with offers of cakes and scones. Please sign on the two notices in the porch if you can lend a hand.
"Living Faith Worldwide"
This is taking place in Reading on Saturday October 15th from 10am to 4pm at St John's and St Stephen's Church and St John's (CE) Primary School, Orts Road, Reading. (http://www.oxford.anglican.org/the-door/news/living-faith-worldwide-conference.html). This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet with Christians from different parts of the world and to share ideas about how to take our place in the world church. It will have things of interest both for those who already have lively connections and for those who are interested to explore what is possible. There will also be sessions of interest to and appropriate for young people
Subsidised Insulation Offer
Wycombe District Council is promoting a special offer of £99 each for loft and cavity walk insulation (subject to conditions). Residents aged 70 or over who receive means-tested benefits may get the work done free. For more information call 0800 80 48 777 or see the poster in the porch.
TV Digital Switchover
'The long publicised TV Digital Switchover for the Risborough area takes place in two stages. Stage 1 takes place on 14 September when BBC1 and BBC 2 will no longer be available and you will have to retune your TV set or box. Stage 2 takes place on 28 September when the remaining analogue channels will go digital and you will need to retune your TV set or box again. You can find more information about this at www.digitaluk.co.uk. Whilst many of us may be getting frustrated with the continual adverts and mail about Digital Switchover because we are ready, please spare a thought for friends, family and neighbours who may not be so prepared, especially those who may be vulnerable due to age or infirmity. For many the television is their key contact with the outside world and it is important that they do not slip through the net. It is important to remember that digital switchover affects all of us, even those who only watch BBC and ITV. There is help for over 75s and registered disabled - the maximum they will need to pay for all equipment (even an aerial) is £40 and for many it is completely free. Everyone who is eligible for help will already have received two letters from the Digital Help Scheme already, but it is easy to overlook these. Please spare a thought for anyone you know who may need help - and ask them whether they are ready. • Those who have been rioting that they may find purpose and direction in their lives

Winchester Visit – THIS SATURDAY
We shall be having a guided tour of the Cathedral, which will include access to the Library to view the 12th Century Winchester Bible, and to the King James Bible Exhibition (celebrating its 400 year anniversary).We shall have the opportunity to attend Choral Evensong at 5.30pm. Please could you give me £20 by August 8th. We shall be leaving from the lay- by in Monks Risborough at 9.15 am. Please be there a few minutes before. We shall be back by approx 8.45pm. You will need to bring a packed lunch or make your own arrangements. There is a Cathedral restaurant /cafe, and the Cathedral is in the centre of the city with access to plenty of eateries. Today we remember that it is in the nature of God’s kingdom to grow. Trees grow from the tiniest of seeds and the kingdom spreads from the smallest of beginnings. May this both encourage and challenge us today!

The 3rd Sunday after Trinity
Jesus preached a new kingdom – a kingdom of love – and we come to celebrate all that it means. For one moment, set aside your questions, your doubts, your prejudices and your fears. Come into the presence of the king of heaven, and sing the praises of the one who has the power to transform both us and the world around.

O God, patient and forbearing, you alone know fully the goodness of what you have made. Strengthen our spirit when we are slow and temper our zeal when we are rash, that in your own good time you may produce in us a rich harvest from the seed you have sown and tended. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit God for ever and ever.
Your prayers are asked this week for:
All those affected by drought in East Africa; for the people of Syria and Libya, in the continuing conflict and unrest in their countries
All journalists and those who work in the media: that they may always carry out their work with honesty and integrity. Computer game developers – that they may act responsibly and not glorify violence.
All teachers and students as they approach the end of another academic year: may this be a time a refreshment and renewal

We need someone to assume a role that enables us to help ensure that the church premises are a safe place in which to worship and enjoy. No previous experience or knowledge of health and safety is required just a willingness to spend a little time highlighting potential hazards and seeing what corrective action (if any) might be taken. If you are interested in this role please have a chat with James
