Prayer for the week

Faithful God, your Holy One, Jesus of Nazareth, spoke the truth with authority, and you confirmed his teaching by wondrous deeds.  Through his healing presence, drive far from us all that is unholy, so that by work and deed we may proclaim him Messiah and Lord, and bear witness to your power to heal and save.  We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

•  Those facing conflict or unrest in Syria, Libya, Nigeria, Iran and Iraq
• those whose task is to be responsible for the financial welfare of our nation and for those looking after elderly people in care homes and hospitals
• The mission, ministry and congregational life of the Anglican Church of North India, and of St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s in this paris
• Residents of Westmead (MR) and  Longwick Road (PR & L)

Could you represent St Dunstan’s on the Lighthouse Committee?

The committee meets once a month from 8-10pm.  It comprises members of each of the churches in Risborough as well as representatives from the sub groups that make Lighthouse tick; craft, main stage, finance, fund raising etc.  Your role would be to ensure that St Dunstan’s has a voice in the running of Lighthouse and to drum up support in our own church community for volunteers and fund raising initiatives.  You don’t necessarily have to help during the actual Lighthouse week or even have young children yourself, but be enthusiastic for the concept! Bible Study Group – ‘The Apprentice’, February 9th

‘The Apprentice’ is a course that covers the following themes: journeying; longing; believing; questioning and belonging. Following a short DVD, a series of questions will help us to explore and discuss these various topics. The next session will be held on Thursday February 9th from 8.00 to 9.30 at The Willows, Mill Lane. All are welcome. James

Christian Aid AGM Feb 15th

Everyone is invited to the Christian Aid (Princes Risborough) AGM at 7.30pm in the Baptist Church Hall.  The meeting will be combined with a talk about the work of Christian Aid.

Flower Arranging Workshop February 18th

This is being run on Saturday from 10-12.30 in the church.  No experience required and minimal cost.  Please telephone Gwen Miles 01844 345230 if you are interested.

Small group, BIG QUESTIONS, February 24th, 10 am

Starting on Friday February 24th and running weekly up to March 23rd, everyone is welcome to come along to The Rectory at the top of Mill Lane, Monks Risborough from 10.00 to 11.30 to explore questions of faith and other aspects of Christianity. Come with your doubts, your hopes and your questions. As part of an informal group we aim to answer those questions that we all struggle with from time to time. Each week will start with some refreshments followed by a DVD to stimulate discussion and a time for people to listen, ask questions and share their thoughts. "Exodus: The Roaming Tour", Saturday 25th February

The highly acclaimed mime artist Steve Murray is coming to the Oasis Centre, Bell Street, Princes Risborough. “Steve Murray brings a unique and inspirational presentation of short performances that take you on a journey through Bible stories and life experiences.  From start to finish, you will feel entertained, moved, challenged and inspired as you enter into the wonderful world of human theatre". The evening starts at 7.30pm.  Ticket prices £7.50 (£20 family ticket) including refreshments.  Tickets are available from the Chiltern Christian Fellowship Church office on 01844 275822.

A ‘Pilgrim Tour’ of Westminster Abbey, Wednesday March 21st

I have managed to make special arrangements for a prayer pilgrimage at Westminster Abbey on Wednesday March 21st. We will meet in the ‘lay-by’ in Monks Risborough at 3.45 pm to travel up to London by coach to arrive at the Abbey after it has closed to the general public. We will join a Canon Steward for a ‘pilgrim tour’ which will take us around the Abbey hearing about its history and praying in its sacred places. The tour will begin at 6.15pm ending with Compline at 7.15pm. We hope to return to Monks Risborough at about 9 pm. The cost will be £12 for adults, £6 for your first child under 18 (subsequent children free). You may want to bring a ‘snack’ with you. Congratulations – MBE!

The director of the Whitechapel Mission, Tony Miller has been made an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours. Now in his 30th year at Whitechapel, Mr Miller said the award was a “fantastic honour” and he was looking forward to a really special experience at Buckingham Palace. “I am grateful to all those who work, volunteer, support and serve the Whitechapel Mission, as they are the true deservers of this recognition,” he said.

Prayer for the week

God of salvation, in the river Jordan you bathed your Son Jesus in glory and revealed him as your obedient servant.  In spirit and in power rend the heavens and come down to us.  Strengthen us to acknowledge your Christ, that we who are reborn in his likeness may walk with him the path of obedience.  Grant this through Jesus Christ, your Word made flesh, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, in the splendour of eternal light, God for ever and ever.

Thank you

Thank you to everyone who has helped to make the Christmas season such a special time. Many people have helped out with the additional services, bell ringing, singing in the choir, decorating both the inside and the outside of the church, providing refreshments and being involved in various other ways. Just fewer than 600 people attended the services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and 150 people attended the service of Nine Lessons and Carols the week before. Around £650 has been raised as a result of our special services and carol singing. May I wish you every blessing for the New Year. James

Christmas Decorations coming down, January 5th

The decorations /flower arrangements are coming down on Thursday 5th January 2012 at 10.15 a.m. as well as ladies a man or two would be helpful to get the tree down.

New choir director

I am delighted to announce that starting from January 11th we will be welcoming Diogo Cerdeira to the parish as choir director. We look forward to working with him as we build on the long standing musical tradition within the parish.

Fellowship Group Jan 12th  Coffee Morning

There will be no evening meeting but Janet is hosting a coffee morning from 10.30 – noon at 6 Dovecote Close.

Bible Study Group – ‘The Apprentice’

‘The Apprentice’ is a course that covers the following themes: journeying; longing; believing; questioning and belonging. Following a short DVD, a series of questions will help us to explore and discuss these various topics. The next session will be held on Thursday January 12th from 8.00 to 9.30 at The Rectory. All are welcome. James

Bob Reece has decided to retire from handling the advertising for the Newsletter after over 30 years!  We are looking for someone to take his place.  The work is to send out invoices annually to about 40 advertisers – and gently chase them up – sometimes! 

Adverts are usually prepared by the advertisers but suggestions are often welcomed. Further details can be got from Bob Reece (01844 346297) or David Kemp (01844 344097)

Applying for a Grant from Hody’s Charity

This was founded by a rector of St Dunstan’s Church, Monks Risborough in 1706, and added to by his successor Dr Quarles.  It provides grants for students in further or higher education or for apprentices who live in the parish or who are on the electoral roll.  Applicant must be <21 at the time of their first application and <25 years old on receipt of the last grant.  You can apply three times.  This is the time of year for applications.  Please call Rosemary if you would like to apply.  344417

When the Angel Gabriel told Mary she was favoured by God, he gave her the most difficult task in the world, but Mary instantly pledged her obedience.  In our worship today, let us listen for the song of the angels and the voice of God, and let us too pledge our obedience, whatever God should ask of us.

In a final climax to his book, St Paul proclaims Jesus Christ as God, the revelation of a mystery which was kept secret from human beings for aeons, but is now revealed to the whole world.

Here in our midst, O God of mystery, you disclose the secret hidden for countless ages.  For you we wait; for you we listen.  Upon hearing your voice may we, like Mary embrace your will and become a dwelling fit for your Word.  Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Prayer for the week

O God, most high and most near, you send glad tidings to the lowly, you hide not your face from the poor; those who dwell in darkness you call into the light.  Take away our blindness, remove the hardness of our hearts, and form us into a humble people, that, at the advent of you Son, we may recognise him in our midst and find joy in his saving presence.  We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

•  For the leaders of the European nations as they seek to ease the financial crisis
•  For the people of Egypt and of Syria, as they seek freedom and justice

Christingle 2011 – wow!
Thank you to everyone who came along to help last Saturday at the Christingle making factory. In total 200 Christingles were made in record time. The service itself was attended by around 230 people and around £500 will have been raised for the work of the Children’s Society. Rosemary and James

There is also some time for the children to play, adults to chat and refreshments to be served. On the 4th Thursday of the month we meet in the Church for an additional special craft activity. Applying for a Grant from Hody’s Charity
This was founded by a rector of St Dunstan’s Church, Monks Risborough in 1706, and added to by his successor Dr Quarles.  It provides grants for students in further or higher education or for apprentices who live in the parish or who are on the electoral roll.  Applicant must be <21 at the time of their first application and <25 years old on receipt of the last grant.  You can apply three times.  This is the time of year for applications.  Please call Rosemary if you would like to apply.  344417

End of year service
There will be a service of Evening Prayer on December 31st at 5pm to provide an opportunity to give thanks for the year that is about to pass and to ask for God’s blessing as we journey through 2012. James
