The Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Candlemas)

As Joseph and Mary with Jesus entered the Temple and the presence of almighty God, so we do likewise today as we come to worship him.

The Holy Family come to the Temple in Jerusalem for the ritual purification of Mary after the birth of her child. In the Temple Simeon and Anna attest the unique nature of the baby Jesus.

O God, teach us the hidden wisdom of the Gospel, so that we may hunger and thirst for holiness, work tirelessly for peace, and be counted among those who seek first the blessedness of your Kingdom. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen

• The peoples of Syria, Ukraine, the Central African Republic and Nigeria. For an end to military action, political divisiveness  and religious intolerance

Copies of a draft Parish Eucharist for Easter
Following a meeting of the worship group, my sermon two weeks ago and the recent PCC meeting we have some copies of the updated order of service for the Parish Eucharist for the season of Easter. If people could share these around, pass their comments on to the worship group and put the copies back on the table so that others can have a look at them that would be very helpful. The service focuses on the resurrection and in due course it is hoped that there will be other services produced to cover most of the season’s in the church’s year e.g. Lent and Advent. Thank you, James and Rob.

New PCC members required
The Church Annual Meetings take place on Monday April 7th at 8.00pm. This is the time at which new members are elected on to the Parochial Church Council (PCC). If you are interested in becoming a member of the PCC please speak with James for a nomination form. After three very valuable years Sue Ingram is stepping down as churchwarden so we are also looking for a successor to replace her.

St. Dunstan's Fellowship
On Thursday 13th February, we are holding a members evening “Winter Warming Music”, in the church hall at 8 pm. Refreshments: Morna Hinch. The next walk is on Tuesday 25th February – please meet in the layby off the A4010 at 9.15am. "Knit-ins" will be in the Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month starting at 2.00pm.

Friendship Group
We meet in the church hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 2.30pm. The next meeting is Wednesday 19th February.

Bethany House Group
This meets on a fortnightly basis on a Wednesday at 76 Westmead, Monks Risborough at 10:30 am. On the table by the main door are pink cards giving details of the various sessions on ‘Angels’. Then in March the group will meet weekly during Lent for a course entitled ‘Build on Rock’. Everyone is welcome. James

‘The Big Dig’ Talk – March 8th at 7 pm
Following the archaeological dig in 2013 at St. Dunstan’s, Jill Eyers who was in charge of the dig has agreed to come back to give a talk on “The Monks of Monks Risborough - the story as seen from the Big Dig at St Dunstan's”. The talk will be held on Saturday March 8th in the church. Tickets are £5 and are available from Pat Kimber (01844) 273942. A complimentary glass of wine/soft drink will be served as part of the evening with the chance to ask questions at the end of the talk. If you would like extracts of the electronic copy of the report of the dig that has been compiled please send an email to James. If you do not have access to e mail but would like to see parts of the report please can you buddy up with a person who does have internet access so that they can let you have sight of them. James

Silent Prayer Meeting, Monday February 3rd at 8 pm
We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. All are welcome to these meetings of any faith or none. The meeting starts with some simple relaxation exercises, a short passage from the Bible to reflect upon in the half hour of silence, followed by a time of sharing of our experiences if people wish. Saturday February 8th 2014, 7.30pm
A concert by the Ealing Symphony Orchestra with the outstanding violinist Nicola Benedetti at All Saints Church, High Wycombe. The programme includes Brahms’s Violin Concerto and extracts from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty. Tickets are £15 (accompanied under-16s £1) from www.ealingso.org.uk/concerts.php or from our organist Rowena.

Paul entreats the Corinthians to set aside quarrels and partisan loyalties, and heed his preaching, by rejecting human wisdom to unite round the cross of Christ that expresses the power of God. 

Gospel      Matthew 4:12-23
After John the Baptist’s arrest, Jesus begins his public ministry in Capernaum, preaching repentance in response to God’s coming kingdom. He calls four fishermen to follow him. They immediately leave their livelihoods and become his disciples.

Following the theft last month we have received an anonymous donation to enable us to buy a new paten (small plate) and two new chalices. If you wish to make a contribution to the replacement of one of the chalices please can you let James know.

Community Open Social Afternoon
This is for all residents of Risborough & its surrounds. This takes place on Saturday 1st February 2014 in the Community Centre Main Hall (off Stratton Road, opposite Mount Car Park exit) commencing at 2pm, doors open from 1.15pm. Entry £3 per person to include refreshments. Tickets are available from the David Shuttle shop in Duke Street or Arthur Edwards. Any surplus after covering expenses will be donated to the Princes Centre, our selected charity*. All members of our community are welcome and you will be supporting our chosen charity for this event. Event promoted by Risborough & District Community Association. Second Sunday of Epiphany

God says “it is not enough!” until Jesus Christ has been revealed as saviour for all the earth. Let us join together to rejoice in his coming and to proclaim aloud his glory.

First Reading      Isaiah 49 v 1-7
The identity of the servant in Isaiah's mind is a great mystery, but the message is clear: at the very time when God's people thought exile had become their shameful end, God reveals a plan far beyond their imagination.

Second Reading      1 Corinthians 1 v 1-9
Paul's vision of the Church was huge: "all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." In this phrase we have the universal and the particular: There is no boundary but that of confessing the name of Christ.

Gospel      John 1 v 29-42
John's picture is astonishing: a solitary prophet points to another man who single-handedly will take away the sin of the whole world. John didn't even know how big the world was – yet he knew Christ was bigger!

This group meets every six to eight weeks on different evenings to explore various issues of faith. Each evening begins with a DVD. The next meeting is on Thursday January 22nd at 8 pm at the Rectory. All are welcome. For more information please contact James

Report on the Archaeological Dig
The archaeological dig has now been formally completed and the report compiled. It is not possible to give out paper copies of the report as it is over 230 pages long! There are however two particular parts that are shorter. These focus on the historical background to the parish and how the archaeology fits in to this time frame. If you would like an electronic copy of this please send an email to James. If you do not have access to e mail but would like to see these two parts please can you buddy up with a person who does have internet access so that they can let you have sight of them.

Community Open Social Afternoon
This is for all residents of Risborough & its surrounds. This takes place on Saturday 1st February 2014 in the

4. 4pm – brief R&DCA AGM reports from Chairman/Secretary & Treasurer, election of officials followed by AGM adjournment.

Second Reading      Matthew 2 v 1- 12
The story of how wise men from the East, having seen a star, travel to Bethlehem to pay homage to Jesus. Herod pretends to want to worship Christ, and asks the wise men to tell him when they have found him. But after seeing the child and presenting their gifts, they are warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, so they return by another route.

Prayer for the Week
Lord God of the nations, we have seen the star of your glory rising in splendour. Thank you to everyone who has decorated the church, provided refreshments or helped out with the various events and services as part of our Christmas celebrations. This has all been enormously appreciated and created a lovely community spirit. At the Chinnor Silver Band Concert on December 18th over £1150 was raised and in the week leading up to Christmas Day we welcomed around 1,200 people to the services held in the parish.

New Chalice and Paten
Following the theft last month we have received an anonymous donation to enable us to buy a new paten (small plate) and two new chalices. If you wish to make a contribution to the replacement of one of the chalices please can you let James know.

First Sunday of Christmas

Today we hear how God keeps Jesus safe from the threat of Herod until Herod himself has died. Together let us proclaim the gracious deeds of the Lord who delivers his people from the slavery of sin.

We hear that Jesus can identify with us, his brothers and sisters, because he has shared our humanity. He can help us because he understands us and came to bring reconciliation between us and God, our heavenly Father.

Gospel       Matthew 2 v 13-end
God warns Joseph of Herod’s intention to kill Jesus and tells him to seek refuge in Egypt. Only when Herod is dead can the family return to Israel and settle in Nazareth.

Fourth Sunday of Advent

Advent is a time of many familiar symbols and signs of our faith in Emmanuel, God’s Son who was sent to us for our salvation. In all we do, let’s be reminded again of the greatest sign of God’s saving love and life with us, the birth of Jesus.

A young woman’s pregnancy was a sign of God’s presence in and to the world, working against known order and bringing forth the child to be called Emmanuel.

Paul: set apart to serve as an apostle of the Gospel, yet called with us by God’s grace and the Holy Spirit’s power to belong to Jesus Christ as God’s people.

The source of the child Emmanuel was in God the Holy Spirit. God provided an angel’s message so that Joseph could be sure that the familiar norms were being transformed by the presence and power of God.

Gospel     Matthew 11 v 2-11
John the Baptist, in prison, seeks reassurance as to Jesus’ identity. Jesus challenges the crowds concerning John and the work God called him to do.

Safeguarding (children and vulnerable adults) officer required 
We are looking to find a person to be our Safeguarding Officer.  This involves making sure that any activities we carry out with children or vulnerable adults are done safely and in accordance with guidelines, for example, ensuring that everyone on the rota for Sunday School has been through the Disclosure and Barring procedure. It would also be helpful to find someone who could support the Safeguarding offer, taking on some of the basic administration and paperwork, keeping lists up to date and so on.  Susanne Dodds (342746) would be happy to discuss this with anyone who might be interested.

‘Serving’ at St. Dunstan’s
We need to recruit one or two more adults or children to help assist the priest at the altar, holding the red Gospel book and carrying the cross as part of the procession. Without obligation, if you think you might be interested please speak with James or Sheila

Following the theft last month we have received an anonymous donation to enable us to buy a new paten (small plate) and two new chalices. If you wish to make a contribution to the replacement of one of the chalices please can you let James know.

Wedding
Mr and Mrs Wade welcome friends and people from the parish to attend the wedding service of Katie and Adam on Monday 23 December at 14.30pm.

Help required for Christmas refreshments
In the weeks running up to Christmas we aim to provide drinks and refreshments for a variety of services and events. These all centre on mulled wine, mince pies and soft drinks. The details and approximate timing when the refreshments need to be served are below:
After the choir, church and community carol singing on December 16th (8.00 in the hall); During the interval of the Chinnor Silver Band concert on December 18th (8.45 in the church).

St. Dunstan's Fellowship - Change of Date
Please note that the Coffee Morning will be on Wednesday 8th January 2014 (not Thursday) from 10.00am - 12.00 at the home of Janet Griffin, 6 Dovecote Close, Monks Risborough. (There will be no evening meeting during January). Thank you, Pam Scott.

Friendship Group
We meet in the church hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 2.30pm. The next meeting is Wednesday 18 December.

Carol Singing around the village
On Monday December 16th meeting at 6.30 pm at St. Dunstan’s everyone is invited to come carol singing around the village with the church choir to help raise money for charity. At about 8.00pm refreshments will be served. If you enjoy singing please come along – singers of all standards are welcome!

Candlelight Concert – December 18th at 8pm
Last year this was a sell-out and the Chinnor Silver Band have been invited back again to perform their wonderful festive music and to enable others to sing some carols. Tickets are £7.50 available from Pat Kimber (273942) or David Shuttle in the High Street in Princes Risborough. Complimentary glass of wine/soft drink and a mince pie

Fundraising for the Princes Centre:
M&S have kindly allowed The Princes Centre to do an
in-store fund raiser over four days in the run up to Christmas. The idea is to have volunteers at the end of each checkout offering to help pack customer's shopping; in return it is hoped that some loose change will be put in the strategically placed buckets! The Princes Centre is looking for volunteers to cover a two hour shift during the following days/periods: Saturday 21st Dec: 10.00 - 12.00, 12.00 - 14.00, 14.00 - 16.00; Sunday 22nd Dec: 10.00 - 2.00,
12.00 - 14,00, 14,00 - 16.00; Monday 23rd Dec: 08.00 - 10.00, 10.00 - 12.00, 12,00 - 14.00, 14.00 - 16.00; Tues 24th Dec: 08.00 - 10.00, 10.00 - 12.00, 12.00 - 14,00, 14.00 - 16.00. Anyone who is able to help should contact Kim at the Princes Centre 01844 345105, as she is co-ordinating the rota.
