Sunday 27th July 2014
Sixth Sunday after Trinity

Jesus said to his disciples, “The kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 10:7). As we come before God in praise and worship, we pray for purity of heart and clarity of vision, so we will be enabled to live in his kingdom.

10.00 am          Parish Eucharist
Hymns: 474, 225 & 352
Psalm: 119:129-136
Communion: 196, 245, 924

Anthem: Drop, drop, slow tears, O. Gibbons
First Reading        1 Kings 3 v 5-12
The Lord appears to Solomon in a dream, and asks what he should give the king. Solomon asks for discernment and an understanding mind, that he may rule the people justly and wisely.

Second Reading        Romans 8 v 26-39
Paul assures his readers that God works for good in all that happens, and that the Spirit is a constant presence to aid them in their weakness. Ultimately, there is nothing that can separate the believers from the love of God in Jesus Christ.

Gospel        Matthew 13 v 24-30 & 36-43
Using an intensive cascade of short parables, Jesus attempts to convey to his disciples something of the elusive, exhilarating reality of the kingdom of heaven.

6.00 pm            Lighthouse Commissioning Service (see notices)

Prayer for the Week
God of eternal wisdom, you alone impart the gift of right judgement. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked in the coming weeks for:

  • All those who lost their lives in either the Malaysia Airlines disaster or the Air Algerie plane crash; for comfort and strength for all who loved them.
  • Peace in all the troubled areas of the world and especially for an end to the loss of life in Israel and the Gaza Strip:

Stonework repairs to St. Dunstan’s

Good progress is being made on the masonry repairs. Work will continue until the beginning of August and we continue to do our best to minimise any disruption to Sunday services. Morning Prayer and the Thursday Communion service are still being held at the Rectory until further notice whilst the church is closed during the week to visitors. The total cost of the work will be in excess of £20,000 and we have been successful in securing almost all of the funding for this from grants. I apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused and please feel to chat with me or Keith Gibbons about any questions you may have. James

Representative for Lighthouse for St. Dunstan’s needed
This involves: - attending committee meetings, ensuring your church's flyers etc. are distributed, helping to recruit volunteers, supporting fundraising events mainly through promoting them in church, if possible volunteering in some aspect during the week, supporting and promoting Lighthouse prayer meetings. This is an important role so that St Dunstan’s can support fully the excellent work of the Lighthouse Christian Holiday Week for children. If you would like more information please speak with James.

Further works completed and anticipated
The outside of the church hall has now been redecorated so that it looks like new! The inside has also been touched up to refresh its appearance. By the end of the month it is hoped that work will have started to create the path into the churchyard extension followed by the final levelling and seeding of this area as wild meadow that will slowly be brought in to use as a burial site.

DOUBLE EDITION

Sunday 22nd June 2014
First Sunday after Trinity

True to his promise, Jesus the Prince of Peace is among us now – so let us welcome him and worship in a spirit of true celebration.

10.00 am Parish Eucharist
 Hymns: 534, 752, 695
Psalm: 69 vs. 13-22
Communion: 34, 222, 930

The prophet, overcome and overpowered by God, is compelled to cry out despite the derision he suffers. He has faith that his persecutors will stumble and be shamed.

Second Reading        Romans 6 v 1b-11
Death no longer has dominion over whoever has died to sin, for they are alive to God in Christ.
.
Gospel        Matthew 10 v 24-39
Having gathered his disciples, Jesus imparts his wisdom to them before sending them out to spread the good news. The underlying message is one of hope – not to be afraid but to have faith, despite the difficult times that lie ahead.

6.00 pm            Owlswick Choral Evensong
 Readings: 1 Samuel 24 v 1-17, Luke 14 v 12-24
Hymns: 457, 372, 374, 359
Psalm: 46

Prayer for the Week
The bread you give, O God, is Christ’s flesh for the life of the world; the cup of his blood is your covanent for our salvation. Grant that we who worship Christ in this holy mystery may reverence him in the needy of this world by lives poured out for the sake of that kingdom where he lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Sunday 29th June 2014
Peter and Paul, Apostles

Gracious God, you take what is impossible and make all things possible. Let us worship the Lord: all praise to his name!

In these words, Paul is reflecting on his life's work. It is a life of effort, faithfulness, hope, fulfilment and confidence in God.
.
Gospel        Matthew 16 v 13-19
For Simon to blurt out that Jesus was God's Son was unsurprising. But for Jesus then to rename this impetuous man “Rocky” was almost laughable. Yet with God, the impossible is made possible.

Hymns: 347, 579, 188

True and faithful God, you give courage to the fearful and endurance to the martyrs. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Stonework repairs to St. Dunstan’s
From June 23rd for approximately six weeks stone masons will be carrying out essential stonework repairs to the inside and outside of the church to ensure that the building continues to be well maintained. Work will take place from Monday to Friday and therefore there shouldn’t be any disruption to Sunday services although we will need to celebrate Communion in front of the chancel screen, possibly use the Clavinova and the church will be closed to visitors for part or all of this six week period. Morning Prayer and the Thursday Communion service will however need to be held at the Rectory until further notice. A further grant of £5000 has now been promised from the Wolfson Foundation towards the costs of the work. I apologise in advance if any inconvenience is caused. James

David Powell has offered to lead a public reading workshop in the Church on Saturday 5th July starting at 10.30 am.  This workshop is not restricted to just those on the current sidesperson rotas.  Indeed it might just be that it is the very thought of having to stand-up and read in public which has been deterring you from taking on this role!  Not to be confused with public speaking, public reading is really so much easier as someone else has already written your script!

Sunday 16th June 2014

There is nothing to compare with the everlasting God who strengthens the weak and weary and rescues those who trust in the Lord: creating, empowering, saving

Second Reading        2 Corinthians 13 v 11-end
Paul urges all Christ’s disciples to live as children of God through the grace of Jesus Christ and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.

Gospel        Matthew 28 v 16-20
The risen Christ promises to be with the remaining disciples as they make new disciples from all over the world, in the name of one God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

6.00 pm            Choral Evensong
Readings: Isaiah 6 v 1-8, John 16 v 5-15
Hymns: 684, 289, 379
Psalm: 93

Prayer for the Week
Merciful and gracious Father, you showed the fullness of your love when you gave your only Son for our salvation and sent down upon us the power of your Spirit. Complete within us the work of your love, that we who have communion in Christ may come to share fully the undying life he lives with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked in the coming weeks for:

  • Peace in the world, for countries where there is war and for places where there is hatred between races and religions, remembering especially the people of Iraq.
  • The interviewing/appointment process for a new priest at St. John’s Church, Lacey Green with interviews taking place on June 17th.

4th Deanery Synod Representative
We still have a vacancy for a 4th representative to serve on the Deanery Synod for three years. Deanery synods form a vital link between the local, diocesan and national church. There are three meetings to attend each year together with the PCC meetings held at this church. This position enables you to find out about the wider work of the church and the meetings of the General Synod. Lifts are usually shared to Deanery Synod Meetings. If you are interested please speak with James

Free Entry to Westminster Abbey
I have again secured a pass that allows up to four people free entry to Westminster Abbey (the normal adult price is £18). If you would like to borrow this pass please let me know. James.

If you wish to pay your collection by standing order then you do not need to be a taxpayer to do so. St. Dunstan’s benefits if money is given this way and forms (the one with a colour picture of St. Dunstan’s on it) can be completed from the table by the south door. James
