Sunday 27th January 2019

Fourth Sunday of Epiphany

In this season of Epiphany we look for the signs of God among us today. Let us continue to learn to recognise God’s presence, and in turn to allow ourselves to become signs of that presence to others, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

10.00am Parish Communion (Whiteleaf Scout Centre)

First Reading: Nehemiah 8 v 1-3, 5-6 & 8-10
As Ezra reveals the long-forgotten Law to the people, their dismay at their own failure is turned to joy when he explains that it is a good gift and that God will not only give the Law, but enable them to fulfil it

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12 v 12 -31a
This reading stresses that God gives us the gifts we need in order to fulfil what we are called to do.

Gospel: Luke 4 v 14-21
After Jesus reads from the prophet Isaiah in the synagogue the atmosphere is electric as he tells his listeners, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Hymns: 552, 658, 86, 163;   Communion: 297, 374, 420
Anthem: From the Rising of the Sun (F. A. Gore Ouseley)

3.00pm Evensong (St. Peter’s Chapel, Owlswick)
First Reading: 1 Samuel 3 v 1-20
Second Reading: Ephesians 4 v 1-16
Hymns: 484, 234, 239.   Psalm: 33v1-12.

Prayer of the Week
Lord God, whose compassion embraces all peoples, whose law is wisdom, freedom and joy for the poor, fulfil in our midst your promise of favour, that we may receive the gospel of salvation with faith and, anointed by the Spirit, freely proclaim it. Grant this though our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

Third Sunday of Epiphany

This Sunday continues the Epiphany theme of revelation. At Cana God is revealed in Christ as an extravagantly generous God, who has power to bring hope and life from the most unpromising situations.

10.00am Parish Communion (Whiteleaf Scout Centre)

First Reading: Isaiah 62 v 1-5.
The prophet tells the desolate and exiled people that God promises good things. Although their situation is desperate, the time is coming when they will rejoice.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12 v 1-11
Within the church community there are different sorts of gifts. No one person can embody them all, so we are called to discern the Spirit’s gifts in each other.

Gospel: John 2 v 1-11.
Jesus takes an unpromising situation and transforms it into a joyful party. His first miracle is one of abundance

Hymns: 565, 409, 304, 352;   Communion: 245, 279, 472
Anthem: I will thank thee (D. Purcell)

6.00pm Evensong (St. Dunstan’s Church Hall)
First Reading: 1 Samuel 3.1-20
Second Reading: Ephesians 4. 1-16
Hymns: 314, 347, 319.   Psalm: 96.

Prayer of the Week
God of wonders, at Cana in Galilee you revealed your glory in Jesus Christ and summoned all humanity to life in him. Show to your people gathered on this day your transforming power and give us a foretaste of the wine you keep for the age to come. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever Amen.

Prayer of the Week
As your sons and daughters, O loving God, we come before you in thanksgiving, called and united by your eternal Word. Teach us to ponder the mystery of Nazareth, the source of your strength and the unity of our families. Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • Those whom Christmas will have been difficult, experiencing loneliness, poverty or grief.
  • Those in Syria and Yemen whose lives have been blighted by hardship, loss and violence.
  • All those affected by the tsunami in Indonesia and the ongoing volcanic activity. For those who have lost loved ones, been injured or had their homes damaged, and for those working to bring aid
  • Those who are thinking about volunteering in the coming year and for those who will encourage them.

Redecoration of St. Dunstan’s Church
The church is beginning to look scruffy in a number of places and owing to some significant legacies and the continuing generosity of parishioners it will be possible to redecorate the whole church starting from Monday January 14th to Wednesday February 6th. The work is being undertaken by M. Simmonds Decorating Contractors and will take about 3 weeks. During this time services will continue as normal but in different locations. The 10 o’clock service will take place in the Whiteleaf Scout Centre in Courtmoor Close (please park in Mill Lane) and all other services in the church hall. As far as possible it will be ‘business as usual’. James

Dying Matters
Talking about death, dying and funerals raises big questions that it’s helpful to face at some point, but it can be hard to talk to family and friends. On Wednesday January 30th (10 am to 12 noon) or Thursday January 31st (7.30 – 9.30 pm) you are invited to come along to a session at 17 Wellington Avenue, Princes Risborough (home of Revs. Steve and Rose Williams) to think, chat and articulate these questions in a relaxed environment. A series of question cards are used to encourage conversations and to listen to others’ perspectives and experiences in small groups. The sessions are open for people of all faiths, doubts and none. To book a place on one of these sessions please contact Rev James Tomkins jamestomkins@btinternet.com 01844 275944 stating your preferred date.

Confirmation Classes
A Confirmation Service will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Aylesbury on the evening of Easter Eve, Saturday April 20th. If you (or your son/daughter) would like to consider being confirmed please contact James. Confirmation is traditionally seen as the entry point to receive Holy Communion as a person ‘confirms’ the promises made on their behalf at their Baptism. Preparation sessions will take place on Saturday April 6th and April 13th from 10am to 12 noon. James

Go onto the easyfundraising.org.uk website, search for ‘St Dunstan’s Church, Monks Risborough’, click the ‘support this cause’ button and create an account (you’ll need an email address) and then search for the retailer you are planning to order from. • MPs in the current Brexit debate, that cooperating in honesty, integrity and understanding, they might work towards bringing the greatest good to the greatest number of people
  • All who befriend drug addicts and run rehabilitation programmes and centres
  • Refugees who search for shelter and security, often risking their lives as they search for a new home and a new life
  • Upper Icknield Way (PR) West Lane (B)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
    • Joan Ballance, Pam Johnson, Pam Lidgley, Sue Caudery, Iris Hutchison and Veronica Parker
  • And also further afield for:
    • Alastair, Georgina Cole, Ginny Gibbs, Alex Chauhan, Cathy Owen, Gail, Suzy Cooper and Anna Ballard
  • The recently departed: Janet Drurie
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Pat Kimber, Rowland Hill, Audrey Stonell and Audrey Astley-Cooper
Please remember the charities that the parish supports:
The Whitechapel Mission is dedicated to providing a lifeline to the men and women caught in the cycles of poverty, hopelessness and dependencies of many kinds, and to see their lives transformed to hope, joy and lasting productivity.                        www.whitechapel.org.uk

With the Advent Fayre over £1,000 was taken with a profit of about £850 once expenses were taken into consideration. With the Christingle a whopping £704.15 was raised for the work of the Children’s Society. Thank you to everyone who made these such enjoyable community occasions. James

Help fundraise for St Dunstan’s
If you are planning to order Christmas gifts online, did you know that you can also raise money for St Dunstan’s? Go onto the easyfundraising.org.uk website, search for ‘St Dunstan’s Church, Monks Risborough’, click the ‘support this cause’ button and create an account (you’ll need an email address) and then search for the retailer you are planning to order from. The Easy fundraising website will then take you to the required online shop, and a percentage of your spend will be donated to the church. I have been doing this for the last year or so, and have raised nearly £20. If we all did it, just think how much we could raise...I am happy to help navigate you through the minefield that can sometimes be the internet. Speak to me, Sue Ingram for more details (275287) suemingram@hotmail.com

Redecoration of St. Dunstan’s Church
The church is beginning to look scruffy in a number of places and owing to some significant legacies and the continuing generosity of parishioners it will be possible to redecorate the whole church starting from Monday January 14th. The work is being undertaken by M. Simmonds Decorating Contractors and will take about 3 weeks. During this time services will continue as usual but in different locations. The 10 am service will take place in the Whiteleaf Scout Centre in Courtmoor Close (please park in Mill Lane) and all other services in the church hall. We aim to keep the disruption to a minimum and more details will be posted as they become available. One thing we do know is that help will be needed on Sunday January 13th to move some of the pews. James

Yew Bush
One of the yew bushes outside the South Door has been cut back to its stump in anticipation of a path being created between the church and the back of the church hall where we hope to site two additional toilets to cater for the large number of people attending special events and services.

Coffee and Mince Pies at the Rectory
As in the past everyone is invited for coffee and mince pies at The Rectory after the 10.00am Communion service on Sunday December 30th. Even if you don’t come to the service you are very welcome!

Confirmation Classes
A Confirmation Service will be held in the area in 2019. If you (or your son/daughter) would like to consider being confirmed please contact James before January 14th. Confirmation is traditionally seen as the entry point to receive Holy Communion as a person ‘confirms’ the promises made on their behalf at their Baptism. Preparation sessions will take place in the New Year.
