Welcome!

We hope you will appreciate worshipping here with us. Please see our welcome leaflet on the table for all of our services and activities.

Sunday 12th February 2017
Third Sunday before Lent

We have come together to worship the God who loves us wholeheartedly. May we learn to respond with our whole hearts and to share that love with those around us.

10.00am Parish Communion – Trinity Mass setting (followed by Fizz and Cake for Martin’s 60th)
Hymns: 314, 367, 695
Psalm: 119. 1-8
Communion: 625, 29, 116

First Reading      Deuteronomy 30:15-20
We can love God, following the commandments given for our benefit, and thus choose life, or allow our hearts to stray from God and thus lead us away from both love and life.

Second Reading       1 Corinthians 3:1-9
God calls us to work together and help others to grow in faith, but such growth is ultimately from God and should not be a source of quarrelling or jealous.

Gospel      Matthew 5:21-37
As elsewhere in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus teaches that, if we’re to grow as disciples, following the commandments begins in the heart and is not just a matter of outward appearance or action.

11.30am Owlswick Holy Communion
Readings: 1 Corinthians 3.1-9, Matthew 5.21-37

6.00pm Evensong
Readings: Amos 3.1-8, Ephesians 5.1-17
Hymns:684, psalm 13, 455, 319

Prayer of the week
All-seeing God, you alone judge rightly our inmost thoughts. Teach us to observe your law from the heart even as we keep it outwardly. Purify our desires, calm every anger and reconcile us to one another. Then will our worship at your altar render you perfect praise. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked for:

  • All those attending the forthcoming meeting of the General Synod of the Church of England in London
  • Effective strategies against people/drugs’ trafficking and for those who suffer as a result of this illegal activity
  • All those working within or being treated by the NHS
  • Community based evening classes, for the gift of learning new skills
  • The ministry of choirs, organists and musicians.

Pray as you can, not as you can’t
There was a terrific response to this course last week. As a result of this there are some copies of both the parish and team prayer diaries on the table by the main door that anyone can take away with them to assist them in their prayers. Following the discussions on the course I’d like to recommend a short book by Tom Wright called ‘For all the saints’ which gives an Anglican insight into what happens when we die and also about ‘praying for the departed’. Rob and I very much see this course as one of series of initiatives to ‘sustain your sacred centre’. If you have any questions about prayer either Rob or I are very happy to chat with you. James

Triple Edition
There will be a triple edition of the pew sheet 19th Feb, 26th Feb and 5th March so please can you keep your notices brief/submit them earlier than usual.

Electoral roll
The annual revision will take place from 30th January 2017.  If you wish to have your name added please complete an application form, available in the Church porch, and return to me not later than 13th March 2017. Women's World Day of Prayer March 3rd 11.00am
This is taking place at the Baptist church this year. We need 2-3 readers from St Dunstan's. If you would like to take part please let me know. Rosemary 344417.

More grass cutters required for the churchyard
St. Dunstan’s is very fortunate in having a team of people who help to keep the churchyard looking so neat and tidy. In anticipation that spring will be upon us in the next few weeks we require two or three more people to help cut a small part of the churchyard each. There is a variety of good quality mowers and strimmers to use with a time commitment of about two to three hours each fortnight during the growing season. If you would like to find out more about what’s involved please speak with James. There will be short meeting to run through the new equipment etc. and for new and existing members of the grass cutting team to meet each other on Saturday March 4th at 9:30am in the garden of the Rectory.

PCC and Deanery Synod vacancies
If you would like to become a member of the Parochial Church Council (PCC) that meets 8/9 times a year on a Monday evening, please have a chat with James. Stewardship Team – new members required

We need two or three more people to come forward to review our stewardship for the coming year by coming to two or three meetings during the year (but no more!).
