Sunday 24th March 2013

Palm Sunday

On this Palm Sunday, we welcome Jesus with loud hosannas and lay our hearts before him. May our worship today prepare us to receive the lessons of Holy Week.

10.00 am Parish Eucharist (starting in the lay-by) Merbecke Setting
Procession:  905
Hymns:  14, 931, 583, 258
Psalm: 31:10-20
Communion: 649, 610, 342

First Reading                Isaiah 50:4 – 9a
Isaiah’s suffering servant listened to God and, as the model disciple, he obediently taught others, whatever it took.  Innocent of any crime, he looked beyond his unjust punishment to vindication by God.

Second Reading            Philippians 2:5 - 11
Paul cited this early Christian hymn to teach us about humility: Jesus, suffering servant and obedient slave, humbly accepted his destiny to die as a human in order to bring all people to God.

The Passion Narrative    Luke 22:14 – 23: end
Some Lucan details stand out. Jesus asked God to forgive his persecutors, just as he had taught others to forgive.  Not only Pilate, but Herod and the centurion found him innocent.  Like the penitent thief, the distressed crowds began to recognise him and a spectacle became a life-changing learning experience.

3:00pm   Owlswick Choral Evensong
Readings: Isaiah 5:1-7; Luke 20: 9-19
Hymns: 439, Psalm 69:1-10, 95, 445, 379

Prayer for the Week
God of eternal glory, you anointed Jesus your servant to bear our sins, to encourage the weary, to raise up and restore the fallen.  Keep before our eyes the splendour of the paschal mystery of Christ, and, by our sharing in the passion and resurrection, seal our lives with the victorious sign of his obedience and exaltation.  We ask this through Christ, our liberator from sin, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Sprit, holy and mighty God, for ever and ever.  Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  •  The people and government of Cyprus during the current financial crisis

Quiet Day for Holy Week: Sat 23rd 9.45am - 4pm
This will be held at Lee Common Methodist Chapel to reflect upon the forthcoming events of Holy Week.  There will be short readings, music and reflections followed by time and space for your own thoughts and an opportunity to walk in the surrounding countryside. The day concludes with a simple service of Holy Communion.  Lee Common Methodist Chapel is only 10 miles away set in the midst of the beautiful Chiltern Hills.  The cost is £5 per person with a limited number of spaces available.  Please bring your own lunch. The address of the chapel is Oxford Street, Lee Common, Great Missenden, HP16 9JP. If you are interested in coming along please let James know.

Passion Narrative – Director Required!
Many people will be aware that on the Sunday before Easter (March 24th) in place of the sermon we usually have a reading of the passion Narrative. The script is already written so it just requires someone to take on the role of co-ordinating a group of adults to speak out the various parts that make up the story. If you are interested in co-ordinating this please let James know.  No previous acting experience required!

Cook required!
As part of the sunrise service at the top of Whiteleaf Cross on Easter Sunday we cook bacon sandwiches for those who come along. If you are a dab hand with a frying pan and can cook up this treat for about 40 people please let James know.

Easter Lilies in memory of a loved one
If you would like to take part please write legibly your name and the person(s) whom you wish to be remembered on the clipboard near the door. If you would like to make a donation please put the contribution into a blue gift aid envelope and write “Easter Lily” on the envelope, write your name & address on it if you are a taxpayer and put it in the wooden chest on the pillar or hand to Rev James Tomkins.

Electoral Roll
Every six years the church electoral roll is completely revised. Forms will need to be completed and returned by March 31st to the electoral roll officer Mr Roger Timms, Nags Head House, Aylesbury Road, Monks Risborough,  HP27 0JT. Forms are available in St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s.

Spring Concert, Saturday April 20th 7.00 pm
The musicians from the Trio D’Hiver are back by demand
playing a popular programme of classical music including pieces by Beethoven and Dvorak. Tickets are £8.00 (special deals apply) from Pat Kimber Tel 273942 or David Shuttle in Princes Risborough.

Easter Cross
To celebrate Easter Day we are making an Easter Cross out of flowers. At the 10 am service everyone is invited to bring flowers to stick in to and decorate the Cross that will have been made. A picture of such a Cross can be found on the notice board in the porch. Torie Collinge and Gwen Miles

Parish Safeguarding Role – volunteer required
This is an important role within the parish to ensure that we have the proper procedures in place to ensure the safety of children and vulnerable adults who take part in our church activities. Grass Cutting
If you have a few hours to spare every other week in the churchyard during the growing season please speak with James.

Confirmation
Confirmation is traditionally seen as an entry point to receive Holy Communion and/or point in which a person wishes to affirm their faith publicly. If you and/or your child are interested in being confirmed please speak with James

Sidespersons (welcomers)
We are very fortunate to have a group of people who help to welcome people to services. If you would like your name to be included as part of this group of people please let James, Sue or Rosemary know.

Third Sunday of Lent

In the midst of busy lives, yet in the midst of Lent, coming together to worship God is taking time to hear and respond to God’s work. Hear God’s call to repentance and invitation to receive new life as we come together in worship today.

8.00 am   Holy Communion (BCP)
10.00 am All-Age Family Eucharist and Baptism of Lottie Ward

Hymns: 54, ‘Nothings too big’; 212, 201
Communion: 971, 67, 856, 590

First Reading                Isaiah 55: 1-9
Isaiah calls us to hear and come to God’s life-giving promise and purpose.

Gospel Reading            Luke 13: 1-9
Just as the keeper had the fig tree’s life spared just a little longer to see true fruitful change, so too has a breathing-space been left for our own radical change of direction to embrace Christ whole-heartedly.

6:00pm   Choral Evensong
Readings: Genesis 28:10 – 19a, John 1: 35-end
Hymns: 315, Psalm 12, 718, 323

Prayer for the Week
Eternal God, give us insight to discern your will for us, to give up what harms us, and to seek the perfection we are promised in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • Those undergoing an organ transplant and those willing to act as donors
  • Those who work in the police force
  • Bucks University College and young people from this area at university.
  • Hospital Chaplains: for their difficult and demanding role, that they may be supported by others especially through prayer
  • Residents of: The Avenue, (PR) Oddley Lane (B)
  • Those in need who are known in our parish:
  • and also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Richard Irvine, Alastair, Marion
  • The recently departed: Enid Clack
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Leslie Morecraft, Chris Broadmeadow, Gladys Wallwork.

Please remember the charities that the parish supports, in particular this week:
ROPE – Relief for Oppressed People Everywhere

Easter Lilies

For Easter we are again offering the opportunity for parishioners to donate the cost of a lily as part of an arrangement in memory of a loved one.

The electoral roll seeks to reflect church membership as closely as possible and provides a general barometer of the vibrancy of the worshipping community. Forms will need to be completed and returned by March 31st to the electoral roll officer Mr Roger Timms, Nags Head House, Aylesbury Road, Monks Risborough,  HP27 0JT. Forms are available in St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s.

Parish Safeguarding Role – volunteer required
This is an important role within the parish to ensure that we have the proper procedures in place to ensure the safety of children and vulnerable adults who take part in our church activities.  The office is primarily administrative, requiring sensitivity and confidentiality. Please can you speak to either Susanne Dodds (342746) who is the current officer or James if you are interested in finding out more.

Grass Cutting
Summer may seem a long way off but we need to find additional people to help cut the grass in the churchyard. If you have a few hours to spare every other week during the growing season please speak with James.

Confirmation
Confirmation is traditionally seen as an entry point to receive Holy Communion and/or point in which a person wishes to affirm their faith publicly. There are various services locally at which this can take place and a number of people have expressed an interest. If you and/or your child are interested in being confirmed please speak with James

Sidespersons (welcomers)
We are very fortunate to have a group of people who help to welcome people to services. If you would like your name to be included as part of this group of people please let James, Sue or Rosemary know.

We need to appoint a new independent examiner of our church accounts at the Annual Meeting on April 22nd. It can be a member of the congregation provided they are not on the PCC or a relative of anyone on the PCC. If you are interested in finding out more or have any recommendations of suitably experienced people please could you let Pat Kimber (273942) or James know

Nothing’s too big, big, big for his power
Nothing’s too big, big, big for his power
Nothing's too little, little for His care
Nothing's too big, big, big for His power
Nothing's too iddly, widdly for His care

Nothing's too big, big, big for His power
Nothing's too incy, wincy for His care
Nothing's too big, big, big for His power
Nothing's too teeny, weeny for His care

He’s God of the big, God of the little
God of the stuff somewhere in the middle
The King of moving mountains
Loves you more than you will ever know
Oh, oh, oh

Nothing's too big, nothing's too small
Nothing's too much He cares for it all
