Sunday 2nd August 2015

Ninth Sunday after Trinity

Jesus is the bread of life. We meet to receive that bread, that life, praying that the Lord will feed us always, and prepare us for the life we live for God.

8.00am Holy Communion

Readings: 2 Samuel 11 v 26-Ch 12 v 13a, John 6 v 24-35

10.00am All Age Family Communion and Baptism of Jessica Haslam

Hymns: 450, 736, 54, 503
Communion: 47, 856, 411, 386

First Reading Exodus 16:2-4 & 9-15
We all need food for the journey, but the real point of this episode is persistence in pilgrimage. The people didn’t just want food – they wanted to give up. God feeds the people, but only as they “looked towards the wilderness”. His feeding has a purpose – to keep us faithful.

6.00pm Evensong

Readings: Ecclesiasticus 42 v 15-end, Hebrews 11 v 17-31
Hymns: 552, Psalm 88 v 1-9, 225, 232

Prayer for the week
Gracious Father, revive your Church in our day, and make her holy, strong and faithful, for your glory’s sake, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Your prayers are asked in the coming weeks for:

  • All those affected by the migrant crisis in Calais and elsewhere in the world

  • And also further afield for:

The restoration of the East Windows

This has been enormously successful with the windows being much more vivid in their colour and more importantly much more securely fixed so that there will be no danger of them falling out for at least another 100 years! Please do take a closer look at them so that you can really appreciate the difference. James

The Chandos Ensemble and Cream Teas
Thank you to everyone who helped to make this such an enjoyable afternoon. The music was delightful and the seamless serving of the cream teas a marvel to behold. One of the strengths of the church is its hospitality and this came across in many different ways. Around £900 was raised towards the cost of the restoring the East Windows (the total cost of this project is about £9,000). James

‘Open House’, Wednesday August 12th at 8pm at the Rectory
Under the umbrella of “The Jesus lifestyle” we shall continue to look at a DVD about the radical teaching found in the Sermon on the Mount and apply it to the 21st century. The DVD on ‘how to stop worrying and start living’ lasts approximately 35 minutes and leaves plenty of time for discussion at the end. Everyone is welcome. James

Fellowship Group
The next Thursday evening meeting will take place on 13th August.  Please bring along a favourite poem or piece of prose to share. 8pm in the Church Hall. The next walk is on Tuesday 25th August, meeting in the lay-by at 9.15am – everyone is welcome. “Knit-ins” will be in the Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month starting at 2.00pm. All are welcome to the Fellowship Group’s activities.

Churchyard Work Party, 9.30am Saturday August 15th

Once again we will be meeting to ensure that we keep the churchyard and the extension looking its best. Apart from the regular pruning, cutting and sawing tools, if you have a stiff brush (but not wire) and/or a shovel, some lichen and moss growth needs to be removed from the stonework surrounding the church. We will probably also undertake some general weeding/tidying up in the churchyard extension ready for its consecration. All welcome and refreshments will be provided. James

BBQ for 11 -15 year olds

A BBQ is taking place for young people at 34 Summerleys Road, Princes Risborough on Sunday August 16th from 6 -8pm. Susanne Dodds has kindly agreed to host this. If any tweenagers/teenagers would like to come please could their parents let Susanne susanne@sunfire-uk.com know along with any dietary requirements

The Friendship Group
We meet in the church hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 2.30 pm. The next meeting is Wednesday 19th August. All welcome!

Bucks County Show Hospitality Tent and Cakes
Once again many of the local churches are getting together to offer hospitality to those who come to this show held at Weedon Park (north of Aylesbury on the A413) on Thursday August 27th. The hospitality tent provides a space to rest (a while), with a free cup of coffee or tea and cake and also children’s craft activities.  Last year around 1,000 drinks were served and 100 cakes eaten! Mick and Anne White (346536) are co-ordinating the help from this parish. If you can donate a cake or help on the day please let them know. The cakes should not contain cream or buttercream as these are difficult to transport but these are the only exceptions!

Fun Day September 5th and Churchyard Consecration

Plans are beginning to take shape for this event which takes place from 2.00-4.30pm. There will be a whole variety of stalls and in due course a list for items required will be put up including cakes, home produce, good quality books, plants, bottles, tombola and raffle prizes, such as a fine wine, luxury box of chocolates or gift vouchers.

New Musical Setting for St. Dunstan’s
We have begun using the Trinity Setting composed by David Thorne for the Parish Eucharist. For those who have internet access the setting can be listened to on http://www.culvermusic.com/trinity-mass.html. There are copies of the music available for those who would like to have one. Everyone is also invited to come along to the first part of choir practice on Thursday September 10th at 6.30 to become more familiar with the setting. James

Prayer Diary and Welcome Cards available
Prayer is fundamental to the health and development of all churches. If you would like to take a laminated prayer card from the table and spend a few moments each day praying for different aspects of church/chapel life you would be most welcome. You’ll also find welcome cards in the pews as well as on the table and you are encouraged to pass this on to anyone moving in to the parish. James

Volunteers required to create a church trail for young people
Working together with an advisor I need a team of four adults to help put together a trail for young people (aged about 8-12) to follow with their parent(s) inside the church. If you are interested in finding out more please speak with James – no experience of the church’s history is required!

Our focus today is on the Christian life as a travel adventure, and thinking about the resources we need for our journey

10.00am Parish Eucharist

Hymns: 114, 163, 689
Psalm: 14 (chant 54)
Communion: 81, 245, 156

Second Reading Ephesians 3 v 14-end
The writer prays that God grants the Ephesians strength through the Holy Spirit, that Christ lives in their hearts through faith. He prays for them the power to comprehend the fullness of Christ’s love and be filled with God.

Gospel John 6 v 1-21
John describes the feeding of the 5,000. After this, Jesus withdraws to the mountain by himself. That evening, his disciples take a boat across the sea. When a storm blows up they see Jesus walking on the sea towards them. They are terrified but he tells them not to be afraid. Immediately the boat reaches land.

The crowds prevent Jesus from finding the time alone with his disciples, whilst his compassion ensures that, wherever he is, no one is ever turned away.

New Musical Setting for St. Dunstan’s
We have begun using the Trinity Mass Setting composed by David Thorne for the Parish Eucharist. For those who have internet access the setting can be listened to on http://www.culvermusic.com/trinity-mass.html. After you’ve had a chance to sing/listen to it several times I’d be very grateful for any comments. James

One or two more grass cutters required
St. Dunstan’s has a proud tradition of maintaining the churchyard to a high standard. There are currently 16 people who voluntarily help to cut/strim the grass around the church grounds. If you would like to become part of this team you would be very welcome. There are four different mowers to choose from and you can be allocated a section of the churchyard to look after. Please let me know if you are interested. James.

The future of Princes Risborough
Wycombe District Council (WDC) has been working on a master plan scenario for the expansion of the town and look forward to sharing it for your input and comment during July. On Friday 17th July an exhibition and drop-in session is being hosted at the Community Centre, Princes Risborough from 6.00 – 9.00pm. WDC has brought together a steering group of town stakeholders who will guide and direct the development of the plan for the town. This consists of elected members from the town, district and county councils, representatives from the residents’ associations, and others with particular interests such as business, sport and transport.
