Hymn for St. Dunstan (tune: Blaenwern)

Come, ye people, sing together
To the glory of our King,
Who has blessed us through the ages;
Gladly let our praises ring.
Praise Him for His servant Dunstan
Whom as Patron here we claim
Through a thousand years in England
He has borne the saintly name.

Found by God a faithful shepherd
Fit His flock on earth to lead,
Fearless in the face of danger,
Holy both in word and deed.
Wise in counsel, firm in purpose,
Strong through Sacrament and prayer,
In the Church’s Faith enabled
For her Lord to do and dare.

King of Saints, Who in such measure
To Saint Dunstan grace didst send,
See Thy children bow before Thee;
Keep us faithful to the end.
Grant that Dunstan’s prayers may aid us
As we tread the path he trod,
Through temptation, trial, suffering
Pressing onward up to God.

Seventh Sunday of Easter

The rift is healed and the distance covered. Between us and God there is no barrier and no need for hesitation. All stress and irritation, all fear, all doubt and hopelessness; all that can be set aside as we come in joy to the one who has made a way for us all to be part of his community of love.

10.00am           Parish Eucharist

Psalm: 97
Communion: 82, 484, 483

First Reading     Ezekiel 36.24-28
God’s word comes through Ezekiel to his people in exile, speaking of a time of hope to come. They shall be gathered from the corners of the earth and given a fresh start, reconciled with their God.

Second Reading     Acts 16 v 16-34
Paul and Timothy find that their message and acts of spiritual power get them into trouble in Macedonia, and they end up in jail. But God intervenes to free them, leading to the dramatic conversion of the jailer and his household.

Gospel John 17:20-26
Jesus breaks away for a moment from the needs of his disciples as they prepare for life and work without him. He prays for those who will believe through them, and his prayer is for unity, love and faithfulness.

Prayer for the Week
Father, righteous one, your beloved Son prayed that his disciples in every generation might be one as you and he are one. Look upon this assembly gathered in his name. Fulfil in us the prayer of Jesus and crown our celebration of this paschal season with your Spirit’s gift of unity and love. Grant this through Jesus Christ, the first-born from the dead, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • the three Cleveland women who were found alive this week, after 10 years of forced confinement
  •  the United Nations, especially Ban Ki-moon and all who lead the organisations’ agencies on behalf of the world
  • The archaeological dig and plans to extend the churchyard at St. Dunstan’s
  •  Secondary schools in Aylesbury, High Wycombe and Thame serving this area, their pupils, staff, heads and governors
  •  Northmill & Oak Road (PR) Flowers Bottom Lane & Lily Bottom Lane (Sp)
  • Those in need who are known in our parish:
  •   and also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Richard Irvine, Alastair, Marion Mullens
  •  The recently departed:
    • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Enid Menzies, Norah Cockcroft, Gladys Lemon

Please remember the charities that the parish supports, in particular this week:

‘Pilgrim Tour’ of Westminster Abbey
Following last year’s highly successful tour, I have again managed to make special arrangements for a prayer pilgrimage at Westminster Abbey on Wednesday June 5th. We will meet in the ‘lay-by’ in Monks Risborough at 3.30 pm to travel up to London by coach to arrive at the Abbey as it is closing to the general public. We will join a Canon Steward for a ‘pilgrim tour’ as we are taken around the Abbey hearing about its history and praying in its sacred places. The tour will begin at 6.15 pm, which this time will include the gardens, before ending with Compline at about 7.15 pm. We hope to return to Monks Risborough at about 9 pm. The cost will be £10 for adults, £5 for your first child under 18 (subsequent children free). You may want to bring a ‘snack’ with you. Places are now very limited. James

The 2013 Festival of Prayer
When: Saturday 6 July 2013, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
Where: Ripon College, Cuddesdon, nr Wheatley, Oxford OX44 9EX
Cost: £25 per person (discount available - book five places but only pay for four).
Now in its third year, this includes 'taster' sessions of some spiritual traditions and explores their deeper essence. The intention is to make different forms and styles of prayer accessible to beginners and the more experienced alike. Among the riches on offer are workshops on Ignatian, Celtic and Benedictine Spirituality; there are others on silence, healing, and praying with the whole body. They give opportunities to explore in depth how these traditions can feed the inner person. James

Parish Share Leaflet
‘Parish Share’ is the amount of money that each parish is asked to pay to support the mission and ministry of the Church of England in the Diocese of Oxford. The parish share paid by this parish for 2012 was £39,200. Most of this is used to train, pay and house parish clergy whilst much smaller percentages go to support the work of the national church, diocesan administration and various aspects of mission. A leaflet with the title ‘The New Share Scheme’ has been produced giving more information on the scheme. This can be found on the table towards the back of St. Dunstan’s for those wishing to understand more fully how the scheme works. James

More grass cutters/lawnmowers needed urgently
We need to recruit four more people to cut the grass in the churchyard so that we continue to maintain its fine appearance. People can become part of a team so that there isn’t a need to commit yourself on too regular a basis. If you have a few hours to spare each month during the growing season then please speak to James or Sue/Susanne as churchwardens. Unfortunately two of our three mowers have broken. To avoid expensive repairs or the need to purchase any new lawnmowers if anyone has a reliable and robust machine that they no longer use please can they again let James or Sue/Susanne know as churchwardens. Thank you.
