Sunday 24th February 2019

Second Sunday before Lent

Our heavenly Father works with us in our weakness, teaching us through the challenges of life and helping our faith to grow. So let us come together and rejoice, for even when we fall short God never abandons us.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Genesis 2.4b-9, 15-end
This passage tells us that God created people, animals and plant life and suggests that humanity has a special responsibility to care for God’s creation.

Second Reading: Revelation 4.
This reading stresses that God gives us the gifts we need in order to fulfil what we are called to do.

Gospel: Luke 8.22-25
After traveling around teaching vast crowds of people, Jesus wants to sail across the Sea of Galilee to a quieter area. When a storm breaks out he calms the sea and the disciples are amazed.

Hymns: 153, 493, 572 & 631, Communion: 554, 262, 924
Anthem: Ave Verum, R. Pearsall

3.00pm Evensong (St. Peter’s Chapel, Owlswick)
First Reading: Genesis 1.1-2.3
Second Reading: Matthew 6.25-34
Hymns: 359, 457, 357, 493; Psalm: 147.12-end.

You are invited to the 2019 Parish Lent Course: Daring to see God now
Using the excellent material provided by the ‘York Courses’, these sessions raise important questions about change, repentance and how we can become in ourselves living evidence of the good news. Full details can be found in your copy of the church newsletter (available from the table by the south door). The course includes a booklet which needs to be ordered, so please let the coordinator of the group know by February 28th if you would like to come. If you are coming to the Saturday session please bring a packed lunch with you (drinks will be provided). James, Rob, Rose and Jill

Lent resources
There are a number of free Lent resources near the south door. Along with the popular ‘Love life, live Lent’ booklets (2 separate versions for ‘kids’ and adults) and ‘Live Lent’ with Christian Aid, the Church of England have this year produced a 40 day booklet for  Pilgrim Journeys based on The Beatitudes. The booklet invites you to use the period of Lent to explore the unexpected and often challenging vision Jesus sets out in this crucial part of his teachings.  Each day provides you with a short reflection on a Bible reading, an invitation to pray and a suggestion of how you might respond to the Beatitudes' challenge to live as God intends, both as an individual and in community. James.

Monks Monkeys 10th Anniversary Party: help required
On March 23rd (2.30-4.30) everyone aged 0-12 (accompanied by an adult) is invited to a children’s party to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Monks Monkeys, the church’s toddler group. There will be a treasure hunt, a children’s entertainer and games. If you are happy to be an extra pair of hands on the day I would be delighted to hear from you. Anne White (346536) is making multiple ‘pass the parcels’. If you have any spare unused gift wrapping paper please let her know. James

Psalm or hymn: you decide
When we worshipped in the scout hall for practical reasons the psalm was omitted from the morning service. Now that we are back in the church the psalm has continued to be replaced by a hymn before the Gospel. The sense that I am getting is that this enhances rather than detracts from our worship. I suspect that part of the reason for this is that the psalm is difficult to sing and for newcomers and visitors to the church the psalm is likely to be a hurdle for them to overcome. With this in mind I’m keen to carry on favouring the hymn over the psalm for the time being whilst keeping the psalm for Evensong where it naturally fits and sometimes listening to the psalm as an alternative to the Old Testament reading in the Communion service. I would however welcome any thoughts you may have on this subject. James

Representative required
Churches Together is considering organising a free community event, possibly linked to the 2020 Town Festival, and working closely with the Town Council. If you are interested in going along to the initial meeting on Thursday March 21st at 7.30pm please let James know.

More grass cutters required for the churchyard
The time commitment is about two to three hours each fortnight during the growing season. If you would like to find out more about what’s involved please speak with James.

Lighthouse Quiz Sheet
Thank you to everyone at St. Dunstan’s who bought a Lighthouse Quiz Sheet. It raised £619 and the winner was Pam Harding from Haddenham who kindly donated the £25 cash prize back to Lighthouse. Thanks also to Janet East and Margaret Pitman who sold Quiz Sheets at St Dunstan’s. The answers are pinned up in the porch. Jamie Carter
