Sunday 28th July 2019

Sixth Sunday after Trinity

Our readings today focus on the theme of prayer, reminding us that we are called to bring ourselves, our concerns and the concerns of the world continuously to God.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Genesis 18 v 20-32
In the face of the wickedness of the actions of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham prays. In this prayer, we see Abraham’s compassion for the people; and we hear his holy argument with God, on their behalf.

Second Reading: Colossians 2 v 6-15
A reminder of who we are, children of God, and who God is – our merciful and faithful Saviour. Rooted in Christ, we can grow strong. In all this we are called to lives of abundant gratitude.

Gospel: Luke 11 v 1-13
The disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. He gives them the Lord’s Prayer, and tells them stories about persistence in bringing human need to God.

Hymns: 379, 690, 12, 178 (omitting verses 2 & 3).
Communion: 575, 610, 69
Anthem: If ye love me, T. Tallis

Silent Prayer Meeting: Monday July 29th at 8pm
We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. Each meeting in the church hall lasts about 45 minutes. The meeting starts with some simple relaxation exercises, a short passage from the Bible to reflect upon in the half hour of silence, followed by a time of sharing of our experiences if people wish. James

Sunday 21st July 2019

Fifth Sunday after Trinity

Today we will hear about Martha, who was “worried and distracted by many things”. Let us begin our worship by giving over to God the concerns that distract us and weigh on our minds, confident that our heavenly Father cares for us and will help us in our troubles.

Three mysterious strangers visit Abraham and tell him of a miracle that will happen: despite their advanced age, Abraham and his wife Sarah will have a child.

Second Reading: Colossians 1 v15-28
This passage describes Jesus’ divine nature and explains that his death on the cross has brought us forgiveness and a new relationship with God.

Gospel: Luke 10 v 38-end
Jesus breaks convention by entering the home of two women, Martha and Mary, to teach them. However, Martha is too distracted to listen.

Hymns: 409, 310, 573, 689.
Communion: 77, 467, 938

Pilgrim Course on Holy Communion

A six session course that covers why Holy Communion is celebrated as a memorial of Christ’s saving passion and stands at the very heart of worship continues on July 8th at 7.30pm at the Rectory as part of the ‘Open House’ group that meets about once a month. You do not need to attend every session. All welcome. James

Did you know?
At last year’s annual meeting a number of questions were asked about the Christian Faith/Anglican Church. These included why different colours were used for the altar cloths throughout the year, the Reformation, other faiths and what is a gradual hymn. I came across a very useful website http://www.stmarysrickmansworth.org.uk/4_we_believe/did_you_know.html that contained the answers/further information about these questions as well as a whole host of other information. Please do log onto this website to find out more and if you do not have access to the internet please do write down your question and pass it to me instead. James

More helpers required for the events team

At St. Dunstan’s we enjoy a wide variety of successful concerts and other events that are organised by members of the events team. We meet about six times a year and share out the responsibility for making events happen. It is a fun team to be a part of so please do think if you might be able to support St. Dunstan’s in this way by becoming a member of the team. Please chat with me (without any obligation to join) if you’re interested in helping out. James

Stewardship Initiative
Thank you to everyone who has so far responded to the congregational mailing. Your generosity and kindness is very much appreciated. James

Sustaining the Sacred Centre
Once again we hope you will support the various services during August under the umbrella of ‘Sustaining the Sacred Centre.’ Each day there will be a short service of approximately 20 minutes to complement the existing services already held.

The additional services will be at St Dunstan’s on Friday evenings (8.00 pm) and late Saturday afternoons (5.00 pm) and, as before, on Tuesday evenings (6.00 pm) there will be a ‘Service of Reflection’ at St Peter’s, Owlswick.

The services, especially at Owlswick will reflect on the life and writings of Mother Julian of Norwich, a 14th Century woman of prayer who had a remarkable life and who wrote about her experiences of God in a book, still available, known as “Revelations of Divine Love.” What she learned is still relevant for us today. James and Rob

Monday (8.45 am): Morning Prayer at St Dunstan’s (not 26/8)
Tuesday (6.00 pm): Service of Reflection at Owlswick
Wednesday (8.45 am): Morning Prayer at St. Dunstan’s
Thursday (8.45 am): Morning Prayer at St. Dunstan’s
Friday (8.00 pm): Compline (night prayer) at St. Dunstan’s
Saturday (5.00 pm) Evening Prayer at St. Dunstan’s

Bucks County Show, Thursday 29th August
Rev. Jenny Edmans is once again organising the Rest-a-While Marquee at the Bucks County Show on Thursday 29th August.  This is always very well supported by attendees of the Show and Jenny is now organising the cakes and rota for the marquee and is asking for 20 cakes from each Deanery and volunteers to serve and chat to people on the day.  These are slots of one hour from 10.00am to 4.00pm. She needs hosts (to chat to people and clear tables) – two people for each of the following slots: 10.00am – 11.00am; 11.00am – 12 noon; 12 noon – 1.00pm; 1.00pm – 2.00pm. In addition she needs people to help serve the teas, coffee and cake throughout the day.
Volunteers can claim £5 towards the entrance cost to the show ground. Jenny is going to contact people who have helped in the past but she would be delighted if new people came forward to help! Her e-mail address is   jennyedmans@aol.com
