The next meeting takes place from 7.30pm to 9.00pm at the Rectory on Wednesday August 22nd. Welcome!

We hope you will appreciate worshipping here with us. Please take away our welcome leaflet on the table for all of our services and activities. The 10 o’clock club for children is taking a break during the summer holidays but please do make use of the children’s corner in church with books, colouring sheets, toys etc. Coffee and squash is served in the hall after the 10.00am communion service.

Sunday 12th August

Eleventh Sunday after Trinity

We come because God has stirred in us a spiritual hunger that only God can satisfy. We come because Jesus invites us to feed on his presence and his word, to be sustained by him. So let us taste and see that the Lord is good.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: 1 Kings 19 v1-9
As Elijah flees Jezebel’s murderous threats, angels provide food and drink to sustain the weary and dejected prophet on his journey towards sanctuary at Mount Horeb.

Second Reading: Ephesians 4 v25 to ch5 v2
Paul urges his readers to model their lives on the forgiving love of Jesus, turning from divisive passions and practices to foster unity through generosity and grace.

Gospel: John 6 v35 & v41-51
Jesus shocks his listeners by declaring he is bread come from heaven, not just to meet physical needs, as manna did the Israelites, but to sustain those who eat in eternal life.

Hymns: 58 v1-4 & 8, 489, 19; Psalm 34.1-8
Communion: 297, 575, 946 (refrain only)

Prayer of the Week
God our Father and provider, whose Son has given his flesh for the life of the world, sustain your pilgrim Church on its journey with the word of life and the bread of heaven. Draw us nearer to him in whose name we gather, that, following his way of sacrificial love, we may come to the banquet of eternal life. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Sustaining the Sacred Centre: Daily prayer in August
During the month of August we provide extra opportunities for us all to meet together for short services and times of reflection lasting about 20 minutes. August is a quieter month than most to create more time to simply ‘be’ with God in the silence of his presence by which our spiritual life is sustained and developed. Bookmarks are available from the table as a reminder of these services and full details of the services can be found in the parish newsletter. Copies of our parish prayer diary (laminated in yellow) that enables you to pray daily for a different aspect of parish life are also available from the table.
Monday 8.45am Morning Prayer (except Bank Holiday)
Tuesday 6.00pm ‘Service of Reflection’ (at St. Peter’s)
Wednesday 8.45am Morning Prayer
Thursday 8.45am Morning Prayer
Thursday 9.30am Holy Communion
Friday 8.00pm Compline (night prayer)
Saturday 5.00pm Evening prayer
Come Lord, occupy my silent place and make your dwelling there. More grace is found in quietness than we may beaware

‘Open House’ – an opportunity to explore The Creeds

Over the next few months on a variety of evenings there will be an opportunity to take a fresh look at The Apostles and Nicene Creeds that form part of our worship on a Sundays. The next meeting takes place from 7.30pm to 9.00pm at the Rectory on Wednesday August 22nd. It’s not compulsory to attend every evening as the course has been designed so that people can ‘dip in and out’ as they please. Please do chat to me if you’re not sure as to whether this might be suitable for you or simply come along on the evening. James

Cleaner(s) required for St. Dunstan’s Church
With the impending ‘retirement’ of the existing two church cleaners there is a vacancy for people to share this role as part of a team on a voluntary/paid basis. The time commitment is about 1-2 hours per week and includes dusting, vacuuming, washing the floor, tidying, emptying bins etc. so that the church environment remains fresh and attractive to visitors. The duties of this role will normally be of a routine and planned nature but there will be a need to show some flexibility in working around services such as weddings, funerals and other social events. If you are interested in being involved please speak with James or Margaret Hunnibell

Music, hymns, silence and singing during Communion
There is a diverse range of opinion as to how people prefer to receive Communion. Some people prefer there to be total silence, some prefer listening to quiet music from the organ and/or choir and others prefer to join in with the singing of hymns. All are natural expressions of our faith and there isn’t one size that fits all. I therefore try and take a balanced approach so that each element can be found within this special time and that people are able to ‘commune’ with God in a way that is most meaningful to them. James
