Sunday 22nd April 2012

Third Sunday of Easter

We come together to fix our eyes on the risen Lord.  We come to worship the Christ, who is both magnificent and mundane, and to consider what his resurrection means for us.

10.00am   Parish Eucharist           (Lane Setting)
Hymns
Introit: 680, Psalm: 4, Offertory: 137
Communion: 673, 83
Anthem: ‘Alleluia’ by William Boyce
Recessional: 667

First Reading                Acts 3: 12-19
The early Church begins to find its feet.  Here Peter explains to astonished witnesses how the miracles they see are connected with the recent events of Jesus’ death and resurrection; they illustrate what faith in the resurrected Christ can do.

Second Reading           1 John 3: 1-7
John tells the wonderful news that every Christian has become a child of God, and as such, their actions must reflect the goodness of God.  There is no place for continued and wilful wrongdoing in their lives.

Gospel Reading             Luke: 24 36b - 48
The resurrected Christ appears to the terrified and unbelieving disciples.  He reassures them and they finally believe it is really him.  He commissions them for the next step in the task to take the good news into the world.

6.00pm             Owlswick Choral Evensong

Readings: Deuteronomy 7:7-13, Revelation 2:1-11
Hymns: 124, Psalm 142, 359, 282, 249

Prayer for the Week
God of all the prophets, you fulfilled your promise of old that your Christ would suffer and so rise to glory.  Open our minds to understand the Scriptures of the risen Christ, that we may be his witnesses to the farthest reaches of the earth.  We ask this through Jesus Christ, the first-born from the dead, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Sunday 29th April 2012

Fourth Sunday of Easter

On this fourth Sunday of Easter, we give thanks for God’s loving care of us and for the promise of resurrection.

The Revd David Wallace

Communion: 34, 938,  Recessional: 337

First Reading                Acts  4: 5 - 12
Filled with God’s Holy Spirit, Peter explains that he has healed the lame man in the name of Jesus Christ, who rose from the dead to bring salvation and healing.

Second Reading           1 John 3: 16 - end
The Spirit enables us to recognise Jesus as the Son of God, who showed God’s love by dying for us and who asks us to love one another in practical ways, in his name.

Gospel Reading             John 10: 11 - 18
Extending the biblical image of God as a good shepherd, Jesus reveals his identity and promises to lay down his life to save his Father’s sheep, trusting in the resurrection.

6.00pm             Choral Evensong
Readings: Exodus 16: 4-15, Revelation 2: 12-17
Hymns: 57, Psalm 81:1-8, 369, 470

Prayer for the Week

God of everlasting love, fulfil your plan of salvation to gather into one fold the peoples of the whole world.  Let everyone on earth recognise you Christ as the Good Shepherd, who freely lays down his life for all to take up again in power.  Grant this through Jesus Christ the resurrection and the life, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.  Amen.

Act now to keep zero VAT for historic churches

Parishioners are being encouraged to object to proposed VAT changes that could see the cost of alterations and extensions to churches increase by thousands of pounds. The budget proposed to abolish the zero VAT rating for listed buildings, including churches. That means that after October 2012 churches will have to find 20 per cent more money for their work. If it comes into force, the new VAT rating will mean churches will have to find on average an extra £30,000 to £40,000 for alterations and extensions. To sign the petition against this, please go to http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/32056

Receiving Holy Communion

A couple of years ago there was concern about sharing the common cup at Holy Communion because of the risk of infection from ‘swine flu’. Please can I reassure people that any risk associated with this virus and Holy Communion has now passed. It is perfectly safe for people to drink from the chalice rather than follow the practice of the priest ‘intincting’ or dipping the wafer in to the wine on behalf of the communicant. There are of course times, e.g. when you have a cold, when it is best to ask the priest to intinct the wafer on your behalf, but wherever possible please can I encourage (but not compel) you to “drink this...in remembrance of me”. I realise that this may be of concern to some people so please feel free to chat with me further about this. James
