Some additional information about Christmas Services at St. Dunstan’s

Christingle Service, December 5th at 10 am: A family friendly service for all ages without Holy Communion. The Christingle is an orange with a candle, red ribbon and sweets. The Christingle is also the symbol used by the Children’s Society in promoting its work to help young people who are disadvantaged or abused.

Carols and Readings, December 19th at 6 pm: A traditional service of readings and carols sung by the choir, congregation, and school followed by refreshments

Crib Service, December 24th at 3pm: The crib is slowly brought to life with the various figures that are connected with Jesus’ birth. It’s a chance for young children (and adults!) to get dressed up as their favourite character in the nativity story, to sing some carols and to listen to the Christmas story being retold

Carol service, December 24th at 6 pm: This service was held for the first time last year and combines the congregational singing of Christmas carols with readings, reflections and prayers.

Christmas Message

Dear Friends,

There is a story that God would have been much better sending three women rather than three men to visit the baby Jesus. For a start they would have felt quite comfortable asking for directions, they would have arrived on time rather than several months late, they would have been much more help in delivering the baby, they would have made sure that the stable was clean and cosy, and brought practical gifts to help Mary and Joseph look after their new born son.

However, when you look back upon the story of the wise men you realise the wisdom within it. They sensed instinctively that this was a turning point in human history as God came down to earth to live as a human being. That was wise. They were inquisitive and wanted to find out about this baby born to be king of the Jews. That was wise. Despite facing a journey of several months over thousands of miles and across difficult terrain they refused to give up. That was wise. They brought the right kind of gifts for such a special child: gold fit for a king; incense for use in divine worship; and myrrh, a spice that came to represent suffering and sorrow. That was wise. But all of these actions have only been proved wise because we are able to look back at those events two thousand years ago and see that the wise men were right to take such action. They were able to witness firsthand the most significant event in human history as God put his plan in to action for the saving of humankind.

It’s often said that “it’s easy to be wise after the event” but as humans we can only live life forwards, so we never know what is in store for us just around the corner. We might think we know what is coming next, but God and other people usually have other ideas. So we’re asked to be open in our approach to life: to have enough time and space so that we can cope with those unexpected happenings that by their nature can often be an unwelcome rather than a welcome interruption.

As we approach Christmas with all its joy and busyness, it’s important that we’re wise enough to leave some openings in our lives that we’re able to welcome Jesus as a friend and as our Saviour in to our festive celebrations. This may involve taking some time out to come a church service, to sit down quietly and listen to some carols or to pick up and read one of the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ birth. This might not seem wise at the time with Christmas presents still to buy and some last minute shopping to do, but if we fill our lives with busyness, partying and presents, then we’ll miss out on the real meaning of Christmas.

When we look back upon Christmas 2010, I wonder what we’ll be thinking. Will it be ‘I wish I’d eaten a bit more food’ or ‘if only I’d bought a few more presents’? Or will it be ‘did I experience the love and joy of the baby Jesus’ or ‘what was it actually like in Bethlehem 2000 years ago’? Hopefully it will be the latter so that “we can wise before the event”.

Wishing you a peace filled Christmas and joyful New Year,

James

Prayer for the week
God of majesty and power, amid the clamour of our violence your Word of truth resounds; upon a world made dark by sin the Sun of Justice casts his dawning rays.
Keep your household watchful and aware of the hour in which we live. Hasten the advent of that day when the sounds of war will be for ever stilled, the darkness of evil scattered, and all your children gathered into one.
We ask this through him whose coming is certain, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Your prayers are asked this week for:
 the people of Ireland as they face economic hardship
 the First Ministers of the Scottish and Welsh assemblies as they seek to create an effective role for these democratic assemblies.
 those who face persecution and violence for their faith, especially Christians in Iraq, Egypt and Pakistan
 peace in the world, and especially that there may be a lessening of the tensions between North and South Korea
 Buckinghamshire County Council, its officers and councillors.
 all those affected by the winter weather
 Those living in Southfields Road (Princes Risborough) and Hillside (Speen).
 Those in need who are known in our parish
 and also further afield
 For the recently departed
 Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time
Please remember the charities that St Dunstan's supports, in particular this week:

God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us your Son, the beloved one who was rejected, the Saviour who appeared defeated. Yet the mystery of his kingship illumines our lives.

Your prayers are asked this week for:
 those affected by the explosion of the mine in New Zealand and by the flooding in Cornwall
 Those elected to serve on the Church of England’s General Synod meeting this week
 the work of NATO and its peace keeping forces
 all who face hardship and the loss of their work or income as a result of economic cuts

Prayer for the week
O God, who alone can probe the depths of the heart, you hear the prayer of the humble and justify the repentant sinner.
As we stand before you, grant us the gift of humility, that we may see our own sins clearly and refrain from judging our neighbour.
We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Your prayers are asked this week for:
 Those who are suffering in the outbreak of disease in Haiti; and that those who are still homeless many months after the earthquake in that land may receive the aid they need to rebuild their lives.
 Those affected by the storms in the Philippines and south-east Asia this week: that those who have lost homes and crops are enabled to recover.
 Government departments that they may plan wisely for fair and sustainable distribution of our resources. For all those whose jobs, incomes or benefits are threatened by the economic cutbacks
 Ministry to young people. Church youth groups and their leaders. Lighthouse.

October letter from James

Letter from James

Dear friends,

Next year marks the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. This is a remarkable piece of literature whose dignified language has commanded enormous respect and has helped to shape our culture. Compton's Encyclopaedia writes that the King James Bible is one of the supreme achievements of the English Renaissance period “It is rightly regarded as the most influential book in the history of English civilisation...the King James Version combines homely, dignified phrases into a style of great richness and loveliness. It has been a model of writing for generations of English-speaking people."

Many of its phrases are much loved and well known such as “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want” (Psalm 23.1); “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven”(Ecclesiastes 3.1); “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1.1); and “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling symbol” (1 Corinthians 13 .1).

The BBC plans a series of programmes to mark this occasion, and up and down the country numerous events are being held to celebrate this milestone. In one church there is going to be a reading of the entire King James Bible which will apparently last three days and two nights! This may be slightly ambitious for a parish of our size but in all seriousness if anyone can think of a way to mark this anniversary I would be delighted to hear from them.

Nowadays there are numerous different versions of the Bible. Children will often use the Good News Bible because of its accessibility; in St. Dunstan’s Church the New Revised Standard Version is used since it combines modern scholarship with dignified language; whilst at the other end of the scale you have versions such as ‘The Street Bible’. Written for the twenty first century using modern dialects, ‘The Street Bible’ has an engaging style that you’ll either love or hate. “First off, nothing. No light, no time, no substance, no matter. Second off, God starts it all up and WHAP! Stuff everywhere!” (Genesis 1)

Whatever your preference the Bible remains the number one bestseller. It is a very rare occurrence for it not to be miles ahead of its nearest rival in the bestseller list and it is estimated that 44 million Bible are sold each year. The Bible Society’s attempt to calculate the number of Bibles printed between 1816 and 1975 produced the figure of 2,458,000,000 – almost 2 and a half billion, and another survey for the years up to 1992, put it closer to 6 billion (roughly the world’s current population).

However you look at it the Bible is an incredible piece of literature whether in the King James or some other version. The American President Abraham said of it “I believe that the Bible is the best gift that God has ever given to man.’

Your friend, James

Prayer for the week
God our Saviour, you call us into your service.
Make us wise and resourceful: children of the light who continue your work in this world with untiring concern for integrity and justice.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Your prayers are asked this week for:
 All those who have lost homes or livelihoods as a result of the flooding in Pakistan.
 The papal visit that amidst all of the controversy the love of the Gospel might shine through.
 Large international mining companies, that they may respect the natural world and the needs and rights of the poorer nations of the world.
 Fellowship and Friendship Groups, CAST, Mothers Unions and Covenanters.
 Those living in Woodbine Close (Longwick) and Deanfield Close (Saunderton).
 Those in need who are known in our parish
 and also further afield
 For the recently departed
 Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time
Please remember the charities that St Dunstan's supports, in particular this week:
Iain Rennie Hospice at Home, offering specialist and supportive care and advice for patients with cancer and other life threatening illnesses in their homes.
