As we join the wise men from the East at the cradle of Jesus, prepare to bring your own gifts to the infant king.  If you come with a rich abundance of joy, then so be it. Christmas Eve

11.30pm Midnight Eucharist       (Addington setting)

The journey of Christmas is the story of new life.  It is also the story of all creation, as the first words of Genesis are echoed in the Gospel of St John – “in the beginning” was the Word.

Hymns
Introit: 521

Gradual: 148

Offertory: 330

The proclamation of peace, good news and salvation is beautiful to behold and to hear.

Second Reading           Hebrews 1: 1-4

God spoke to our ancestors, through the prophets, but now he has spoken through his son, the heir of all things, and the exact imprint of God’s very being.

Gospel Reading            John 1: 1-14

The Word of God has existed since the beginning and before.  Jesus, the Word made flesh, the light of God, came into the world to enlighten humankind.  John was sent by God as the precursor of Jesus.  Though the light was not accepted, the darkness cannot extinguish it, and those who accept it become children of God.

God of majesty and power, amid the clamour of our violence your Word of truth resounds; upon a world made dark by sin the Sun of Justice casts his dawning rays.  Keep your household watchful and aware of the hour in which we live.  Hasten the advent of that day when sounds of war will be for ever stilled, the darkness of evil scattered, and all your children gathered into one.  We ask this through him whose coming is certain, whose day draws near, your Son our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

            All Saints Sunday

Today, All Saint’s Day, we remember those who have gone before us, known and unknown to us and we remind ourselves of their example.  May we be that good memory for others who come after us, too. Let’s worship together as those who have heard, seen and known, and open our hearts to be Christ’s blessing in the world in the Spirit’s power.

            Prayer for the week

All Holy God, you call your people to holiness.  As we keep the festival of your saints, give us their meekness and poverty of spirit, a thirst for righteousness and purity of heart. May we share with them the richness of your kingdom and be clothed in the glory you bestow. Grant this through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

            • peace throughout our world, particularly for peace in those countries which are making a transition from absolute power to democracy, from oppression to liberation
            • all who have died in the Turkish earthquake and for those who have been left behind in sorrow, facing the absence of loved ones and homes
            • those threatened by further flooding in Thailand
            • a successful and peaceful resolution to the protests affecting St. Paul’s Cathedral
            • That we will always know the value of our food and drink and may always give thanks for our daily bread
            • Local trades people: builders, plumbers, electricians.
            • Residents of Thorns Lane and Close (MR), Ilmer and the surrounding area
            • Those in need who are known in our parish:
            • and also further afield for:
              • Gordon Haynes; Christine; Deborah Ryley; Joan Male; Richard Irvine; Emma, Matt and Olivia; Sarah and Matt; Sally Maddox, Dewis Smith
            • For the recently departed:
              •
            • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time particularly:
              •  Annie Harris, Albert Lee, Trevor Telfer

Please remember the charities that St Dunstan's supports, in particular this week:

The Church Housing Trust – dedicated to the rehabilitation and resettlement of homeless people of all ages and backgrounds.

            Youth leader wanted:

The post is 4 hours per week and will require the organisation of, and attendance at, one 2 hour Youth Club session per week: closing date 1 November. Interested? Oxford Diocesan Pilgrimage Map

A copy of this can be found in the porch along with individual pocket size leaflets for people to take from the table towards the back of the church.
