First Reading                Isaiah 64:1-9

The prophet Isaiah looks at the disastrous state of God’s people and calls upon the Lord, their Father, to come down and make his presence felt.
Second Reading           1 Corinthians 1:3-9

The Apostle Paul thanks God for the spiritual life of the Christians of Corinth and assures them that God will continue to strengthen them to the end.
Gospel Reading            Mark 13:24 – 37

In words of a visionary, apocalyptic nature Jesus calls his disciples to keep awake and alert to the end.

Prayer for the week

God of majesty and power, amid the clamour of our violence your Word of truth resounds; upon a world made dark by sin the Sun of Justice casts his dawning rays.  Keep your household watchful and aware of the hour in which we live.  Hasten the advent of that day when sounds of war will be for ever stilled, the darkness of evil scattered, and all your children gathered into one.  We ask this through him whose coming is certain, whose day draws near, your Son our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

 

Your prayers are asked this week for:

• All those living with HIV, dying from AIDS and those who have been left orphaned (World’s AIDS day December 1st)
• Peace in places like Syria and Egypt where there are protests and unrest
• The Prime Minister; for the heavy burden of office and the opportunities to improve the life of our nation.
• Local and Regional Health Authorities, Community Health Councils, Hospital Managers.
• Residents of Shortborough Avenue (PR), Turnip End (Sp)
• Those in need who are known in our parish:

We have had some new 'recruits' whom we would like to welcome, and this is an opportunity for us to look at the sidespersons' duties and for anyone to raise any queries

Rev, the church school is up for religious inspection and Adam frets that its inspiring new teacher, Mr Field, is an atheist. Worse, he has to raise a team for an interfaith football tournament 9.00pm BBC2

Churches Together Community Carol singing, December 2nd at 5.30 pm

A combined choir from the towns' churches will be singing to open the switching-on of the Christmas lights on the evening of 2nd December. There will be a rehearsal in the new Chiltern Christian Fellowship building (the old British Legion building) on 29th November at 7.30pm, but it is not essential to attend this to sing on the Friday.

Applying for a Grant from Hody’s Charity

This was founded by a rector of St Dunstan’s Church, Monks Risborough in 1706, and added to by his successor Dr Quarles.  It provides grants for students in further or higher education or for apprentices who live in the parish or who are on the electoral roll. Applicant must be <21 at the time of their first application and <25 years old on receipt of the last grant.  You can apply three times. This is the time of year for applications.  Please call Rosemary if you would like to apply. 344417
