Sunday 1st March

First Sunday of Lent

As we move into Lent we hear the story of Jesus’ temptation and how he refused to put God to the test. So in our worship we’ll be thinking about how we put God and one another to the test, and asking for God’s guidance in letting go of deep ingrained patterns of behaviour.

8.00am Holy Communion
Readings: Genesis 2.15-17; 3.1-7, Matthew 4.1-11.

10.00am All Age Family Communion and Baptism

Gospel: Matthew 4.1-11
Three times Jesus resists the devil’s temptations to ignore God’s will, choosing not to act in self-interest, nor to behave recklessly to prove his divinity, nor to seize power for himself.

Hymns: 509, 212, 161, 419.
Communion: 47, 674, 285, 166.

6.00pm Evensong
First Reading: Deuteronomy 6.4-9,16-25
Second Reading: Luke 15.1-10
Hymns; 643, 457, 673 : Psalm 50v1-15 .

Prayer of the week:
Lord our God, in every age you call a people to hear your word and to do your will, renew us in these Lenten days: washed clean of sin, sealed with the Spirit, and sustained by your living bread, may we remain true to our calling and, with the elect, serve you alone. Grant this through Christ, our liberator from sin , who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, holy and mighty God forever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • Countries such as Zimbabwe and Australia which have been experiencing droughts and those in this country affected by flooding
  • People of Cameroon, Syria and Turkey. For those fleeing war and violence.
  • Possibilities of ministry and mission within the Risborough Team.
  • Stratton Road & Sycamore House (PR) Skittle Green & Holly Green (B)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:

  • Those recently deceased: Robert Stonell
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:

Can I please encourage you to join me in saying this prayer each day for all of us at St Dunstan’s during the Vacancy?     Thank you.  Rob

Heavenly Father,
We thank you for the life of St Dunstan’s over many centuries: for its worship, its ministry and its mission within and to the local community.
We thank you for the privilege of being members of the Church today.

Sunday 23rd February

Sunday Next Before Lent

Today we join Peter, James and John, high up on a mountain with Jesus. We watch as dazzling white light transforms Jesus, and Moses and Elijah speak with him. In awe and wonder let us worship God, who calls Jesus “my Son, the Beloved”, and listen for God’s voice speaking to us today.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Exodus 24.12-end
High on a mountain, Moses receives from God the promised commandments. Clouds cover the glory of God, as when Jesus too meets God on a mountain top.

Second Reading: 2 Peter 1.16-end
Peter writes about hearing God’s voice on the mountain top and speaks of the honour and glory given to Jesus by God, who calls him “my Son, the Beloved”.

Gospel: Matthew 17.1-9
After all they see and hear up on the mountain Peter, James and John are terrified. Jesus calms them with a touch and they return to familiar ground forever changed.

Hymns: 105, 314, 636; Psalm 2
Communion: 67, 77, 947.

3.00pm Owlswick Evensong
First Reading: 2 Kings 2.1-12
Second Reading: Matthew 17.9-23
Hymns; 475, 389, 359, 245 : Psalm 84 .

Prayer of the week:
Heavenly Father, in Christ Jesus, you challenge us to renounce violence and to forsake revenge. Teach us to recognise as your children even our enemies and persecutors, and to love them without measure or discrimination.  We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • Those affected by heavy rain and strongs wind in the UK which have disrupted transport and damaged infrastructure.
  • The good care of all patients under the NHS.
  • Music teachers and all those who travel long distances to bring the gift of making music to young and old.

Sunday 16th February

Sunday Before Lent

As God’s beloved children, let us join with all the beauty of creation in coming before God in praise and worship. We approach just as we are, with all our dreams and hopes, all our worries and struggles, all our gladness and sadness.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Genesis 1.1-2.3
God speaks the world into creation. On the sixth day, human beings are created in God’s image. God is united with us from the very beginning. We are given responsibility for looking after others.

Second Reading: Romans 8.18-25
Creation is fallen. Suffering is built into the fabric of life. Like a woman in labour, all of us must endure pain before the future promise of glory as God’s children.

Gospel: Matthew 6.25-end
As part of Jesus’ long discourse known as the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us not to worry. We concern ourselves with how our needs will be met. But our heavenly Father is ahead of us. The key for us is to place God and God’s kingdom first.

Hymns: 476, 736, 186, 32.
Communion: 455, 590, 937.

6.00pm Evensong
First Reading: Proverbs 8.1, 22-31
Second Reading: Revelation 4
Hymns; 120, 25, 428: Psalm 148.

Prayer of the week:
All seeing God, you alone judge rightly by our innermost thoughts. Teach us to observe your law from the heart even as we keep it outwardly. Purify our desires, calm every anger and reconcile us to one another. Then will our worship at your alter render your perfect praise. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • East Africa where heavy rains in October and November have allowed desert locusts to swarm and devastate crops, pastures and farmer’s livelihoods this month.
  • People of Puerto Rico who are devastated by destructive hurricanes, earthquakes and aftershocks.
  • University undergraduates, for the development of both academic and social horizons.
  • Chiltern Railways, Arriva Buses, Taxi Drivers and others working in public transport.
  • Park Meadow (PR) Studridge Lane (Sp)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
    • Pam Johnson, Michael Hopkins, Elsie Ratlidge, Pam Baldwin and family
  • And also further afield for:
    • Alastair, Georgina Cole, Ginny Gibbs, Cathy Owen, Gail, Suzy Cooper, Jonathan Kelly, Joshua, Bill, Sue, Marriette
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Jean Kingham, Susan Watson, Arthur Howes, Betty Newport, Alf Godfrey, Den Botten, Len Walsham, Bert Keeping.

Sunday 9th February

Third Sunday Before Lent

Let us consider our true identities in God’s kingdom. Called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, our role is to point others towards God.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Isaiah 58 v 1-12
Although Israel fasts, it is not the fast that God chooses. Instead, God calls on them to loose the bonds of injustice and then light shall break forth and the ancient ruins will be rebuilt.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2 v 1-16
Paul tells the Corinthians that he did not come to them with lofty words or wisdom, and that God’s wisdom is not of this age. God has revealed wisdom through the Spirit and those not taught by the Spirit do not receive spiritual gifts.

Gospel: Matthew 5 v 13-20
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells his followers they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Furthermore, he tells them he has not come to abolish the law and the prophets, but to fulfill them. Only those whose righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees will enter the kingdom of heaven.

Hymns: 171, 367, 88, 684.
