Sunday 29th November 2015
First Sunday of Advent

Hear the cry of acclamation: he is coming on the clouds!

10.00am Parish Communion (Addington Mass Setting)

Hymns: 128, 642, 405
Psalm: 25v1-9
Communion: 472, 362, 263

First Reading Jeremiah 33:14-16
These words come at the end of Israel’s kingdom. Even though under David and Solomon it had moments of true glory, it was also marked by greed, brutality and bloodshed throughout. God doesn’t promise a restored kingdom, but a righteous branch – one who will be very different from all that has gone before.

Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 3:9-end
The coming of Jesus could happen at any time – and for some has already happened. This beautiful blessing is a prayer for faithfulness and readiness as we live constantly in Jesus’ presence.

Gospel Luke 21:25-36
These words of Jesus stand alongside Old Testament prophecies of Jerusalem’s destruction which took place in Jeremiah’s time, and again in AD 70. Both could be seen as manifestations of the “day of the Lord”. This doesn’t necessarily mean that God engineered events, but through these overturning calamities God’s righteous presence is revealed.

6.00pm   Churches Together in Risborough Advent Service at St John's Church, Lacey Green

Prayer of the week
Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • The people of France and Belgium, as they continue to pick up the pieces of their lives after recent terrorist attacks and threats
  • All victims of terrorism, throughout the world, that governments and those in authority or influence may work together to bring a lasting peace.

  • Archdeacon Karen Gorham as she takes up new post next year as Bishop of Sherborne

Sunday 22nd November 2015
Christ The King
The Sunday Next Before Advent

Hallelujah! Christ is king! Hallelujah! Dominion is reshaped.

10.00am Parish Communion
followed by commemorative tree planting

Hymns: 552, 104, 695
Psalm: 93
Communion: 381, 82, 931

First Reading Daniel 7:9-10 & 13-14
The book of Daniel, set in Babylonian exile, speaks particular encouragement when we are ill at ease with our contexts. The vision unfolds to show a human being receiving dominion from God. This person could be the Messiah representing the final triumph of God’s people – and, looking wider, the final salvation of all humanity.

Second Reading Revelation 1:4b-8
In this magnificent apocalypse, John picks up Daniel’s vision and shows it fulfilled in Jesus Christ. His resurrection and ascension affects his presentation before the heavenly throne “with the clouds”. This is the triumphant acclamation of Jesus and his full vindication.

Gospel John 18:33-37
Jesus’ kingdom is “not from this world”. Its origins are elsewhere. He is made king, not through human coronation or popular vote, but through divine action following the cross. Nonetheless, his kingdom does exist in this world. Through the Spirit the reign of God becomes manifest in our lives.

3.00pm   Owlswick Evensong
Readings: Daniel ch 5, John 6 v 1- 15
Hymns: 443, Psalm 72 v1-7, 271, 282, 352

Prayer of the week
Almighty and eternal God, to Jesus Christ, the first-born from the dead, you have granted everlasting dominion and a kingship that shall not pass away. Remove from us every desire for privilege and power, that we may imitate the sacrificial love of Christ our King and, as a royal and priestly people, serve you humbly in our brothers and sisters. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • The people of Paris, as they pick up the pieces of their lives after the recent attacks on their families and friends
  • All victims of terrorism, throughout the world; may governments and those with authority or influence work together to bring a lasting peace.
  • All refugees who flee to escape intolerable situations in their homelands: may they travel safely, be treated with compassion and fairness, and be given the help they need to live new lives.
  • The government departments responsible for the rights of workers, pensioners and the disabled.
  • The mission, ministry and congregational life of St Michael’s Church, Horsenden.
  • Wycombe Road (B & LG) Hillview (Sa).
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Alastair, Uncle Frank, Anne Clark, Katy, Georgina Cole, Robert, baby Molly
  • The recently departed:
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • John Jolley, Alice Broadmeadow, Vera Girling, Sheila Benham, Margaret Martin, Dorothy Pine, Lily Barraclough

The First Sunday of Advent – November 29th
Advent will begin next Sunday and as part of the 10 am service a new ciborium that has been generously donated will be on view and used for the first time. The current ciborium is a bit too small as the original one we use to use has never been replaced following the theft of silver ware from the safe a couple of years ago. Proposed parking restrictions in Mill Lane
Thank you to everyone who expressed their views. The proposals to include a single yellow line no waiting restriction between 10am and 11am & 2pm and 3pm have now been dropped and the double yellow lines at junctions kept. This should enable local residents easier access on to Mill Lane at busy times without having a negative impact on everyday church and community activities. The revised proposals can be found at http://www.transportforbucks.net/Roadworks-Centre/Schemes-and-projects/Our-schemes-and-projects/Princes-Risborough-amendments-to-parking.aspx and a copy is also on the noticeboard in the church porch. Thank you again for your support. James

Upgrading of Heating and Installation of New Boiler
The new boiler and new radiators have been successfully installed. We hope you notice the difference which should result in more instant and evenly spread heat throughout the church building. There will be a few weeks during which we will need to fine tune the system and the boiler settings, think about redecorating various parts of the church and the existing radiators, as well as slightly altering the position of some of the pews and redesigning the boxing in of the pipes in the children’s corner. If you have any comments please let James, Charlie or Susanne know, especially if you are too cold or too hot!

Team of suitably experienced/qualified First Aiders
We’re looking to establish a list of people who are suitably experienced or qualified in first aid so that in the event of an accident or emergency during a church service we are able to respond quickly and effectively. If you would like to be considered for this list please speak to James, Charlie or Susanne.
