Sunday 22nd November 2015
Christ The King
The Sunday Next Before Advent

Hallelujah! Christ is king! Hallelujah! Dominion is reshaped.

10.00am Parish Communion
followed by commemorative tree planting

Hymns: 552, 104, 695
Psalm: 93
Communion: 381, 82, 931

First Reading Daniel 7:9-10 & 13-14
The book of Daniel, set in Babylonian exile, speaks particular encouragement when we are ill at ease with our contexts. The vision unfolds to show a human being receiving dominion from God. This person could be the Messiah representing the final triumph of God’s people – and, looking wider, the final salvation of all humanity.

Second Reading Revelation 1:4b-8
In this magnificent apocalypse, John picks up Daniel’s vision and shows it fulfilled in Jesus Christ. His resurrection and ascension affects his presentation before the heavenly throne “with the clouds”. This is the triumphant acclamation of Jesus and his full vindication.

Gospel John 18:33-37
Jesus’ kingdom is “not from this world”. Its origins are elsewhere. He is made king, not through human coronation or popular vote, but through divine action following the cross. Nonetheless, his kingdom does exist in this world. Through the Spirit the reign of God becomes manifest in our lives.

3.00pm   Owlswick Evensong
Readings: Daniel ch 5, John 6 v 1- 15
Hymns: 443, Psalm 72 v1-7, 271, 282, 352

Prayer of the week
Almighty and eternal God, to Jesus Christ, the first-born from the dead, you have granted everlasting dominion and a kingship that shall not pass away. Remove from us every desire for privilege and power, that we may imitate the sacrificial love of Christ our King and, as a royal and priestly people, serve you humbly in our brothers and sisters. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • The people of Paris, as they pick up the pieces of their lives after the recent attacks on their families and friends
  • All victims of terrorism, throughout the world; may governments and those with authority or influence work together to bring a lasting peace.
  • All refugees who flee to escape intolerable situations in their homelands: may they travel safely, be treated with compassion and fairness, and be given the help they need to live new lives.
  • The government departments responsible for the rights of workers, pensioners and the disabled.
  • The mission, ministry and congregational life of St Michael’s Church, Horsenden.
  • Wycombe Road (B & LG) Hillview (Sa).
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Alastair, Uncle Frank, Anne Clark, Katy, Georgina Cole, Robert, baby Molly
  • The recently departed:
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • John Jolley, Alice Broadmeadow, Vera Girling, Sheila Benham, Margaret Martin, Dorothy Pine, Lily Barraclough

Please remember the charities that the parish supports:

TODAY - Commemorative Tree Planting, November 22nd

After the 10 am Parish Communion service three trees (a Walnut, Silver Birch and Hornbeam) will be planted in the churchyard extension to mark its consecration and the creation of a wild meadow. Everyone is welcome to attend this.

Silent Prayer Meeting – Monday November 23rd at 8pm

We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. All are welcome to the church hall for these meetings of any faith or none. For further information please contact James

Fellowship Group
The next walk is on Tuesday November 24th meeting in the lay-by off the A4010 at 9.15am. There will be no walk in December but we will meet again on Tuesday 26th January. “Knit-ins” are held in the Church Hall on the 4th Thursday (November 26th) of each month starting at 2.00pm. Our Christmas Party will be on Thursday 10th December. All are welcome to this group’s activities.

Advent Fair Saturday November 28th 10am – 12 noon
Thank you to everyone who has supplied bulbs bowls and baskets as well as items for the Christmas hamper. The church will be packed with a wide variety of stalls and refreshments will be served.

The First Sunday of Advent – November 29th
Advent will begin next Sunday and as part of the 10 am service a new ciborium that has been generously donated will be on view and used for the first time. The current ciborium is a bit too small as the original one we use to use has never been replaced following the theft of silver ware from the safe a couple of years ago. In connection with the start of Advent there are also free copies of ‘Love Life, Live Advent’ on the table by the south door. This suggests a simple action for each day of Advent that will help us pause, reflect, prepare and make room in our lives to receive God’s greatest gift of Jesus that we celebrate at Christmas. James

‘Open House’, Thursday December 3rd at 8pm at the Rectory
Under the umbrella of “The Jesus lifestyle” we shall continue to look at a DVD about the radical teaching found in the Sermon on the Mount and apply it to the 21st century. The DVD lasts approximately 35 minutes and leaves plenty of time for discussion at the end. Everyone is welcome. James

Churchyard leaf sweep and maintenance
At 9.30 am on Saturday December 5th we are looking to clear the last of the fallen leaves from the churchyard and to carry out some general tasks such as pruning trees and maintaining paths. We can provide some tools but if you can bring any yourself that would be extremely helpful. James

Christingle Factory December 5th 9.30am Church Hall
We are looking for some lovely volunteers to work on the production line helping to make Christingles. No experience required, just enthusiasm. Payment is in the form of tea/coffee, mince pies and biscuits. More info from Rosemary 344417
