Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity

Each of us is called here today to worship, to hear and see, to know and to be changed for ever by the mind of Christ in us. Let us be those who recognise and welcome God’s transforming, saving action for ourselves, for those around us and for the world we know, as we celebrate the presence of God in our lives.

If an individual is treated according to what she or he does, then how can people accuse God of unfairness?

Second Reading Philippians 2 v 1-13
Paul appeals to the Philippians to let the mind of Jesus be in them.

Gospel Matthew 21 v 23-32

6.00 pm            Owlswick Harvest Festival Evensong

Readings: Deuteronomy 28 v 1-14, Luke 12 v 22-31
Hymns: 259, Psalm 65, 265, 261, 262

O God, you alone judge rightly and search the depths of the heart.  Make us swift to do your will and slow to judge our neighbour that we may walk with those who follow the way of repentance and faith and enter your heavenly kingdom.  Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

St. Matthew’s Day

Wisdom brings much more happiness than material wealth, for those who find wisdom find life itself.

Second Reading 2 Corinthians 4:1-6
Those, like Matthew, who are engaged in the Spirit’s work, have renounced the shameful things we tend to keep hidden, and allowed the light of Christ into their darkness.

Gospel Matthew 9:9-13
Despite the mutterings and criticism of the Pharisees, Jesus calls Matthew the tax collector to be not only a disciple, but also a friend.

6.00 pm            Evensong
Readings: Ecclesiastes 5:4-12; Matthew 19:16-end
Hymns: 643, Psalm 119:33-40, 457, 156

Prayer for the Week

O Almighty God, whose blessed Son called Matthew the tax collector to be an apostle and evangelist: give us grace to forsake the selfish pursuit of gain and the possessive love of riches that we may follow in the way of your Son Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Distribution of stewardship leaflet, TODAY
This leaflet has been put together to enable us all to review how we contribute to the life of St. Peter’s and St. Dunstan’s. We have tried to address this leaflet personally to everyone in the congregation but inevitably I’m sure that someone will have been missed off the list so please accept my apologies in advance! James

Further works at St. Dunstan’s
The path to the churchyard extension has been seeded with grass so we’ll need to avoid walking on this to enable the grass to establish itself. This will be followed by the creation of a wild meadow. We have also learnt that the condition of the stained glass windows above the high altar at the East End of the church has unfortunately deteriorated. These windows were meant to last for about 100 to 150 years and were erected in the early 1860s as part of the Victorian restoration. The glass will need to be taken out and the lead seals replaced. This also seems a sensible time to clean and restore the tracery panel glass at the top of the windows either side of where the choir sits which have become blackened over time. This is probably the oldest medieval glass there is in the church. All of this work is likely to cost in the region of £9,000 - £16,000. The work is essential for the East End windows which are already buckling, bulging, leaking and cracking. The work is likely to be carried out in 2015 once the necessary permissions and funding have been arranged. James

Next seasonal service booklet
Having introduced new booklets for Easter and Ordinary Time, the next new booklet will cover Advent. The recommendation to the PCC which meets on Monday September 15th is to continue the use of contemporary language for the liturgy and the Addington mass setting for the music. If you have any comments please can you let a PCC member, Rob or I know. James

We meet in the church hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 2.30 pm. The next meeting is on 17th September.

Hymns: 552, 310, 587, Psalm 108

Prayer for the Week
God of the ages, you call the church to keep watch in the world and to discern the signs of the times. Grant us the wisdom which your spirit bestows, that with courage we may proclaim your prophetic word and complete the work that you have set before us. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked in the coming weeks for:

  • The millions of people who are threatened by violence and bloodshed, especially in Ukraine, Syria and Iraq, that there might be an end to hostilities and terror.
  • For all who farm livestock and the added pressures they face from animal diseases
  • The Bishop of Buckingham, The Archdeacon of Buckingham, and the Parish Development Adviser
  • Those who live in Town Farm Barns (PR) Shootacre Lane (B)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Alastair, Matt Elworthy, Uncle Frank, Katy, Albert and Georgina Cole, Susan Parkin, Lin Nicholls
  • The recently departed: Harry Purver
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Sue Avery, Peter Felton, Kath Ward
Please remember the charities that the parish supports:
Tearfund, working in partnership with Christian agencies and churches worldwide to tackle the causes and effects of poverty.

Further works at St. Dunstan’s
The path to the churchyard extension will be seeded with grass so we’ll need to avoid walking on this to enable the grass to establish itself. James

James
