St. Matthew’s Day

Those who are well have no need of a doctor. Jesus did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. As we worship today, let us turn back to Jesus and receive his healing.

10.00 am          Parish Eucharist
Hymns: 286, 752, 352 Psalm 119 v 65-72
Communion: 310, 105, 347

First Reading Proverbs 3:13-18
Wisdom brings much more happiness than material wealth, for those who find wisdom find life itself.

Second Reading 2 Corinthians 4:1-6
Those, like Matthew, who are engaged in the Spirit’s work, have renounced the shameful things we tend to keep hidden, and allowed the light of Christ into their darkness.

Gospel Matthew 9:9-13
Despite the mutterings and criticism of the Pharisees, Jesus calls Matthew the tax collector to be not only a disciple, but also a friend.

6.00 pm            Evensong
Readings: Ecclesiastes 5:4-12; Matthew 19:16-end
Hymns: 643, Psalm 119:33-40, 457, 156

Prayer for the Week

O Almighty God, whose blessed Son called Matthew the tax collector to be an apostle and evangelist: give us grace to forsake the selfish pursuit of gain and the possessive love of riches that we may follow in the way of your Son Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked in the coming weeks for:

  • The Church of the Province of Uganda
  • All refugees and asylum seekers driven from their homes as a result of fear, violence or intimidation
  • The people of Scotland, and politicians north and south of the border as they plan their next steps following the referendum last week
  • Those working to discover a vaccine for the Ebola virus.
  • Scouts and Guides, and all uniformed organisations for children and young people, and for their leaders
  • Those who live in Woollerton Court (PR) Haw Lane (Saunderton)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Alastair, Matt Elworthy, Uncle Frank, Katy, Albert and Georgina Cole, Susan Parkin, Lynn Nicholls
  • The recently departed: Lilian Roffey
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Gladys Jackson, Larry Mendy, Peter Steare, Helen White

Please remember the charities that the parish supports:
Cruse Bereavement Care, supporting bereaved people and enabling anyone bereaved by death to understand their grief and cope with their loss. The organisation provides support and offers information, advice, education and training services.
