Christ the King - Sunday next before Advent

This is the last Sunday of the Church’s year. Today we rejoice in Christ the King, ruler and judge of all, who sits on the throne of glory. We long to inherit the kingdom prepared for us from the foundation of the world, and gather now to worship God.

First Reading
Ezekiel 34:11-16 & 20-24
God is the shepherd who not only tends the lame and seeks out the lost, but also judges the behaviour of the flock.

Second Reading Ephesians 1:15-end
Christ has dominion over all, in heaven and earth, and the Church, and we have been promised the glorious inheritance of the saints.

Gospel Matthew 25:31-end
Christ comes as king and judges his flock, and will count anyone’s treatment of the least in society as if it were he himself who was hungry, thirsty and needed clothing.

Hymns: 382, 407, 683
Psalm 95: 1-7
Communion: 381, 554, 931

3.00pm Evensong at Owlswick
Hymns: 433, 271, 352, 500        Psalm 93
Readings: 2 Samuel 23 v 1-7 & Matthew 28 v 16-end

Prayer of the Week
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us your Son, the beloved one who was rejected, the Saviour who appeared defeated. Yet the mystery of his kingship illuminates our lives. Show us in his death the victory that crowns the ages, and in his broken body the love that unites heaven and earth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • Those caught up in the suicide bombing in Nigeria, those being persecuted in Myanmar and those who continue to suffer in Yemen
  • The people of Zimbabwe as they make a peaceful transition to a new democracy
  • Those involved in running Christian clubs/groups for children/young people in Churches, schools and other venues
  • Claims and loss adjusters as they seek to offer fair settlements to those in crisis after theft or accident losses.

Second Sunday before Advent

As we come together in worship, let us bring to mind the gifts and opportunities we have been given by God. Let us remind ourselves that God is loving and generous and always wants the best from us and for us.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Zephaniah 1 v7 & 12-end
The prophet announces that the day of the Lord is close. This will be a day when the Lord will execute judgement on all the earth, and for some there will be terrible punishment.

Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5 v 1-11
Paul likens the day of the Lord to a thief coming in the night. It will be sudden and there will be no escape from the consequences. However, unlike Zephaniah, Paul is able to soften the hard message of judgement with the hope of salvation through Jesus.

Gospel: Matthew 25 v 14-30
Large sums of money (talents) are left with three servants, with the clear expectation that they will invest the money profitably and wisely while their master is away. On the master’s return there will be a reckoning

Hymns: 395, 18, 172

Psalm 90:1-12

Communion: 929, 412, 156,

More sidespeople/welcomers required
Providing a friendly and confident welcome helps to sustain a vibrant worshipping community at St. Dunstan’s. We need three or four extra volunteers to help out at the 10 am service about 8 times each year in giving out hymn books, putting up  hymn numbers, reading the lesson (optional), and putting the hymn books etc. back at the end. It requires being at church by 9.15am and finishing at about 11.25am. In particular we need help on the 1st Sunday of the month which could be done by a family. If you are interested in finding out more/helping out please speak to Susanne Dodds (342746) or James.

All Saints’ Sunday

Today is All Saints’ Day, when we remember Christians who are no longer with us. They rest now in God’s love and not even death can separate them from our heavenly Father. We, too, can rejoice in this love, knowing that God is with us in all circumstances.

8.00am Holy Communion

First Reading Revelation 7:9-end
John’s vision of heaven contains people from every country. They are rejoicing, for their sins are washed away and their suffering has ended.

Gospel Matthew 5:1-12
Jesus ascends a mountain to deliver a great body of teaching. He begins with some surprising statements about who is blessed.

10.00am All Age Family Communion and Baptism of Angelo Williams and Jake Thomas
Hymns: 525, 819, 555 & 876
Communion: 47, 35, 856 & 67
Reading: Matthew 5 and 6 (abridged)

6.00pm Evensong
Hymns: 755, Psalm 149, 77, 232
First Reading Isaiah 65.17-end
Second Reading Hebrews 11.32-12.2

Wanted for Flower Festival 2018
Please leave Horticulture, Gardening, Garden Design and Flower Arranging books in the box in the porch. Many thanks to those who have already donated books

Situation Vacant!
We need a volunteer to come forward to fill a vacancy that has occurred. The electoral roll officer maintains the membership list of the church. The time commitment is a few hours a year except in 2019 when the membership list will need to be completely refreshed but this needn’t be too onerous. If anyone is interested in filling this role please speak to James.
