Receiving Holy Communion

A couple of years ago there was concern about sharing the common cup at Holy Communion because of the risk of infection from ‘swine flu’. Please can I reassure people that any risk associated with this virus and Holy Communion has now passed. It is perfectly safe for people to drink from the chalice rather than follow the practice of the priest ‘intincting’ or dipping the wafer in to the wine on behalf of the communicant. There are of course times, e.g. when you have a cold, when it is best to ask the priest to intinct the wafer on your behalf, but wherever possible please can I encourage (but not compel) you to “drink this...in remembrance of me”. I realise that this may be of concern to some people so please feel free to chat with me further about this. James

Cards for sale

Along with cards of the church and the flower festival there are also some individual cards for sale for various occasions. These are beautifully made with the price on the back. If you would like to purchase any of these cards please place your money in the donation box.

Act now to keep zero VAT for historic churches

Parishioners are being encouraged to object to proposed VAT changes that could see the cost of alterations and extensions to churches increase by thousands of pounds. The budget proposed to abolish the zero VAT rating for listed buildings, including churches. That means that after October 2012 churches will have to find 20 per cent more money for their work. If it comes into force, the new VAT rating will mean churches will have to find on average an extra £30,000 to £40,000 for alterations and extensions. To sign the petition against this, please go to http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/32056

Prayer for the Week

Holy God, the folly of the cross mocks our human wisdom, and the weakness of the crucified puts worldly power to shame.  Banish from our hearts every pretence of might and of knowledge, that by the power flowing from Christ’s resurrection your people may be raised up from the death of sin and fashioned into a living temple of your glory.  Amen

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • The Anglican Church in Hong Kong and for the Annual Church meetings taking place this week
  • Victims of famine, natural disaster, famine and war
  • All teachers, lecturers and other staff in schools and colleges. Good parent – teacher relationships and the work of community groups to support schools
  • Air, sea and mountain rescue organisations especially the RNLI, remembering those who have lost their lives in the service of others.
  • Residents of Walnut Crescent (L) and Hinton Crossing (B)
  • Those in need who are known in our parish:

James

Church Services – Your feedback is appreciated

The words that we use, the hymns/songs that we sing and the music that we listen to are all aids to help us draw closer to God.  As the choir develops and we look to enhance our worship, I would greatly value your feedback both positive and negative.  I am keen that our worship is both accessible and enriching as part of the Church of England. I look forward to hearing from you. James
