First Sunday of Christmas

 

In this Christmas season, let us come together with joy to worship our heavenly Father and to celebrate the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

First Reading: 1 Samuel 2.-18-20, 26
Samuel was Hannah’s son, and out of gratitude to God for release from being barren she promised to give him “to the Lord”.

Second Reading: Colossians 3.12-17
Paul tells the Colossians that becoming “God’s chosen ones” involves a clean break with the old way of life. Becoming a Christian means that all actions and words should be in Jesus’ name.

Gospel: Luke 2.41-end
This passage from Luke is the one glimpse that the New Testament gives of Jesus’ boyhood, before the next eighteen years spent growing up in Nazareth followed by his mission on earth.

Prayer of the Week
As your sons and daughters, O loving God, we come before you in thanksgiving, called and united by your eternal Word. Teach us to ponder the mystery of Nazareth, the source of your strength and the unity of our families. We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Word made flesh, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, in the splendour of eternal light, God for ever and ever Amen.

Pew movers required
After the morning service on Sunday January 13th we will need a lot of help to move the pews so that the decorators can start work the next day. If you can help (or know of someone who can) please let James know.

Redecoration of St. Dunstan’s Church
The church is beginning to look scruffy in a number of places and owing to some significant legacies and the continuing generosity of parishioners it will be possible to redecorate the whole church starting from Monday January 14th to Wednesday February 6th. The work is being undertaken by M. Simmonds Decorating Contractors and will take about 3 weeks. During this time services will continue as normal but in different locations. The 10 o’clock service will take place in the Whiteleaf Scout Centre in Courtmoor Close (please park in Mill Lane) and all other services in the church hall. As far as possible it will be ‘business as usual’. James

Dying Matters
Talking about death, dying and funerals raises big questions that it’s helpful to face at some point, but it can be hard to talk to family and friends. On Wednesday January 30th (10 am to 12 noon) or Thursday January 31st (7.30 – 9.30 pm) you are invited to come along to a session at 17 Wellington Avenue, Princes Risborough (home of Revs. Steve and Rose Williams) to think, chat and articulate these questions in a relaxed environment. A series of question cards are used to encourage conversations and to listen to others’ perspectives and experiences in small groups. The sessions are open for people of all faiths, doubts and none. To book a place on one of these sessions please contact Rev James Tomkins jamestomkins@btinternet.com 01844 275944 stating your preferred date.


Confirmation Classes
A Confirmation Service will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Aylesbury on the evening of Easter Eve, Saturday April 20th. If you (or your son/daughter) would like to consider being confirmed please contact James. Confirmation is traditionally seen as the entry point to receive Holy Communion as a person ‘confirms’ the promises made on their behalf at their Baptism. Preparation sessions will take place on Saturday April 6th and April 13th from 10am to 12 noon. James

Morning Prayer usually takes place on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8.45am to 9.05am (except Bank Holidays). During the weeks commencing January 6th and 13th morning prayer will take place on Thursday only in the church (Jan 10th) and at the Rectory (Jan 17th). Everyone welcome

Advent Fayre and Christingle success
There was a lovely atmosphere and a good crowd of people came to the delights of the Advent Fayre and the Christingle service. With the Advent Fayre over £1,000 was taken with a profit of about £850 once expenses were taken into consideration. With the Christingle a whopping £704.15 was raised for the work of the Children’s Society. Thank you to everyone who made these such enjoyable community occasions. James

Carol Singing around the village
On Thursday December 20th meeting in St. Dunstan’s Church at 6.00 pm everyone is invited to come carol singing around the village with the church choir to help raise money for charity. Afterwards refreshments will be served. If you enjoy singing please come along – singers of all standards are welcome!

Help fundraise for St Dunstan’s
If you are planning to order Christmas gifts online, did you know that you can also raise money for St Dunstan’s? Go onto the easyfundraising.org.uk website, search for ‘St Dunstan’s Church, Monks Risborough’, click the ‘support this cause’ button and create an account (you’ll need an email address) and then search for the retailer you are planning to order from. The Easy fundraising website will then take you to the required online shop, and a percentage of your spend will be donated to the church. I have been doing this for the last year or so, and have raised nearly £20. If we all did it, just think how much we could raise...I am happy to help navigate you through the minefield that can sometimes be the internet. We aim to keep the disruption to a minimum and more details will be posted as they become available. One thing we do know is that help will be needed on Sunday January 13th to move some of the pews. Yew Bush
One of the yew bushes outside the South Door has been cut back to its stump in anticipation of a path being created between the church and the back of the church hall where we hope to site two additional toilets to cater for the large number of people attending special events and services.

God calls us to prepare the way for Christ. Let us each examine our own hearts and lives, open to God’s plan and seeking ways in which to welcome him.

First Reading: Malachi 3.1-4
God’s messenger is coming to prepare the way. He will act as a refiner and purify the descendants of Levi.

Second Reading: Philippians 1.3-11
Paul thanks God for the Philippians and prays for them constantly. He longs for them and prays that their love may overflow, so that in the day of Christ they may be pure and blameless.

Gospel: Luke 3.1-6
The word of God came to John the Baptist in the fifteenth year of the Emperor Tiberius and he begins to preach his message of repentance. The famous words from Isaiah, “Prepare the way of the Lord,” describe his mission.

Prayer of the Week
God of our salvation, you strengthen the winding ways of our hearts and smooth the paths made rough by sin. Make our conduct blameless, keep our hearts watchful in holiness, and bring to perfection the good you have begun in us. We ask this through him whose coming is certain, whose day draws near: your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Advent Fayre and Christingle success
There was a lovely atmosphere and a good crowd of people came to the delights of the Advent Fayre and the Christingle service. With the Advent Fayre over £1,000 was taken with a profit of about £850 once expenses were taken into consideration. With the Christingle a whopping £704.15 was raised for the work of the Children’s Society. Thank you to everyone who made these such enjoyable community occasions. James

Carol Singing around the village
On Thursday December 20th meeting in St. Dunstan’s Church at 6.00 pm everyone is invited to come carol singing around the village with the church choir to help raise money for charity. Help fundraise for St Dunstan’s
If you are planning to order Christmas gifts online, did you know that you can also raise money for St Dunstan’s? Go onto the easyfundraising.org.uk website, search for ‘St Dunstan’s Church, Monks Risborough’, click the ‘support this cause’ button and create an account (you’ll need an email address) and then search for the retailer you are planning to order from. The Easy fundraising website will then take you to the required online shop, and a percentage of your spend will be donated to the church. I have been doing this for the last year or so, and have raised nearly £20. If we all did it, just think how much we could raise...I am happy to help navigate you through the minefield that can sometimes be the internet. Redecoration of St. Dunstan’s Church
The church is beginning to look scruffy in a number of places and owing to some significant legacies and the continuing generosity of parishioners it will be possible to redecorate the whole church starting from Monday January 14th. The work is being undertaken by M. Simmonds Decorating Contractors and will take about 3 weeks. During this time services will continue as usual but in different locations. The 10 am service will take place in the Whiteleaf Scout Centre in Courtmoor Close (please park in Mill Lane) and all other services in the church hall. We aim to keep the disruption to a minimum and more details will be posted as they become available. One thing we do know is that help will be needed on Sunday January 13th to move some of the pews. James

Yew Bush 
One of the yew bushes outside the South Door has been cut back to its stump in anticipation of a path being created between the church and the back of the church hall where we hope to site two additional toilets to cater for the large number of people attending special events and services.

Coffee and Mince Pies at the Rectory
As in the past everyone is invited for coffee and mince pies at The Rectory after the 10.00am Communion service on Sunday December 30th. Even if you don’t come to the service you are very welcome!

Confirmation Classes
A Confirmation Service will be held in the area in 2019. If you (or your son/daughter) would like to consider being confirmed please contact James before January 14th. Confirmation is traditionally seen as the entry point to receive Holy Communion as a person ‘confirms’ the promises made on their behalf at their Baptism. Preparation sessions will take place in the New Year.

Together today we offer a welcome to our king, the king of kings, who is the way, the truth and the life.

Clerk Needed for the Monks Risborough Parochial Charities (MRPC)
The charity was established in the 19th century with the aim of providing for the poor and elderly of the ancient parish of Monks Risborough. Until recently the charity donated fuel, clothes and medicines for the benefit of those in need. Today this translates into providing shopping vouchers at Christmas to the financially less well-off and assisting those with social and educational needs on an ad hoc basis. The charity derives its income from the rental of agricultural land and allotments in the area. The Trustees are currently looking for a new clerk to assist in the smooth running of the charity. The clerk’s roles are to take minutes at meetings (usually two a year), act as an initial point of enquiry for questions regarding the allotments and plots of land, managing the Charity’s finances, and making arrangements for tenancy agreements. This is a voluntary position that would suit anyone with an interest in the local community, the countryside and/or land management, and good communication skills. Volunteers required for churchyard leaf sweep
At 9.30 am on Saturday December 1st we are looking to clear the remaining fallen leaves from the churchyard. Please can you bring along a rake and/or leaf grabber if you have one and we’ll provide plenty of big, garden sacks.

On December 1st the pop up Christingle- making Factory will be happening in the Hall at 9.30am. If you would like to be part of the team or if you'd be able to help making refreshments for the leaf sweepers please let me know. Rosemary 344417

Clerk Needed for the Monks Risborough Parochial Charities (MRPC)
The charity was established in the 19th century with the aim of providing for the poor and elderly of the ancient parish of Monks Risborough. Until recently the charity donated fuel, clothes and medicines for the benefit of those in need. Today this translates into providing shopping vouchers at Christmas to the financially less well-off and assisting those with social and educational needs on an ad hoc basis. The charity derives its income from the rental of agricultural land and allotments in the area. The Trustees are currently looking for a new clerk to assist in the smooth running of the charity. The clerk’s roles are to take minutes at meetings (usually two a year), act as an initial point of enquiry for questions regarding the allotments and plots of land, managing the Charity’s finances, and making arrangements for tenancy agreements. This is a voluntary position that would suit anyone with an interest in the local community, the countryside and/or land management, and good communication skills. Advent Fair – Saturday November 24th 10 am to noon
The stalls will include jewellery, craft items, cards and gift tags, cakes and produce, plants and bulbs, raffle, children’s corner and lots more. Cathy Farquhar is organising a lovely hamper as the main raffle prize. If you can supply/buy one or more of the following items (sherry, white wine, red wine, port, tea, coffee, chutney, Christmas cake, Christmas crackers, festive serviettes, Christmas pudding, posh nibbles, crackers (for cheese), chocolates, biscuits, mince pies) please can you write your name next to the item on the list in the porch.  Items are needed by Sunday 19th November.  High quality raffle prizes are also required. God in the life of…Paula Salmon
Up until a few years ago we ran a very successful series of talks that took the place of the sermon slot at the 10 am service. This was called ‘God in the life of…’ and gave the opportunity for people to speak about how their faith and life intersected. On occasions this proved quite challenging to listen to as real issues were talked about. Paula Salmon (accompanied by Rev. Charlotte Collins) will be talking from their experiences about mental health on November 25th at the 10 am service. This will touch on difficult and sensitive subjects so if anyone is affected by any of the issues raised details will be available so that people have the chance to follow through any issues that may arise and affect them. Volunteers required for churchyard leaf sweep
At 9.30 am on Saturday December 1st we are looking to clear the remaining fallen leaves from the churchyard. Please can you bring along a rake and/or leaf grabber if you have one and we will provide plenty of garden sacks.

Elves Required

‘Advent Reflections on Waiting’ is the four-session course taking place at 7.30 pm at 7 Mead Acre, based on the book by Dr Paula Gooder: ‘The Meaning of Waiting’.
