Sunday 16th February

Sunday Before Lent

As God’s beloved children, let us join with all the beauty of creation in coming before God in praise and worship. We approach just as we are, with all our dreams and hopes, all our worries and struggles, all our gladness and sadness.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Genesis 1.1-2.3
God speaks the world into creation. On the sixth day, human beings are created in God’s image. God is united with us from the very beginning. We are given responsibility for looking after others.

Second Reading: Romans 8.18-25
Creation is fallen. Suffering is built into the fabric of life. Like a woman in labour, all of us must endure pain before the future promise of glory as God’s children.

Gospel: Matthew 6.25-end
As part of Jesus’ long discourse known as the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us not to worry. We concern ourselves with how our needs will be met. But our heavenly Father is ahead of us. The key for us is to place God and God’s kingdom first.

Hymns: 476, 736, 186, 32.
Communion: 455, 590, 937.

6.00pm Evensong
First Reading: Proverbs 8.1, 22-31
Second Reading: Revelation 4
Hymns; 120, 25, 428: Psalm 148.

Prayer of the week:
All seeing God, you alone judge rightly by our innermost thoughts. Teach us to observe your law from the heart even as we keep it outwardly. Purify our desires, calm every anger and reconcile us to one another. Then will our worship at your alter render your perfect praise. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • East Africa where heavy rains in October and November have allowed desert locusts to swarm and devastate crops, pastures and farmer’s livelihoods this month.
  • People of Puerto Rico who are devastated by destructive hurricanes, earthquakes and aftershocks.
  • University undergraduates, for the development of both academic and social horizons.
  • Chiltern Railways, Arriva Buses, Taxi Drivers and others working in public transport.
  • Park Meadow (PR) Studridge Lane (Sp)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
    • Pam Johnson, Michael Hopkins, Elsie Ratlidge, Pam Baldwin and family
  • And also further afield for:
    • Alastair, Georgina Cole, Ginny Gibbs, Cathy Owen, Gail, Suzy Cooper, Jonathan Kelly, Joshua, Bill, Sue, Marriette
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Jean Kingham, Susan Watson, Arthur Howes, Betty Newport, Alf Godfrey, Den Botten, Len Walsham, Bert Keeping.

Can I please encourage you to join me in saying this prayer each day for all of us at St Dunstan’s during the Vacancy?     Thank you.  Rob
Heavenly Father,
We thank you for the life of St Dunstan’s over many centuries: for its worship, its ministry and its mission within and to the local community. We thank you for the privilege of being members of the Church today.
During this Vacancy, strengthen us with your Holy Spirit, that our worship may be more worthy,
our witness more effective, our lives more holy, and renew our enthusiasm to share all that you call us to be and do for the honour of our Lord Jesus Christ.
