Sunday 9th February
Third Sunday Before Lent
Let us consider our true identities in God’s kingdom. Called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, our role is to point others towards God.
10.00am Parish Communion
First Reading: Isaiah 58 v 1-12
Although Israel fasts, it is not the fast that God chooses. Instead, God calls on them to loose the bonds of injustice and then light shall break forth and the ancient ruins will be rebuilt.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2 v 1-16
Paul tells the Corinthians that he did not come to them with lofty words or wisdom, and that God’s wisdom is not of this age. God has revealed wisdom through the Spirit and those not taught by the Spirit do not receive spiritual gifts.
Gospel: Matthew 5 v 13-20
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells his followers they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Furthermore, he tells them he has not come to abolish the law and the prophets, but to fulfill them. Only those whose righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees will enter the kingdom of heaven.
Hymns: 171, 367, 88, 684.
Communion: 417, 180, 948.
11.30am Owlswick Holy Communion
Readings: 1 Corinthians 2 v 1-16, Matthew 5 v 13-20
6.00pm Evensong
First Reading: Amos 2 v 4-end
Second Reading: Ephesians 4 v 17-end
Hymns; 224, 447, 483: Psalm 4.
