Christ is Risen! Let us arise and give thanks.

First Reading                Isaiah 25: 6-9

Isaiah’s prophecy was created during prolonged conflict with overbearing superpowers.  Yet as Isaiah sees all nations rejoicing in God, his prophetic vision stimulates trust rather than revenge.

Gospel Reading             Mark 16:1-8

Mark’s Gospel is thought to be the reminiscences of Peter. Perhaps he said the final sentence with a wry smile: of course God didn’t’ let the story end there, for here we are!

6.00pm             Choral Evensong

Readings: Ezekiel 37: 1-14; Luke 24: 13-35

Hymns: 354, Psalm 105:1-11, 754, 638

Receiving Holy Communion

A couple of years ago there was concern about sharing the common cup at Holy Communion because of the risk of infection from ‘swine flu’. Please can I reassure people that any risk associated with this virus and Holy Communion has now passed. It is perfectly safe for people to drink from the chalice rather than follow the practice of the priest ‘intincting’ or dipping the wafer in to the wine on behalf of the communicant. There are of course times, e.g. when you have a cold, when it is best to ask the priest to intinct the wafer on your behalf, but wherever possible please can I encourage (but not compel) you to “drink this...in remembrance of me”. I realise that this may be of concern to some people so please feel free to chat with me further about this. James

Cards for sale

Along with cards of the church and the flower festival there are also some individual cards for sale for various occasions. These are beautifully made with the price on the back. If you would like to purchase any of these cards please place your money in the donation box.

Act now to keep zero VAT for historic churches

Parishioners are being encouraged to object to proposed VAT changes that could see the cost of alterations and extensions to churches increase by thousands of pounds. The budget proposed to abolish the zero VAT rating for listed buildings, including churches. That means that after October 2012 churches will have to find 20 per cent more money for their work. If it comes into force, the new VAT rating will mean churches will have to find on average an extra £30,000 to £40,000 for alterations and extensions. To sign the petition against this, please go to http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/32056

Christian Aid Soup Day

Many thanks to our soup-makers and supporters who have raised over £100 this year
£88 can provide a loan for Nicaraguan farmers to buy a grain store to protect their crops, and £10 can pay for boat hire to deliver food packages to those affected by floods in Bolivia. Thanks for making this happen.

Festival of Prayer

The Festival of Prayer 2012 is a day conference for those who would like to taste or delve deeper into different ways of praying. It builds on the success of the first Festival last year. It takes place on Saturday 7th July from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at Ripon College, Cuddesdon, nr Wheatley, Oxford OX44 9EX.
