Sunday 28th July 2019

Sixth Sunday after Trinity

Our readings today focus on the theme of prayer, reminding us that we are called to bring ourselves, our concerns and the concerns of the world continuously to God.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Genesis 18 v 20-32
In the face of the wickedness of the actions of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham prays. In this prayer, we see Abraham’s compassion for the people; and we hear his holy argument with God, on their behalf.

Second Reading: Colossians 2 v 6-15
A reminder of who we are, children of God, and who God is – our merciful and faithful Saviour. Rooted in Christ, we can grow strong. In all this we are called to lives of abundant gratitude.

Gospel: Luke 11 v 1-13
The disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. He gives them the Lord’s Prayer, and tells them stories about persistence in bringing human need to God.

Hymns: 379, 690, 12, 178 (omitting verses 2 & 3).
Communion: 575, 610, 69
Anthem: If ye love me, T. Tallis

6.00pm Lighthouse Commissioning Service
(Princes Risborough Secondary School Playing Fields)

Prayer of the week:

Provident Father, with the prayer your Son taught us always on our lips, we ask, we seek, we knock at your door. In our every need, grant us the first and best of all your gifts, the Spirit who makes us your children. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

 Sustaining the Sacred Centre
Once again we hope you will support the various services during August under the umbrella of ‘Sustaining the Sacred Centre.’ Each day there will be a short service of approximately 20 minutes to complement the existing services already held
The additional services will be at St Dunstan’s on Friday evenings (8.00 pm) and late Saturday afternoons (5.00 pm) and, as before, on Tuesday evenings (6.00 pm) there will be a ‘Service of Reflection’ at St Peter’s, Owlswick.
The services, especially at Owlswick will reflect on the life and writings of Mother Julian of Norwich, a 14th Century woman of prayer who had a remarkable life and who wrote about her experiences of God in a book, still available, known as “Revelations of Divine Love.” What she learned is still relevant for us today. James and Rob

Tuesday (6.00 pm): Service of Reflection at Owlswick
Wednesday (8.45 am): Morning Prayer at St. Dunstan’s

Monks Risborough Horticultural Show, August 3rd
Have you ever been to our Show? You should come! It is one of the best horticultural shows in the area. If you would like to enter then a booklet and entry form is available on the table by the south door. But it is also much more than that and provides an afternoon of entertainment for all the family. This is an annual event now in its 111th year. As well as the large marquee where wonderful floral, vegetable and domestic exhibits are displayed and judged there will be a Silver Band, the ever-popular Tea-tent, a fun Dog Show, Ferret Racing, a Beer Tent and Burger Bar, Children's Rides and entertainment and numerous Stalls offering a wide variety of goods for sale. Stall holders welcome to apply for a pitch. The show opens earlier this year at 11.30 am so that you can enjoy lunch and finishes at approx. 4.30 p.m. Rangers’ Football Ground is at the bottom of Peter’s Lane on A4010, Monks Risborough, Buckinghamshire HP27 9LZ

Bucks County Show, Thursday 29th August

Rev. Jenny Edmans is once again organising the Rest-a-While Marquee at the Bucks County Show on Thursday 29th August.  This is always very well supported by attendees of the Show and Jenny is now organising the cakes and rota for the marquee and is asking for 20 cakes from each Deanery and volunteers to serve and chat to people on the day.  These are slots of one hour from 10.00am to 4.00pm. She needs hosts (to chat to people and clear tables) – two people for each of the following slots: 10.00am – 11.00am; 11.00am – 12 noon; 12 noon – 1.00pm; 1.00pm – 2.00pm. In addition she needs people to help serve the teas, coffee and cake throughout the day.
Volunteers can claim £5 towards the entrance cost to the show ground. Jenny is going to contact people who have helped in the past but she would be delighted if new people came forward to help! Her e-mail address is   jennyedmans@aol.com

Silent Prayer Meeting: Monday July 29th at 8pm
We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. Each meeting in the church hall lasts about 45 minutes. The meeting starts with some simple relaxation exercises, a short passage from the Bible to reflect upon in the half hour of silence, followed by a time of sharing of our experiences if people wish. James

St. Dunstan’s Millenium Kneeler
Further copies of this fascinating leaflet about the kneelers in front of the altar rail are available from the leaflet rack on the table by the south door. James

Ridgeway and Thames National Trail

There are some free leaflets about the above on the table by the south door along with a book of Ridgeway poems called ‘Dorset Footsteps’ that can be bought by leaving a donation in the donation box on the pillar. James

Fellowship party
Very many thanks to everyone who contributed to this - to those who came, those who helped prepare the buffet, those who helped washing up and clearing away. Great team effort! Cheers, Rosemary
