Welcome!

We hope you will enjoy worshipping here with us.

Sunday 19th May 2013
Pentecost and St. Dunstan’s Day

Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost and the coming of God’s Holy Spirit. As we join together to worship let us also be united by the Spirit of wisdom and truth, which is the gift of Jesus to us, his brothers and sisters.

8.00am Holy Communion

First Reading Acts 2 v 1-21
God’s Holy Spirit descends upon the disciples so that they can witness to Jews from all over the world as they gather in  Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. Peter tells the assembly that this is the outpouring of the Spirit of God  foretold by the prophet Joel.

Gospel John 14.8-17 & 25-27
Jesus promises to his disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit who will be with them always when he has gone to be with his Father.

11.00am All Age Family Service Without Communion

Readings: Acts 2 v 1-21
Hymns: St. Dunstan’s hymn, 666, 332, 555, 419

 6.00pm Choral Evensong

Readings: Exodus 33 v 7-20, 2 Corinthians 3 v4 - end
Hymns: 476, Psalm 33, 114, 541

Prayer for the Week
Send down, O God, upon your people the flame of your Holy Spirit, and fill with the abundance of your sevenfold gift the Church you bought forth from your Son’s pierced side. May your life-giving Spirit lend fire to our words and strength to our weakness. Send us forth to the nations of the world to proclaim with boldness your wondrous work of raising Christ to your right hand. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  •  The people of Syria following reports of the use of chemical weapons; and the people, police, armed forces and government of Afghanistan as that country rebuilds itself.
  •  For all teenagers and children in care
  •  Blacksmiths and bell ringers, just some of the crafts that St. Dunstan is the patron saint of
  •  The archaeological dig and plans to extend the churchyard at St. Dunstan’s
  • We pray for our local faith communities and for our inter faith officers and groups, for the World Congress of Faith
  •  Risborough Upper School, its pupils, staff, head and governors
  •  Picts Lane (PR) St Peters Close & Archway (Sp)
  •  Those in need who are known in our parish:
  •  and also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Richard Irvine, Alastair, Marion Mullens
  •  The recently departed:
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Monica Arnold, William Plater

Please remember the charities that the parish supports, in particular this week:
The Church Housing Trust, dedicated to the rehabilitation and resettlement of homeless people of all ages and backgrounds.

Hymn for St. Dunstan (tune: Blaenwern)

Come, ye people, sing together
To the glory of our King,
Who has blessed us through the ages;
Gladly let our praises ring.
Praise Him for His servant Dunstan
Whom as Patron here we claim
Through a thousand years in England
He has borne the saintly name.

Found by God a faithful shepherd
Fit His flock on earth to lead,
Fearless in the face of danger,
Holy both in word and deed.
Wise in counsel, firm in purpose,
Strong through Sacrament and prayer,
In the Church’s Faith enabled
For her Lord to do and dare.

King of Saints, Who in such measure
To Saint Dunstan grace didst send,
See Thy children bow before Thee;
Keep us faithful to the end.
Grant that Dunstan’s prayers may aid us
As we tread the path he trod,
Through temptation, trial, suffering
Pressing onward up to God.
