Fourth Sunday of Lent

Mothering Sunday

The journey a woman takes in motherhood is one replete with joy and love, but also deeply connected with the suffering and pain that we encounter in the season of Lent.  So today we come together as the family of God, and in our thoughts and prayers we hold motherhood in all its fullness.

8.00 am   Holy Communion (BCP)
10.00 am Mothering Sunday Service (without Communion)
Hymns: 6 (omit vs. 4 & 5), 450, 503, 162, 332
Bible Reading: John 6:1-15

11.30am            Owlswick Holy Communion (BCP)

Readings: 2 Corinthians 5:16-end, Luke 15:1-3, 11b-end

6:00pm   Choral Evensong
Readings: Isaiah 40:27- 41:13, 2 Timothy 4:1-18
Hymns: 297, psalm 12, 718, 323

Prayer for the Week
God of compassion, you await the sinner’s return and spread a feast to welcome home the lost.  Save us from the temptations that lead away from you, and draw us back by the constancy of your love, that we may take our place in your household and gladly share our inheritance with others.  Grant this though Christ our liberator from sin, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Sprit, holy and mighty God for ever and ever.  Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • The people of Syria at a time of deep suffering, and the people of North and South Korea at time of growing tension
  • All mothers and those who have the care of children, especially the family and friends of Christina Edkins killed on her way to school in Birmingham
  • The archaeological dig and plans to extend the churchyard at St. Dunstan’s
  • Air, Sea and Mountain rescue organisations, especially the RNLI remembering those who have lost their lives in the service of others.
  • The mission, ministry and congregational life of the Methodist Church, Princes Risborough.
  • Residents of: Walkers Road (L), Cross Lane (B)
  • Those in need who are known in our parish:
  • and also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Richard Irvine, Alastair, Marion Mullens
  • The recently departed: Marjorie Browne
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Ethel Seager, Anthony Boyson.
Please remember the charities that the parish supports, in particular this week:
ROPE – Relief for Oppressed People Everywhere
Combating oppressive poverty across the world and striving to change the lives of the poor.

Quiet Day for Holy Week: Sat 23rd 9.45am - 4pm
This will be held at Lee Common Methodist Chapel to reflect upon the forthcoming events of Holy Week.  There will be short readings, music and reflections followed by time and space for your own thoughts and an opportunity to walk in the surrounding countryside. The day concludes with a simple service of Holy Communion.  Lee Common Methodist Chapel is only 10 miles away set in the midst of the beautiful Chiltern Hills.  The cost is £5 per person with a limited number of spaces available.  Please bring your own lunch. The address of the chapel is Oxford Street, Lee Common, Great Missenden, HP16 9JP. If you are interested in coming along please let James know.

Passion Narrative – Director Required!
Many people will be aware that on the Sunday before Easter (March 24th) in place of the sermon we usually have a reading of the passion Narrative. The script is already written so it just requires someone to take on the role of co-ordinating a group of adults to speak out the various parts that make up the story. If you are interested in co-ordinating this please let James know.  No previous acting experience required!

Cook required!
As part of the sunrise service at the top of Whiteleaf Cross on Easter Sunday we cook bacon sandwiches for those who come along. If you are a dab hand with a frying pan and can cook up this treat for about 40 people please let James know.

Easter Lilies in memory of a loved one
If you would like to take part please write legibly your name and the person(s) whom you wish to be remembered on the clipboard near the door. If you would like to make a donation please put the contribution into a blue gift aid envelope and write “Easter Lily” on the envelope, write your name & address on it if you are a taxpayer and put it in the wooden chest on the pillar or hand to Rev James Tomkins.

Electoral Roll
Every six years the church electoral roll is completely revised. Forms will need to be completed and returned by March 31st to the electoral roll officer Mr Roger Timms, Nags Head House, Aylesbury Road, Monks Risborough,  HP27 0JT. Forms are available in St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s.

Spring Concert, Saturday April 20th 7.00 pm
The musicians from the Trio D’Hiver are back by demand
playing a popular programme of classical music including pieces by Beethoven and Dvorak. Tickets are £8.00 (special deals apply) from Pat Kimber Tel 273942 or David Shuttle in Princes Risborough.

Easter Cross
To celebrate Easter Day we are making an Easter Cross out of flowers. At the 10 am service everyone is invited to bring flowers to stick in to and decorate the Cross that will have been made. A picture of such a Cross can be found on the notice board in the porch. Torie Collinge and Gwen Miles

Parish Safeguarding Role – volunteer required
This is an important role within the parish to ensure that we have the proper procedures in place to ensure the safety of children and vulnerable adults who take part in our church activities. Please can you speak to either Susanne Dodds (342746) who is the current officer or James if you are interested in finding out more.

Grass Cutting
If you have a few hours to spare every other week in the churchyard during the growing season please speak with James.

Confirmation
Confirmation is traditionally seen as an entry point to receive Holy Communion and/or point in which a person wishes to affirm their faith publicly. If you and/or your child are interested in being confirmed please speak with James

Sidespersons (welcomers)
We are very fortunate to have a group of people who help to welcome people to services. If you would like your name to be included as part of this group of people please let James, Sue or Rosemary know.
