Third Sunday of Lent

Today we focus on the encounter, told in the Gospel of John, between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. So in our worship let us reflect on how we encounter Jesus in our own lives. In what spirit do we meet Jesus? How could we make these encounters richer?

First Reading     Exodus 17:1-7
The Israelites, led by Moses, camp at Rephidim, where there is no water. Thirsty and frightened, they turn on Moses, who turns to the Lord. The Lord instructs Moses to strike the rock with his staff, and water will come out.

Second Reading      Romans 5:1-11
Paul writes to the Romans that we are justified by faith. Suffering, he writes, produces endurance, which in turn produces character and ultimately hope. God proved his love for us in that Christ died for us while we were still sinners. Consequently we are justified by his blood, and reconciled to God through his death.

Gospel      John 4:5-15
Jesus rests by Jacob’s well in a Samaritan city, where he meets a local woman and tells her about “living water”.

Prayer for the Week

God, living and true, look upon your people, whose dry and stony hearts are parched with thirst. Unseal the living water of your spirit; let it become within us an ever-flowing spring, leaping up into eternal life. Thus may we worship you in spirit and in truth through Christ, our deliverance and hope, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, holy and mighty God for ever and ever. Amen.

• The people of the Ukraine and Crimea, as they try to move forward to a peaceful and stable life, after the recent violence and upheaval.
• All those affected by the recent missing Malaysian airplane: for those aboard it, passengers and crew; for their families awaiting news; and for all the services working together to find answers.

• Groups who help those suffering from addictions, especially related to drugs and alcohol

Situations vacant
Help is currently required in a number of specific areas. First there is a vacancy for churchwarden. If you have an interest in the fabric of our church buildings and would like to take on a lead role within the church congregation then please speak with James, Sue or Susanne. There is a role description to have a look at on the table. There is also a need to have someone from St. Dunstan’s to be a representative for Lighthouse. Again a role description has been produced for this. Please speak with James if you are interested in finding out more. It would be great as well to have more people involved in helping to put on events at St. Dunstan’s. If you can join the events team who serve drinks, move pews, plan activities etc. please speak with James. Finally we need to recruit additional people (children or adults) to help set up and/or serve and/or tidy away the bread and wine at the Parish Eucharist. If you are interested in finding out more please speak with Sheila or James.

New Service Booklets
To support the introduction of the new seasonal service booklets on April 27th the second of two sermons on ‘worship’ will be given today entitled ‘The Eucharist’. The first new seasonal booklet approved by the PCC should be available to look at from the beginning of April. There will also be an article in the April/May and following edition of the newsletter about the new services and the significance of the bread and wine at Holy Communion. James and Rob

‘Open House’ at The Rectory, 8pm Monday March 24th
This is a chance to explore and to ask questions of faith in a relaxed and friendly environment. Please come along to watch a short DVD followed by a time of discussion. James

St. Dunstan's Fellowship
The next walk is on Tuesday 25th March – please meet in the layby off the A4010 at 9.15am. Knit-ins” will be in the Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month starting at 2.00pm. On April 10th at 8.00pm in the Church Hall, Jill Carey will present “From the native to the exotic – Gardens of New Zealand”. Everyone is welcome.

Risborough Cares Charity AGM
Risborough Cares is holding its Annual General Meeting on Thursday 27th March 2014. This will be in the Lower Hall of the Princes Centre in Clifford Road. Tea /coffee will be available from 7pm and the meeting will commence at 7.30pm. Details of funds that have accumulated in Risborough Cares Charity accounts for the Princes Centre will be available. All welcome.

Church Annual Meetings, April 7th
Drinks will be served from 7.30 pm with the meetings starting at 8 pm. Apologies can be sent to Douglas Miller (01844 343206). The meetings elect the two churchwardens for the coming year; give a chance to review/comment on church life over the past 12 months and look ahead to the coming year. Reports for the meetings are now available for your perusal. If you are not coming to the meeting please can you return the copy you take so that there is enough for everyone at the meeting to have a copy.

Friendship Group
We meet in the church hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 2.30pm. The next meeting is Wednesday 16th April.

Easter Lilies in Memory of a Loved One
Once again there is the opportunity for parishioners to donate the cost of an Easter lily as part of an arrangement in memory of a loved one. If you would like to take part, please write your name and the person(s) whom you wish to remember on the list in the Church or contact Jenny Masterton-Smith on 01844 273538 or Gwen Miles 01844 345230. To make your donation, please put your contribution into a blue gift aid envelope and write “Easter Lily” on it, (with your name & address on, if you are a taxpayer) Please put the envelope into the wooden chest on the pillar or hand it to James Tomkins.

Lighthouse 2014
There are a whole host of volunteering opportunities again this year. From craft, first aid, cooking, car parking etc. There is something for everyone to get involved with. Please take a copy of the A4 green flyer.

Readers required for Good Friday service of reflection
This service at ‘the foot of the Cross’ at 2 pm requires five people to read short reflections as part of this service. If you are interested in being either the soldier, Mary, the thief, Mary of Magdala or the disciple John, please let James know.

Silent Prayer Meeting, Monday March 17th at 8pm:
We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. All are welcome to these meetings of any faith or none. The meeting starts with some simple relaxation exercises, a short passage from the Bible to reflect upon in the half hour of silence, followed by a time of sharing of our experiences if people wish. Christian Aid Super Soup Lunch March 19th
This is taking place in the hall from 12.30-2.15pm. Do come along for a friendly get together with soup, crusty bread and tea/coffee, for only £4.50.

Let us go with Jesus into the wilderness, that we may face our own demons, and renew our faith in the God who shows us his truth.

Lord our God in every age you call a people to hear your word and to do your will. Renew us in these Lenten days: washed clean of sin, sealed with the Spirit, and sustained by your living bread, may we remain true to our calling and, with the elect, serve you alone. Grant this through Christ, our liberator from sin, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, holy and mighty God for ever and ever.

Time to pray?
On Saturday March 15th at The Rectory from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon, there will be time to enjoy some coffee and cake with a theme of ‘prayers of intercession’. This is aimed towards those people who currently lead the prayers on a Sunday morning, those people who think they might wish to have a try at this or those who have a particular interest in this area. There will be a chance to share current practice, some hints and tips and plenty of time for questions. If you are interested in coming please speak with James or Rob.

Revised Church Electoral Roll
The electoral roll seeks to reflect church membership as closely as possible and provides a general barometer of the vibrancy of the worshipping community. If you are not currently on the electoral roll please complete and return an electoral roll form by March 17th to the electoral roll officer: Mr Roger Timms, Nags Head House, Aylesbury Road, Monks Risborough,  HP27 0JT. Forms are available in the church porch or from Roger.

More welcomers (sidespersons) required
It is frequently commented on how friendly the church is. This is in part owing to the welcome given by those who give out the books, read the lessons etc. on a Sunday morning. If you are interested in being involved in this role please can you speak to James, Sue or Susanne. The commitment is one or two Sundays every three or four months. At the Annual Meeting on April 7th existing sidespeople are usually automatically re-elected.

Bloxham Festival of Faith and Literature

Prayer for the Week
God of justice, rock of our salvation, open our minds and hearts to Jesus your Son. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns in you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

‘The Big Dig’ Talk – March 8th at 7 pm.
Following the archaeological dig in 2013 at St. Dunstan’s, Jill Eyers who was in charge of the dig has agreed to come back to give a talk on “The Monks of Monks Risborough - the story as seen from the Big Dig at St Dunstan's”. The talk will be held on Saturday March 8th in the church. TICKETS HAVE NOW SOLD OUT. A complimentary glass of wine/soft drink will be served as part of the evening with the chance to ask questions at the end of the talk.

St. Dunstan's Fellowship
The AGM will be held on 13th March and preceded by Communion at 7.30pm. Refreshments: Peta Voss & Rita List. The next walk is on Tuesday 25th March – please meet in the layby off the A4010 at 9.15am. Knit-ins” will be in the Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month starting at 2.00pm.

Church Flowers
The Church Flower Team would be delighted to hear from anyone who would be interested to join our team. They would be very welcome to meet other members at a workshop on Wednesday 12th March in the Church Hall at 10am. Time to pray?
On Saturday March 15th at The Rectory from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon, there will be time to enjoy some coffee and cake with a theme of ‘prayers of intercession’. This is aimed towards those people who currently lead the prayers on a Sunday morning, those people who think they might wish to have a try at this or those who have a particular interest in this area. There will be a chance to share current practice, some hints and tips and plenty of time for questions. If you are interested in coming please speak with James or Rob.



Revised Church Electoral Roll
The electoral roll seeks to reflect church membership as closely as possible and provides a general barometer of the vibrancy of the worshipping community. If you are not currently on the electoral roll please complete and return an electoral roll form by March 17th to the electoral roll officer: Mr Roger Timms, Nags Head House, Aylesbury Road, Monks Risborough,  HP27 0JT. Forms are available in the church porch or from Roger.

More welcomers (sidespersons) required
It is frequently commented on how friendly the church is. This is in part owing to the welcome given by those who give out the books, read the lessons etc. on a Sunday morning. If you are interested in being involved in this role please can you speak to James, Sue or Susanne. The commitment is one or two Sundays every three or four months. At the Annual Meeting on April 7th existing sidespeople are usually automatically re-elected.

Christian Aid Super Soup Lunch March 19th
This is taking place in the hall from 12.30-2.15pm. Do come along for a friendly get together with soup, crusty bread and tea/coffee, for only £4.50. How can you resist? If anyone would like to volunteer to make some soup (all flavours welcome), please let Rosemary know if you can help on 344417. Many thanks to those who have already offered to be chefs!

The Bethany House Group

Jesus compares the serenity and beauty of creation with the anxieties which can dominate our lives and our outlook on life. Instead, he urges us to “strive for the kingdom of God”.

Your help is required today, and it won’t cost a penny!
This year will see further major expenditure to complete the churchyard extension (£12,000) and repair the stonework to the church (£20,000). If you add in from 2013 the cost of the archaeological dig (£17,000), the cleaning of the organ (£4,000), the tree work in the churchyard (£5,000) and the installation of a roof alarm (£4,000), the total spent on major projects over the past two years will be £62,000. More repairs are likely in the foreseeable future e.g. the replacement of the church boiler at an estimated cost of £8,000. Much of this cost is being met out of the church’s reserves but we are also applying for various grants that are available. One of these grants is potentially worth £15,000. To help in this application, a photograph of the whole congregation will be taken immediately after the 10am service TODAY. Please can you stay behind for five minutes after the service to take part in this. James

This will take place on March 7th in the Methodist Church at 11.00 am. There is a booklet on the notice board if you'd like to read about it. All welcome!

We have come together to worship the God who loves us wholeheartedly. May we learn to respond with our whole hearts and to share that love with those around us.

God calls us to work together and help others to grow in faith, but such growth is ultimately from God and should not be a source of quarrelling or jealousy between Christian factions.

Copies of a draft Parish Eucharist for Easter
We have some copies of the updated order of service for the Parish Eucharist for the season of Easter. If people could share these around, pass their comments on to the worship group and put the copies back on the table so that others can have a look at them that would be very helpful. Friendship Group
We meet in the church hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 2.30pm. The next meeting is Wednesday 19th February.

‘Open house’ – Wednesday February 19th
This group meets every six to eight weeks on different evenings to explore various issues of faith. Each evening begins with a DVD. The next meeting is on Wednesday February 19th at 8 pm at the Rectory. The DVD is entitled ‘She’ and picks up on the female imagery of God. All are welcome. For more information please contact James.

The Lord calls out “Come who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest.” Let us gather together to worship the Lord and receive from him

First Reading Isaiah 58:1-12
The prophet Isaiah casts his eye over the worship practices of his people and finds them wanting. The people are enjoined to fast by letting the oppressed go free and to share with the poor. Then shall they see God's light and healing break forth like the dawn. 

Second Reading 1 Corinthians 2:1-16
The Apostle Paul proclaims his desire to know nothing but Jesus Christ and him crucified, all through the power of the Holy Spirit. This knowledge is set against the world's wisdom, which cannot understand the ways of God and calls them folly. 

Gospel Matthew 5:13-20
The followers of Jesus are salt and light in the world. Jesus did not come to abolish the law but to fulfil it and through him it will be accomplished. It is only those whose righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees who can be said to be in the kingdom of heaven.

Prayer for the Week
Heavenly Father, you have called your Church to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Give us vigorous faith and a love that is genuine, so that all may see our works and give you the glory. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns in you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked in the coming weeks for:

• Peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan, Ukraine, Syria, the Central African Republic, and between Israel and Palestine.
  
• All those who have been affected by the recent bad weather, especially for the people of Somerset and others locally who have lost so much.
• Farmers who have been unable to work on their lands and whose livestock and crops are at risk
• The Anglican Church of Canada.
• After schools clubs, giving thanks for the many volunteers who work on behalf of children.

Copies of a draft Parish Eucharist for Easter
Following a meeting of the worship group, my sermon a few weeks ago and the recent PCC meeting we have some copies of the updated order of service for the Parish Eucharist for the season of Easter. If people could share these around, pass their comments on to the worship group and put the copies back on the table so that others can have a look at them that would be very helpful. The service focuses on the resurrection and in due course it is hoped that there will be other services produced to cover most of the season’s in the church’s year e.g. Lent and Advent. Thank you, James and Rob.

St. Dunstan's Fellowship
On Thursday 13th February, we are holding a members evening “Winter Warming Music”, in the church hall at 8 pm. Refreshments: Morna Hinch. The next walk is on Tuesday 25th February – please meet in the layby off the A4010 at 9.15am. Knit-ins” will be in the Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month starting at 2.00pm.

Friendship Group
We meet in the church hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 2.30pm. The next meeting is Wednesday 19th February.

‘Open house’ – Wednesday February 19th
This group meets every six to eight weeks on different evenings to explore various issues of faith. Each evening begins with a DVD. The next meeting is on Wednesday February 19th at 8 pm at the Rectory. All are welcome. For more information please contact James.

‘The Big Dig’ Talk – March 8th at 7 pm
Following the archaeological dig in 2013 at St. Dunstan’s, Jill Eyers who was in charge of the dig has agreed to come back to give a talk on “The Monks of Monks Risborough - the story as seen from the Big Dig at St Dunstan's”. The talk will be held on Saturday March 8th in the church. Tickets are £5 and are available from Pat Kimber (01844) 273942. A complimentary glass of wine/soft drink will be served as part of the evening with the chance to ask questions at the end of the talk. If you would like extracts of the electronic copy of the report of the dig that has been compiled please send an email to James. If you do not have access to e mail but would like to see parts of the report please can you buddy up with a person who does have internet access so that they can let you have sight of them. James

Revised Church Electoral Roll
The electoral roll seeks to reflect church membership as closely as possible and provides a general barometer of the vibrancy of the worshipping community. If you are not currently on the electoral roll please complete and return an electoral roll form by March 17th to the electoral roll officer: Mr Roger Timms, Nags Head House, Aylesbury Road, Monks Risborough,  HP27 0JT. Bloxham Festival of Faith and Literature
