Second Reading Acts 11:27 – 12:2

The early Christians face a time of famine and of violent persecution, which results in the death of James.

Gospel Matthew 20:20-28

A request for the best places in the kingdom gives Jesus a chance to teach about his own concept of greatness.

Prayer for the week

Provident Father,
with the prayer your Son taught us always on our lips, we ask, we seek, we knock at your door.
In our every need, grant us the first and best of all your gifts, the Spirit who makes us your children.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.

Prayer for St. James

Merciful God,
whose holy apostle Saint James,
leaving his father and all that he had,
was obedient to the calling of your Son Jesus Christ
and followed him even to death:
help us, forsaking the false attractions of the world,
to be ready at all times
to answer your call without delay;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

All of the children attending and young people/adults helping at Lighthouse

Those killed and injured in recent days in the continuing violence in Afghanistan

All those who are suffering through drought and food shortages in the Sahel region of Africa

Companies developing applications of technology to protect businesses and individuals.

St Teresa's RC School, its pupils, staff, head and governors.

Those living in Stockwell Lane & Stopps Orchard (Monks Risborough), Icknield Court (Princes Risborough) and Ivy Close (Longwick).

Those in need who are known in our parish

and also further afield

Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time

Please remember the charities that St Dunstan's supports, in particular this week:
Christian Blind Mission, an international Christian development organisation committed to improving the quality of life of persons with disabilities in the poorest countries of the world.

Public Meeting – Thursday July 29th , 7.30 and petition

Some of you will be aware that the Red Cross day centre along with other centres across the county are under threat of closure. A public meeting is being held at the British Legion, Bell Street, Princes Risborough on July 29th at 7.30 pm. Please attend and give us your support to prevent the closure of the Red Cross and the Adults Day Centre. John Bercow our MP, Speaker for the House of Commons and representatives from Bucks County Council and Princes Risborough Town Council will be speaking at this meeting. Your views are important. You are also invited to sign the petition on the table.

Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir Summer Concert

This famous choir will be holding a concert in St Mary's Church on Saturday 14th August at 7.30pm. The programme will feature an extensive and varied programme of popular choral music including such favourites as Men of Harlech, Arwelfa and Panis Angelicus. Tickets are just £10 each - available from St Mary's Parish office 273300 or from Rebecca Hill's Gallery in the Market Square or Mary Shuttle's shop in Duke Street.

Inspired by Creation

During September the Diocese of Oxford will be hosting Inspired by Creation, an opportunity to share with others a photograph and/or a poem/prayer that captures the place where people encounter God through creation. The idea is to mark creation-tide and promote an awareness of environmental issues and how we can respond. The competition will run from 1st-30th September. We plan to make the winning photos and words available through packs of postcards and other resources. The competition is open to anyone and linked to the Earthing Faith website
www.earthingfaith.org. Register now and then use the summer to take a photograph or write a poem/prayer that is inspired by the place where you encounter God through creation. In September you will get a reminder to come back to the Earthing Faith website, when you will be able to enter your photograph and/or words into the competition.

Double edition of the pew sheet (August 1st/8th)
