Sunday 27th July 2014
Sixth Sunday after Trinity

Jesus said to his disciples, “The kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 10:7). As we come before God in praise and worship, we pray for purity of heart and clarity of vision, so we will be enabled to live in his kingdom.

10.00 am          Parish Eucharist
Hymns: 474, 225 & 352
Psalm: 119:129-136
Communion: 196, 245, 924

Anthem: Drop, drop, slow tears, O. Gibbons
First Reading        1 Kings 3 v 5-12
The Lord appears to Solomon in a dream, and asks what he should give the king. Solomon asks for discernment and an understanding mind, that he may rule the people justly and wisely.

Second Reading        Romans 8 v 26-39
Paul assures his readers that God works for good in all that happens, and that the Spirit is a constant presence to aid them in their weakness. Ultimately, there is nothing that can separate the believers from the love of God in Jesus Christ.

Gospel        Matthew 13 v 24-30 & 36-43
Using an intensive cascade of short parables, Jesus attempts to convey to his disciples something of the elusive, exhilarating reality of the kingdom of heaven.

6.00 pm            Lighthouse Commissioning Service (see notices)

Prayer for the Week
God of eternal wisdom, you alone impart the gift of right judgement. Grant us an understanding heart that may value wisely the treasure of your kingdom and gladly forgo all lesser gifts to possess that kingdom’s incomparable joy. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked in the coming weeks for:

  • All those who lost their lives in either the Malaysia Airlines disaster or the Air Algerie plane crash; for comfort and strength for all who loved them.
  • Peace in all the troubled areas of the world and especially for an end to the loss of life in Israel and the Gaza Strip:
  • Those attending or helping out at Lighthouse this week
  • Those who teach and train users of new technologies, for local adult education classes.
  • The vulnerable, elderly and infirm: Age Concern. ‘Open door’
  • Wellington Avenue & Well Lane (MR) Little Orchard Close (L), Little Park (PR)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Alastair, Matt Elworthy, Uncle Frank, Katy, Albert and Georgina Cole, Susan Parkin.
  • The recently departed: Sylvia Hall
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time: Margaret Ashby

Please remember the charities that the parish supports:
Rope (Relief for Oppressed People Everywhere), combating oppressive poverty across the world and striving to change the lives of the poor.

Stonework repairs to St. Dunstan’s completed
Good progress has been be made on the masonry repairs. The work has finished a week ahead of schedule and is more or less within budget. Morning Prayer and the Thursday Communion service will be held in the church again and the church is open to visitors. Thank you for your patience and understanding whilst the work has been undertaken and to Keith Gibbons who has overseen the project. Pictures of the works that were necessary will be on display in the porch so that you can ‘spot the difference’.  The works are still to be signed off by the architect so there may still be one or two minor pieces of maintenance to be carried out. James

Representative for Lighthouse for St. Dunstan’s needed
This involves: - attending committee meetings, ensuring your church's flyers etc. are distributed, helping to recruit volunteers, supporting fundraising events mainly through promoting them in church, if possible volunteering in some aspect during the week, supporting and promoting Lighthouse prayer meetings. This is an important role so that St Dunstan’s can support fully the excellent work of the Lighthouse Christian Holiday Week for children. If you would like more information please speak with James.

Further works completed and anticipated

The outside of the church hall has now been redecorated so that it looks like new! The inside has also been touched up to refresh its appearance. By the end of the month it is hoped that work will have started to create the path into the churchyard extension followed by the final levelling and seeding of this area as wild meadow that will slowly be brought in to use as a burial site.
