Sunday 9th June 2019

Pentecost

Gather together, children of God. Let us draw closer to Jesus our Saviour, mindful of his example and alert to the promptings of the Spirit within us.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Genesis 11.1-9
In a stark mirror image of the Pentecost story, God’s people already speak one language, giving them power which leads to corruption; we are reminded never to oppose God’s plan.

Second Reading: Acts 2.1-21
The Holy Spirit comes to each and every one of us, regardless of background, and offers to dwell within us.

Gospel: Luke 24.36b-49
Jesus tells his disciples about what is written about him and how he will send the Holy Spirit. It is God’s way of being intimately present with us even today.

Hymns: 114, 118, 636, 163.
Communion: 941, 289, 288.
Anthem: O Lord, give thy Holy Spirit (T. Tallis)

11.30am Owlswick Holy Communion
Readings
: Acts 2.1-21, John 14.8-17 & 25-27

6.00pm Evensong
Readings:
Exodus 33.7-20, 2 Corinthians 3.4-end.
Hymns: 288, 541, 84; Psalm: 33.1-12.

Prayer of the week:
Send down, O God, upon your people the flame of your Holy Spirit, and fill with the abundance of your sevenfold gift the church you brought forth from your Son’s pierced side. May your life-giving Spirit lend fire to our words and strength to our witnesses. Send us forth to the nations of the world to proclaim with boldness your wondrous work of raising Christ to your right hand. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

Each meeting lasts about 45 minutes. The meeting starts with some simple relaxation exercises, a short passage from the Bible to reflect upon in the half hour of silence, followed by a time of sharing of our experiences if people wish. Did you know?
At last year’s annual meeting a number of questions were asked about the Christian Faith/Anglican Church. These included why different colours were used for the altar cloths throughout the year, the Reformation, other faiths and what is a gradual hymn. I came across a very useful website http://www.stmarysrickmansworth.org.uk/4_we_believe/did_you_know.html that contained the answers/further information about these questions as well as a whole host of other information. Please do log onto this website to find out more and if you do not have access to the internet please do write down your question and pass it to me instead. James

More helpers required for the events team
At St. Dunstan’s we enjoy a wide variety of successful concerts and other events that are organised by members of the events team. We meet about six times a year and share out the responsibility for making events happen. It is a fun team to be a part of so please do think if you might be able to support St. Dunstan’s in this way by becoming a member of the team. Please chat with me (without any obligation to join) if you’re interested in helping out. James

Stewardship Initiative
Thank you to everyone who has so far responded to the congregational mailing. Your generosity and kindness is very much appreciated. James
