Readings
First Reading Isaiah 49:1-7
We hear the words of the “servant of the Lord”, who is called by God and named while he is still in his mother’s womb. This servant may be one person or the whole people of Israel, but the calling remains the same: to be “a light to the nations”, drawing all peoples to worship the Lord.

Second Reading 1 Corinthians 1:1-9
Paul gives thanks for the way the people in Corinth have been enriched by God and called into fellowship with all who acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord.

Gospel John 1:29-42
John fulfils his calling by declaring Jesus to be the Son of God and we see the beginning of the community Jesus builds around him at the start of his ministry.
6.00 pm Choral Evensong
Hymns: 314, Psalm 96, 689, 537
Readings: Ezekiel 2:1 to 3:4, Galatians 1:11-end
Anthem: ‘The Lord bless you and keep you’

Prayer for the week
Merciful God, you sent your Son, the spotless Lamb, to take upon himself the sin of the world.
Make our lives holy, that your Church may bear witness to your purpose of reconciling all things in Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen

Your prayers are asked this week for:
 Christians in Egypt, Iraq and Iran facing persecution and attack
 those suffering as a result of the floods and mudslides in Brazil
 those who have lost homes and possessions as a result of the floods in Australia
 the people of Tunisia, in the wake of the violence and unrest in that country
 those working in divorce law practices, for the difficult and unsettling work they do on behalf of their clients.
 those who work in the furniture industry, Ercol and Hypnos.
 residents of Mead Acre and Mead Close (Monks Risborough), Claydons Place (Longwick) and Clifford Road (Princes Risborough).
 Those in need who are known in our parish:
◦ Joan Ballance, Trevor Calvert, Joan Pitcher, Enid Menzies, Molly Whyte, Marjorie Browne, Jean Taylor, Shelagh Bartlett, Frank Jackson, Chris Broadmeadow, Elizabeth McGown
 and also further afield for:
◦ Gordon Haynes, Hilary Edridge, Christine, Deborah Ryley, Millie Adey, Emma and Olivia

Did you miss Emma Knight’s excellent talk in September about her wonderful trip to Zambia last summer? Well, Emma has kindly agreed to give her illustrated talk again: at 3pm on Sunday 30th January 2011 in the Chapter House. Emma (from St. Mary’s Princes Risborough) spent a month in Zambia, as part of a World challenge trip to a third world country, including work on a community project, and some travel. She had to finance the whole trip herself, and many church friends generously sponsored her, so now she can show her supporters what she actually did. All are very welcome. If you would like to come, please call Michael Hoey on 275192.

Deanery vacancies
There are currently vacancies for the positions of Deanery Treasurer and Deanery Quinquennial Secretary. If anyone is interested in finding out more about these roles (which can be combined), please speak with James.
