Sunday 22nd January 2012

3rd Sunday of Epiphany

10.00 am Parish Eucharist
   (Addington Setting)

Come to the Feast!  God calls everyone to a new life and a new way of living.  Come to the feast!  God calls each of us to union with him and love for each other.  Come to the feast!.

Hymns
Introit: 580
Psalm: 128
Offertory: 626,
Communion: ‘Agnus Dei’, 540, 937,
‘O little one sweet’, J.S. Bach
Recessional: 642

First Reading               Genesis 14:17-20
Having proved his military effectiveness in a region controlled by powerful tribal warriors Abram is met by Melchizedek, king and priest of peace.  Recognising the moment of powerful mystery, Abram offers worship.

Second Reading           Revelation 19: 6-10
Through the medium of dream-like vision the Spirit reveals ultimate truth with breaking clarity.  It is here that God has made peace with us through Jesus and seeks complete union.

Gospel Reading            John 2: 1–11
Set in historical reality, the wedding at Cana is bursting with strange details.  A seemingly “innocent” miracle reveals Jesus as the ultimate joy-bringer, through words laden with a mystery far heavier than those who speak them can imagine.

3.00pm   Evensong, Owlswick

Readings: Isaiah 60: 9-end, Hebrews 6:17 – 7:10
Hymns: 484, Psalm 145:1-7, 376, 360, 366

6.00pm Service to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity at St. Mary’s Princes Risborough

Prayer for the week

Your sovereign rule, O God, draws near to us in the person of Jesus your Son.  Your word summons us to faith; your power transforms our lives.  Free us to follow in Christ’s footsteps, so that neither human loyalty nor earthly attachment may hold us back from answering your call. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • The various churches and denominations that make up the ‘Churches Together’ movement in the week of prayer for Christian Unity
  • The National Health Service, all of its staff and patients at this time of reform
  • Researchers into all new forms of power, especially within our universities.
  • Peace and stability in places like Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Residents of Pilgrims Close and Little Ham Lane (MR) and Greenway cottages and Grovers Court (PR)
  • Those in need who are known in our parish:
  • and also further afield for:
    • Gordon Haynes; Christine; Joan Male; Richard Irvine; Emma, Matt and Olivia; Sarah and Matt; Sally Maddox, Sylvia Jackson
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time particularly:
    •  Edward Ginno, Marion Reece

Please remember the charities that St Dunstan's supports, in particular this week:

Cruse Bereavement Care, supporting bereaved people and enabling anyone bereaved by death to understand their grief and cope with their loss.  The organisation provides support and offers information, advice, education and training services.

Could you represent St Dunstan’s on the Lighthouse Committee?

The committee meets once a month from 8-10pm.  It comprises members of each of the churches in Risborough as well as representatives from the sub groups that make Lighthouse tick; craft, main stage, finance, fund raising etc. Your role would be to ensure that St Dunstan’s has a voice in the running of Lighthouse and to drum up support in our own church community for volunteers and fund raising initiatives. You don’t necessarily have to help during the actual Lighthouse week or even have young children yourself, but be enthusiastic for the concept!  If you would like to know more please contact Cathy Farquhar 343226 or James.

Silent Prayer Meeting, January 23rd, 8pm

“Silence is not as simple as absence of noise it is the creation of a space where God can be”. Please come along to a meeting in the church hall to encourage us to be still in the presence of God and in the company of others. James

A ‘Pilgrim Tour’ of Westminster Abbey, Wednesday March 21st

I have managed to make special arrangements for a prayer pilgrimage at Westminster Abbey on Wednesday March 21st. We will meet in the ‘lay-by’ in Monks Risborough at 3.45 pm to travel up to London by coach to arrive at the Abbey after it has closed to the general public. We will join a Canon Steward for a ‘pilgrim tour’ which will take us around the Abbey hearing about its history and praying in its sacred places. The tour will begin at 6.15pm ending with Compline at 7.15pm. We hope to return to Monks Risborough at about 9 pm. The cost will be £12 for adults, £6 for your first child under 18 (subsequent children free). You may want to bring a ‘snack’ with you. To book a place please contact Rev James Tomkins jamestomkins@btinternet.com (01844 275944)

Congratulations – MBE!

The director of the Whitechapel Mission, Tony Miller has been made an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours. Now in his 30th year at Whitechapel, Mr Miller said the award was a “fantastic honour” and he was looking forward to a really special experience at Buckingham Palace. “I am grateful to all those who work, volunteer, support and serve the Whitechapel Mission, as they are the true deservers of this recognition,” he said.
