Sunday 16th September 2012

15th Sunday after Trinity

We are saved by the faithfulness of Christ. Let us open our hearts and minds to follow and worship him.

10.00am Parish Eucharist (Addington Setting)

Hymns: 716, 503, 752
Psalm: 116:1-8

Communion: 625, 369, 931

First Reading Isaiah 50: 4-9a

The wise teacher knows that the gift of God is for others, even those who reject the giver.

Second Reading James 3: 1-12

James has a particular caution against ill-considered words.

Gospel Reading Mark 8: 27-end

There is a time for speaking and a time for discretion. Wisdom knows the difference! The full revelation of Jesus as Messiah would not happen until after the resurrection. Even now it is a knowledge we exercise through faith. The lesson the disciples had to learn is therefore also a lesson for us.

6:00pm Choral Evensong

Readings: Exodus 18: 13-26, Matthew 7: 1-14

Hymns: 643, Psalm 119 v 73-80, 652, 655

Prayer for the Week

God of power and compassion, in Christ you reveal your will to heal and to save. Open our ears to your redeeming work and move our hearts by the strength of your love, so that our every word and work may proclaim as Messiah, Jesus the Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

 Wisdom and guidance as the Church of England continues to consider consecrating women as bishops

 An easing of tensions amongst Muslims against the United States of America in the Middle East and North Africa

 All the members of the Royal Family in encouraging, promoting and extending the hand of friendship in other nations.

 Solicitors, accountants and other professional people.

 Residents of: Williams Way (L), Wainhill (B)

 Those in need who are known in our parish:

 and also further afield for:

Gordon Haynes, Joan and Bill Male, Richard Irvine, Alastair

 The recently departed: Grahame White

 Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time particularly:

Daisy Crockett, Tom Rogers, Ron Stiff.

Please remember the charities that St Dunstan's supports, in particular this week:
The Church Housing Trust Dedicated to the rehabilitation and resettlement of homeless people of all ages and backgrounds

Fete – Thank You

Massive thanks to everyone who helped with the Fete which raised over £1,500. Well done!

Small group BIG QUESTIONS

Taking place each Friday and running weekly up to October 12th, EVERYONE is welcome to come along to The Rectory at the top of Mill Lane, Monks Risborough from 10.00 to 11.30 to explore questions of faith and other aspects of Christianity. Come with your doubts, your hopes and your questions. As part of an informal group we aim to answer those questions that we all struggle with from time to time. Each week will start with some refreshments followed by a DVD to stimulate discussion and a time for people to listen, ask questions and share their thoughts. Topics will include ‘Does God heal today’ and ‘what about the Church’. James

The Whitechapel Mission – Harvest Collection

As in previous years we are delighted to accept your donations for the work of the Whitechapel Mission at or before our Harvest services. These take place on Sunday September 23rd at 6 pm at Owlswick Chapel and on Sunday October 7th at 11 am at St. Dunstan’s. The Whitechapel Mission provides hot food and drink, showers, clothing, free toilets and the chance of a wash and brush-up to homeless people in London. To enable its work to continue please log on to their website www.whitechapelmission.org.uk, click on ‘donate’ and scroll down to ‘donations in kind’ for a list of the things most desperately needed. A list of urgently required items can also be found on the notice board in the porch. Thank you in anticipation of your help. James

“Open House at the Rectory” Wed Sept 19th at 8 pm

This informal group proves a space to encourage people in their faith through friendship and looking at topical issues. A short DVD is shown at the beginning of the evening to start the discussions off. No need to book, please just turn up or contact James for further details.

The Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning Fri 28th Sept 10-12

Do come and join us at The Nags Head House, Aylesbury Road, Monks Risborough in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. June Timms.

Stewardship Initiative

Despite the generosity of individuals in giving their time and money for the work of the church, and the holding of successful fund raising events such as the fete, the church is currently running at a loss. For example it costs about £200 per day to run St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s and in 2013 it is expected that at least an extra £20,000 will be required to repair the fabric of St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s and to extend the churchyard. At the end of the month a letter will go out explaining the situation in more detail and how you can help. Can I stress that there is no need to panic, but that we do need think carefully about the giving of our time, money and skills to ensure that we sustain the vibrant Christian community that exists in the parish. James

Harvest Festival Lunch, October 7th

Following the 11 am Harvest Festival, at St Dunstan’s a Harvest lunch will be held in the Scout Hut in Courtmoor Close. Tickets are adults £5.00, first child (5 - 12 years) in a family £2.00, other children free, available from Rosemary Woodward-Court 01844 344417. If you are able to provide a pudding or help set up for this special occasion please sign the list in the porch.

Monks Monkeys – Piano/Keyboard Player required

Monks Monkeys meets each Thursday in the church hall during term time from 2.00 to 3.00pm for pre-school age children and their parents/carers. As part of this toddler group we sing a few songs and we have been very fortunate to have Sarah Fairall playing for us for the past 3 ½ years. Whilst we can use CDs to sing songs it would be great to have ‘live’ music. We sing a mixture of Christian songs and nursery rhymes e.g. ‘My God is so big’ and ‘the wheels of the bus go round and round!’ If you are interested in helping out (or know of anyone who might) please let James know.
