16th Sunday after Trinity

The disciples were unwilling to receive the message of Jesus.  We pray that in the Eucharist we may be open to his work and rejoice in his presence among us.

First Reading                Jeremiah 11: 18-20
The prophet thanks God for showing him the evil deeds of wicked people and prays for God’s retribution upon them as a reward for his own faithfulness.   

Second Reading           James 3:13 – 4:3 & 4:7-8a
The writer encourages Christians to lead a good life, free from self-seeking and the temptation to become involved in disputes.  “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.“

Gospel Reading             Mark 9: 30-.37
Jesus seeks respite in order to teach his disciples.  They are taken up with their own concerns and do not respond.  He takes a child in his arms to demonstrate the qualities the disciples need.

Prayer for the Week

O God, protector of the poor and defender of the just, in your kingdom the last become first, the gentle are strong, and the lowly exalted. Give us wisdom from above, that we may find in your servant Jesus the pattern of true discipleship and the grace to persevere in following him, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.  Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

• all those who work to protect us and keep our law and order, in particular the police and the armed forces
• the Middle East; that different religions can live peaceably together in tolerance and co-operation, without violence and bloodshed
• Those who work at home caring for elderly relatives or young children.

Fete and Concert – Thank You

Massive thanks to everyone who helped with the Fete which raised over £1,500 and who helped to put on a brilliant concert. Well done!

Small group BIG QUESTIONS

Taking place each Friday and running weekly up to October 12th, EVERYONE is welcome to come along to The Rectory at the top of Mill Lane, Monks Risborough from 10.00 to 11.30 to explore questions of faith and other aspects of Christianity. Come with your doubts, your hopes and your questions. As part of an informal group we aim to answer those questions that we all struggle with from time to time. Each week will start with some refreshments followed by a DVD to stimulate discussion and a time for people to listen, ask questions and share their thoughts. Topics will include ‘Does God heal today’ and ‘what about the Church’. James

The Whitechapel Mission – Harvest Collection
 As in previous years we are delighted to accept your donations for the work of the Whitechapel Mission at or before our Harvest services. These take place on Sunday September 23rd at 6 pm at Owlswick Chapel and on Sunday October 7th at 11 am at St. Dunstan’s. The Whitechapel Mission provides hot food and drink, showers, clothing, free toilets and the chance of a wash and brush-up to homeless people in London. To enable its work to continue please log on to their website www.whitechapelmission.org.uk, click on ‘donate’ and scroll down to ‘donations in kind’ for a list of the things most desperately needed. Stewardship Initiative
Despite the generosity of individuals in giving their time and money for the work of the church, and the holding of successful fund raising events such as the fete, the church is currently running at a loss. For example it costs about £200 per day to run St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s and in 2013 it is expected that at least an extra £20,000 will be required to repair the fabric of St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s and to extend the churchyard. At the end of the month a letter will go out explaining the situation in more detail and how you can help. Can I stress that there is no need to panic, but that we do need think carefully about the giving of our time, money and skills to ensure that we sustain the vibrant Christian community that exists in the parish. Harvest Festival Lunch, October 7th
Following the 11 am Harvest Festival, at St Dunstan’s a Harvest lunch will be held in the Scout Hut in Courtmoor Close. Tickets are adults £5.00, first child (5 - 12 years) in a family £2.00, other children free, available from Rosemary Woodward-Court 01844 344417. If you are able to provide a pudding or help set up for this special occasion please sign the list in the porch.

Monks Monkeys – Piano/Keyboard Player required
Monks Monkeys meets each Thursday in the church hall during term time from 2.00 to 3.00pm for pre-school age children and their parents/carers. Whilst we can use CDs to sing songs it would be great to have ‘live’ music. We sing a mixture of Christian songs and nursery rhymes e.g. ‘My God is so big’ and ‘the wheels of the bus go round and round!’ If you are interested in helping out (or know of anyone who might) please let James know.

St. Dunstan’s Fellowship
All meetings start at 8.00pm in the Church Hall on the 2nd Thursday of the month unless otherwise stated. Husbands and friends are very welcome to these meetings. “Knit-ins” take place in the church hall on the 4th Thursday of each month starting at 2.00 pm. There is also a series of short walks that take place on the 4th Tuesday of each month starting in the lay-by at 9.15am. For more details please speak with Janet Griffin (274235)
