Sunday 30th September 2012

17th Sunday after Trinity

We gather in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to worship him and to build one another up in faith.

10.00am   Parish Eucharist         (Addington Setting)

Hymns: 58 (verses 5-8), 144, 281
Psalm: 19:7- end
Communion: 484, 738, 457

First Reading                Numbers 11: 4-6, 10-16, 24-29
Moses tires of the burden of leading the whining, complaining, ungrateful people; so God allows Moses to choose elders to help to share the responsibility.

Second Reading           James 5:13 - end
James urges Christians to exercise their faith actively by praying in every situation, whether alone or with and for others.  Helping fellow Christians stay faithful is precious and significant ministry.

Jesus teaches that discipleship involves welcoming all who acknowledge the power of his name, and determinedly shunning any sin that threatens their own and other’s call to God’s Kingdom.

Readings: Exodus 24; Matthew 9: 1-13
Hymns:   161, Psalm 121, 412, 638

Prayer for the Week
Pour out your spirit, O God, over all the world to inspire every heart with knowledge and love of you.  Grant that we who confess Jesus as Lord may shun whatever is contrary to this faith and give witness to your love that has saved us in Christ, for he lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.  Amen.

Small group BIG QUESTIONS
Taking place each Friday and running weekly up to October 12th, EVERYONE is welcome to come along to The Rectory at the top of Mill Lane, Monks Risborough from 10.00 to 11.30 to explore questions of faith and other aspects of Christianity. Come with your doubts, your hopes and your questions. As part of an informal group we aim to answer those questions that we all struggle with from time to time. Each week will start with some refreshments followed by a DVD to stimulate discussion and a time for people to listen, ask questions and share their thoughts. Topics will include ‘Does God heal today’ and ‘what about the Church’. James

The Whitechapel Mission – Harvest Collection
As in previous years we are delighted to accept your donations for the work of the Whitechapel Mission at or before the Harvest Service on Sunday October 7th at 11 am at St. Dunstan’s. The Whitechapel Mission provides hot food and drink, showers, clothing, free toilets and the chance of a wash and brush-up to homeless people in London. To enable its work to continue please log on to their website www.whitechapelmission.org.uk, click on ‘donate’ and scroll down to ‘donations in kind’ for a list of the things most desperately needed. A list of urgently required items can also be found on the notice board in the porch. Thank you in anticipation of your help. James

Stewardship Initiative
Despite the generosity of individuals in giving their time and money for the work of the church, and the holding of successful fund raising events such as the fete, the church is currently running at a loss. For example it costs about £200 per day to run St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s and in 2013 it is expected that at least an extra £20,000 will be required to repair the fabric of St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s and to extend the churchyard. At today’s service a letter will be handed out explaining the situation in more detail and how you can help. If for any reason you do not receive a letter please accept my apologies and take a spare one from the box on the table towards the back of the church. Can I stress that in all of this there is no need to panic, but that we do need think carefully about the giving of our time, money and skills to ensure that we sustain the vibrant Christian community that exists in the parish. James

Harvest Festival Lunch, October 7th
Following the 11 am Harvest Festival, at St Dunstan’s a Harvest lunch will be held in the Scout Hut in Courtmoor Close. Tickets are adults £5.00, first child (5 - 12 years) in a family £2.00, other children free, available from Rosemary Woodward-Court 01844 344417. If you are able to provide a pudding or help set up for this special occasion please sign the list in the porch.

Monks Monkeys – Piano/Keyboard Player required
Monks Monkeys meets each Thursday in the church hall during term time from 2.00 to 3.00pm for pre-school age children and their parents/carers. Whilst we can use CDs to sing songs it would be great to have ‘live’ music. We sing a mixture of Christian songs and nursery rhymes e.g. ‘My God is so big’ and ‘the wheels of the bus go round and round!’ If you are interested in helping out (or know of anyone who might) please let James know.

St. Dunstan’s Fellowship
All meetings start at 8.00pm in the Church Hall on the 2nd Thursday of the month unless otherwise stated. Husbands and friends are very welcome to these meetings. “Knit-ins” take place in the church hall on the 4th Thursday of each month starting at 2.00 pm. There is also a series of short walks that take place on the 4th Tuesday of each month starting in the lay-by at 9.15am. For more details please speak with Janet Griffin (274235)

The new October issue of the Door newspaper
This includes: a special start to the new school year; a Prayer Experience - report of this year's Festival of Prayer and an in depth reflection on the Jesus Prayer; London 2012: How was it for you - looking back on the Olympic and Paralympic Games; Plus - win a family Christmas activity book

Peter Woodward-Court’s trip to Ghana
In this month’s newsletter there is a summary of Peter’s fascinating and moving visit to Ghana as part of his training to be a doctor. If you would like further information about his trip together with some photographs please take one of the reports from the table near the south door.
