Sunday 7th October 2012

18th Sunday after Trinity
Harvest Festival

Our Lord Jesus Christ is crowned with glory and honour and he call us his brothers and sisters. He is with us now as we meet to praise God who created all things and who loves us beyond our understanding.

8.00am Holy Communion (BCP)
11.00am   All Age Family Service without Communion

Hymns: 719, 559, 558, 825, 900, 332
Anthem: The heavens sing praises to God

First Reading: Joel 2 21-27
Although most of this prophetic writing is of doom and ruin, the poetry also has its inspiring affirmation of God’s love, to be shown in abundant harvests that produce more than enough for all

Gospel Matthew: 6:25- 33
Jesus pronounces the natural world to be full of wonder, full of food and drink for its creatures and splendid to look at. We should praise God for his bounty, and try to set aside worries about our future.

6:00pm   Choral Evensong
Readings: Job 28: 1- 11, 2 Timothy 2: 1-7
Hymns:   184, Psalm 126, 350, 232

Prayer for the Week

Eternal God, you crown the year with your goodness and you give us the fruits of the earth in their season: grant that we may use them to your glory, for the relief of those in need and for our own well-being; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • Peace for the people of Syria and for greater stability in the Middle East
  • For all children and adults who are ‘missing’ and for those who work to find their whereabouts
  • the work being carried out by the Church, charities, governments and individuals to end poverty
  • All who package and safely contain our foodstuffs that they reach us uncontaminated.
  • The Parish Council of Bledlow, Saunderton and Bledlow Ridge.
  • Residents of: Chestnut Close (MR) Bell Land and Bell Street (PR)
  • Those in need who are known in our parish:
  • and also further afield for:
    • Gordon Haynes, Joan and Bill Male, Richard Irvine, Alastair
  • The recently departed:
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time particularly:
    • Ken Bradshaw, Ivy Davies, Joan Randall, Neil Radford

Please remember the charities that St Dunstan's supports, in particular this week:
Iain Rennie Hospice at Home Offering specialist and supportive care and advice for patients with cancer and other life threatening illnesses in their homes

The Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning – Thanks
Thank you to all those who so generously supported and donated to my coffee morning.  We raised the fantastic amount of £285.00 which I have sent off to Macmillan Cancer Support.  THANK YOU.  June Timms

Small group BIG QUESTIONS
Taking place each Friday and running weekly up to October 12th, EVERYONE is welcome to come along to The Rectory at the top of Mill Lane, Monks Risborough from 10.00 to 11.30 to explore questions of faith and other aspects of Christianity. Come with your doubts, your hopes and your questions. As part of an informal group we aim to answer those questions that we all struggle with from time to time. Each week will start with some refreshments followed by a DVD to stimulate discussion and a time for people to listen, ask questions and share their thoughts. Topics will include ‘Does God heal today’ and ‘what about the Church’. James

Stewardship Initiative
Despite the generosity of individuals in giving their time and money for the work of the church, and the holding of successful fund raising events such as the fete, the church is currently running at a loss. For example it costs about £200 per day to run St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s and in 2013 it is expected that at least an extra £20,000 will be required to repair the fabric of St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s and to extend the churchyard. A letter was handed/posted out last week explaining the situation in more detail and how you can help. If for any reason you do not receive a letter please accept my apologies and take a spare one from the box on the table towards the back of the church. Can I stress that in all of this there is no need to panic, but that we do need think carefully about the giving of our time, money and skills to ensure that we sustain the vibrant Christian community that exists in the parish. James

Monks Monkeys – Piano/Keyboard Player required
Monks Monkeys meets each Thursday in the church hall during term time from 2.00 to 3.00pm for pre-school age children and their parents/carers. Whilst we can use CDs to sing songs it would be great to have ‘live’ music. We sing a mixture of Christian songs and nursery rhymes e.g. ‘My God is so big’ and ‘the wheels of the bus go round and round!’ If you are interested in helping out (or know of anyone who might) please let James know.

St. Dunstan’s Fellowship
All meetings start at 8.00pm in the Church Hall on the 2nd Thursday of the month unless otherwise stated. Husbands and friends are very welcome to these meetings. “Knit-ins” take place in the church hall on the 4th Thursday of each month starting at 2.00 pm. There is also a series of short walks that take place on the 4th Tuesday of each month starting in the lay-by at 9.15am. For more details please speak with Janet Griffin (274235)

Peter Woodward-Court’s trip to Ghana
In this month’s newsletter there is a summary of Peter’s fascinating and moving visit to Ghana as part of his training to be a doctor. If you would like further information about his trip together with some photographs please take one of the reports from the table near the south door.

Pewsheet for October 14th/21st/28th
Please note that the next edition of the pew sheet will cover three weeks. Space may therefore be limited and notices should be submitted earlier than usual.

A message from Rev. Denise Critchell (Lacey Green)
