Sunday 17th February 2013

First Sunday of Lent

On this first Sunday of Lent, we remember the decisions Jesus made in the wilderness.  We call to mind the decisions we have made to know him, love him and serve him.  We bring them before him and renew them in his presence in this Eucharist.

10.00 am Parish Eucharist   Merbecke Setting
Hymns: 343, 503, 630
Psalm: 91: 1-12
Communion: 418, 626, 457
Anthem: Hide not thou thy face (R. Farrant)

First Reading                Deuteronomy 26: 1-11
Moses commands his people that when they come into the Promised Land they should offer the first fruits of their harvest to God as a thanksgiving for their deliverance from Egypt.

Second Reading            Romans 10: 8b-13
Paul offers salvation to all who put their faith in the crucified and risen Christ, regardless of who they are.

Gospel Reading            Matthew 4: 1-11
Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness.  After forty days of fasting, he is tested by the devil.  His decision to hold fast to God’s calling stays firm.

6:00pm   Choral Evensong
Readings: Jonah: 3, Luke 18:9-14
Hymns: 379, Psalm 119:81-88, 412, 69

Prayer for the Week
Lord our God, you alone do we worship, only your word gives life.  Sustain your Church on its Lenten journey.  When we walk through the desert of temptation strengthen us to renounce the power of evil.  When our faith is tested by doubt, illumine our hearts with Easter’s bright promise.  We ask this through Christ, our deliverance and hope who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Sunday 24th February 2013

Second Sunday of Lent

As the season of Lent deepens, we pause to reflect on our own human frailty.  So let us be still now, and know God’s presence within and around us.

Psalm: 27: 1-8

Abram has a vision in which God promises that he shall not be childless but will have many descendants.

Second Reading           Philippians 3:17 - 4:1
Paul reminds his readers about that Christ’s power is transformative, so stand firm in the Lord.

Gospel Reading            Luke 13: 31-35
When a group of Pharisees warn Jesus that Herod wants to kill him, Jesus sends a defiant reply.

Prayer for the Week
God of the covenant, your presence fills us with awe and your word gives us unshakable hope.  Fix in our hearts the image of your Son in glory that, sustained on the path of discipleship, we may pass over with him to newness of life.  We ask this through Christ, our deliverance and hope who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Belated Welcome

New Church Electoral Roll
Every six years the church electoral roll is completely revised. The electoral roll seeks to reflect church membership as closely as possible and provides a general barometer of the vibrancy of the worshipping community. Forms will need to be completed and returned by March 31st to the electoral roll officer Mr Roger Timms, Nags Head House, Aylesbury Road, Monks Risborough,  HP27 0JT. Forms are available in St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s.

New PCC and Deanery synod members required
The Church annual meetings take place on Monday April 22nd at 8.00. This is the time at which new members are elected on to the Parochial Church Council (PCC). If you are interested in becoming a member of the PCC or the Deanery Synod please speak with James to find out more.

New Pew Sheet Editor required
We need to find someone to take over the production of the pew sheet. It takes about an hour week and basic computer skills are necessary. If you are interested in taking on this important role please speak to Susanne Dodds or James

Lent:
The Bethany House Group is offering the latest York Course for Lent:  ‘Glimpses of God – Hope for Today’s World’. The five weekly sessions start on 20th February, at 76 Westmead from 10.30 – noon. Please ring either Su Viney on 275461 or Jill Iredale on 346488 for further details.

Church Together in Risborough is organising an evening course for anyone to come along to called ‘Serving the Community’. This takes place from 7.00 – 9.00pmon Tuesday evenings at Costa Coffee, Princes Risborough.. Further details can be found on the outside notice board.

Dorchester Abbey
The theme of the Tree of Life is explored by the artist Caroline Meynell in a series of thirteen paintings. The exhibition provides a contemplative space within the Abbey during Lent, and is the focal point of a series of Sunday evening talks. For further details please see the notice board.

Grass Cutting
Summer may seem a long way off but we need to find additional people to help cut the grass in the churchyard. There are various plot sizes that people can volunteer for. It is a very rewarding role and many comments are received about how lovely the churchyard looks. If you have a few hours to spare every other week during the growing season please speak with James.

Confirmation
Confirmation is traditionally seen as an entry point to receive Holy Communion and/or point in which a person wishes to affirm their faith publicly. There are various services locally at which this can take place and a number of people have expressed an interest. If you and/or your child are interested in being confirmed please speak with James
