 Sunday 19th January 2013

Second Sunday of Epiphany

God says “it is not enough!” until Jesus Christ has been revealed as saviour for all the earth. Let us join together to rejoice in his coming and to proclaim aloud his glory.

10.00 am      Parish Eucharist
Hymns: 120, 221, 756
Psalm: 40 v1-13
Communion: 930, 374, 937

First Reading      Isaiah 49 v 1-7
The identity of the servant in Isaiah's mind is a great mystery, but the message is clear: at the very time when God's people thought exile had become their shameful end, God reveals a plan far beyond their imagination.

Second Reading      1 Corinthians 1 v 1-9
Paul's vision of the Church was huge: "all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." In this phrase we have the universal and the particular: There is no boundary but that of confessing the name of Christ.

Gospel      John 1 v 29-42
John's picture is astonishing: a solitary prophet points to another man who single-handedly will take away the sin of the whole world. John didn't even know how big the world was – yet he knew Christ was bigger!

3.00pm Service of Christian Unity
Speaker: Phil Evans, Christian Aid Regional Coordinator

Theme: Transforming women’s lives in Afghanistan

6.00 pm      Choral Evensong
Readings: Ezekiel 2 v 1 – Ch. 3 v 4, Galatians 1 v 11-end
Hymns: 347, 314, 188
Psalm: 96 v1-9

Prayer for the Week
Merciful God, you sent your Son, the spotless Lamb, to take upon himself the sin of the world. Make our lives holy, that your Church may bear witness to your purpose of reconciling all things in Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen

Your prayers are asked in the coming weeks for:

  • Cooperation in mission, outreach and witness as Churches Together in Risborough
  • The troubled places of the world: for the people of Syria, the Central African Republic, South Sudan and Afghanistan
  • The PCC as it considers the church’s finances for 2014.
  • Those who continue to be affected by flooding and heavy rainfall.
  • For those who live Old Manor Close & Orchard Place (MR) Elm Road & Elmdale Gardens (PR)
  • in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Richard Irvine, Alastair, David Holding, Matt Elworthy, Uncle Frank
  • The recently departed:
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time: Bill Ballance

Please remember the charities that the parish supports:
Parents and Children Together (PACT), working to build and strengthen families in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and across the UK and internationally
