Sunday 25th January, 2015
The Conversion of Paul

In our worship today let us prepare to talk to God, and commit to listen to what God is saying to us.

10.00am Parish Eucharist

Hymns: 756, 337, 281
Psalms: 67
Communion: 738, 625, 930
Anthem: Be still for the presence of the Lord

First Reading
Jeremiah 1:4-10
When Jeremiah protests that he is only a boy, the Lord gently chastises him, assuring him of his destiny as a great ruler.

Second Reading Acts 9:1-22
We hear the story of Saul’s dramatic encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus and how, afterwards, he is led to a room where he spends three days, unable to eat or drink. God reassures Ananias that he has a plan for Saul. Ananias visits Saul, whose sight is restored.

Gospel Matthew 19:27-30
Peter wants to know what the disciples’ reward will be for discipleship, and Jesus responds by assuring him of their place in glory alongside him. He says that everyone who has made a sacrifice in his name will inherit eternal life.

3.00pm Owlswick Evensong
Readings: Isaiah 56 v 1-8, Colossians 1 v 24 - Ch 2 v 7
Hymns: 333, Psalm 119 v49-56, 359, 379, 486

 Prayer for the Week
Almighty God, who caused the light of the gospel to shine throughout the world through the preaching of your servant Saint Paul: grant that we who celebrate his wonderful conversion may follow him in bearing witness to your truth;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked in the coming week for:

  • Those parts of the world where there is conflict and violence; especially for Syria and Ukraine, for Niger and South Sudan: that the leaders of the nations may be led in the ways of peace, justice and reconciliation.
  • All those who work in our hospitals; for doctors, nurses, health workers and support staff: that they may be given the resources that they need.
  • Those who struggle to cope with the winter weather; especially those who are homeless and those who cannot afford to heat their homes: that they may be enabled to keep safe and warm.
  • Churches Together in Risborough, Britain and Ireland, at the end of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
  • The responsible use of nuclear power and the opportunities for reliable safe energy
  • St Teresa’s RC School, its pupils, staff, head and governors
  • Stockwell Lane & Stopps Orchard (MR) Inn keepers Court & Ivy Close (L)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Alastair, Uncle Frank, Katy, Albert and Georgina Cole, Gillian Brady, Michael Forster
  • The recently departed: Matt Elworthy
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Edward Ginno, Marion Reece, Oscar Tahmasebi, Robert Millican, Ruth Rider, Tom Randall, Hugh Greig

Please remember the charities that the parish supports:
Christian Aid www.christianaid.org.uk works to bring an end to poverty around the world and to tackle the causes of injustice.

Notices

Colds, coughs…
Polite reminder – so that we all stay as healthy as possible, if you have a cold etc. please ask the priest to dip your wafer into the communion cup (known as intinction) to reduce the risk of spreading germs. James

If you like a job which you can do sitting down, please read on…
If you would like to help occasionally with the placing of microphones and operation of the church's sound system during services, either Susanne or Charlie would be delighted to show you how everything works and offer any guidance you might need. It's really quite straightforward and very rewarding, with no previous knowledge or experience required.

Lent Courses for 2015

Two courses are on offer this year. The first course is on the Apocrypha, the set of books that sits between the Old and New Testament in some Bibles.  This is a rare opportunity to look at the Apocrypha, which is often shrouded in mystery, under Rob’s experienced guidance.
There is the choice of four sessions on Wednesday mornings, from 10.30 – 12 noon, starting on 4th March at 76 Westmead, Monks Risborough or a one day workshop in the church hall on  Saturday 28th February from 10.00am—4.00pm. Drinks will be provided at the latter but please bring your own packed lunch.
There is a leaflet on the table giving further information. Please complete and return the tear off slip for this by Sunday February 15th to Rob or James.

The second course is based on ‘Spiritual Journeys’. This is being organised by Churches Together in Risborough and takes place on Tuesday evenings at Costa Coffee in Princes Risborough from 7.30 – 9.30 pm on the following dates with the following speakers: 03 March: Anne Harding and Celia Sparkes - Walking the route to Santiago in N Spain. 10 March: Ken and June Brazier- Mercy ships and our journey to Sierra Leone. 17 March: Rev Jim Taylor - A journey to Manila in the Philippines. 24 March: Esther Lever - An adventurous journey with God. Each evening ‘stands alone’ so you do not need to sign up to every session. James.

The Future Possible Expansion of Princes/Monks Risborough – 28 January 2015

Network Rail will also be engaging with the public on railway crossings of the Risborough – Aylesbury line on the same day and in the same place: Network Rail exhibition: 4.30 – 7.30 p.m. at St Mary’s Church Hall, Princes Risborough. There is no need to register for these events though if the hall for the evening meeting does become crowded it may be necessary to turn latecomers away. Just a reminder that you can read a background study of the town and an Issues and Responses report under the Princes Risborough page of our website here: http://www.wycombe.gov.uk/council-services/planning-and-buildings/planning-policy/new-local-plan/princes-risborough.aspx

Silent Prayer Meeting, Monday February 2nd at 8pm:
We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. All are welcome to these meetings of any faith or none. The meeting starts in the church hall with some simple relaxation exercises, a short passage from the Bible to reflect upon in the half hour of silence, followed by a time of sharing of our experiences if people wish. For further information please contact James.
