Sunday 17th May 2015

Seventh Sunday of Easter and Patronal Festival

Bible Reading   Acts 1:15-17. 21-26
The disciples are waiting in the city for “the promise of the Father”. While they wait they choose Matthias to take the place of Judas.

Prayer for the week
Almighty God, who raised up Dunstan to be a true shepherd of your flock, a restorer of monastic life and a faithful counsellor to those in authority: give to all in positions of leadership the same gifts of your Holy Spirit, that they may be true servants of Jesus and of all his people, both now and for ever. Amen.

Silent Prayer Meeting, Monday June 1st at 8pm:
We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. All are welcome to these meetings of any faith or none. The meeting starts in the church hall with some simple relaxation exercises, a short passage from the Bible to reflect upon in the half hour of silence, followed by a time of sharing of our experiences if people wish. For further information please contact James.

Book your place – Westminster Abbey
On Wednesday July 15th we will meet in the ‘lay-by’ in Monks Risborough at 3:30 pm to travel up to London by coach to arrive at the Abbey as it closes to the general public. There should be time before the tour starts at 6 pm to wander around the west end of the Abbey and to make use of the toilets. The ‘pilgrim’s tour’ will take us around the Abbey hearing about its history and praying in its sacred places that are not always open to the public. The usual price for a group tour is £17 per person but these special arrangements enable us to charge just £15 per person (children £7.50) including the cost of the coach. We hope to return to Monks Risborough at about 9:00 pm and you may want to bring a ‘snack’ with you. To book a place please contact James and send your money with cheques payable to ‘Monks Risborough PCC’ to the Rectory, Mill Lane, Monks Risborough, HP27 9JE.

Book your place - A Day Trip to Canterbury
This years’ visit to a cathedral city will be on Wednesday August 5th to Canterbury. Canterbury is an historic city which is very easy to explore on foot. There is a guided tour of the magnificent cathedral included as part of the price of the trip, as well as the opportunity to enjoy Choral Evensong at 5.30 pm. During the afternoon you may wish to visit other historic sites in the city, take a punt or boat trip down the River Stour, go on a guided walking tour or just relax in one of the numerous cafes or eating places that Canterbury offers. The coach will leave the lay-by in Monks Risborough at 8:30 am and return there at approximately 9.00 pm. Please bring a picnic lunch and tea or enjoy the refreshments within the city. The cost of the trip is £30 (children £15) with cheques payable to Monks Risborough PCC. Everyone along with their family and friends is welcome. If you are interested in coming please contact James and send your money with cheques payable to ‘Monks Risborough PCC’ to the Rectory, Mill Lane, Monks Risborough, HP27 9JE

Help required to put on church events
More help is required to distribute posters, assist with the BBQ, sell tickets etc. as part of the team of people that run the wide variety of activities/events at St. Dunstan’s. If you think you can lend a hand on a regular or occasional basis please can you let James know.

Ideas for the South Aisle
You’ll notice that the altar has been removed from the south aisle underneath the St. Cecilia window. This has created some more space and highlighted the two lovely brasses there. The space will be used by Bucks Open Studios in June and also by musicians when we have concerts. It may be appropriate to install a servery there provided it is sympathetic to the rest of the church and doesn’t take up much space. It may be best to leave the space empty which will give greater flexibility for hosting events and special services, or you may have some ideas yourself. Any thoughts gratefully received. James

New Musical Setting for St. Dunstan’s
Starting on June 14th we will be using the Trinity Mass Setting composed by David Thorne for the Parish Eucharist. It is widely used across the Oxford Diocese, is relatively easy to learn, and has great joy and musical depth. Parts of the mass setting have already been sung at the Nine Lessons and Carols Service as well as during Communion at the Parish Eucharist. We will have a ‘rehearsal’ for those can come at 9.40 am on Sunday June 14th. For those who have internet access the setting can be listened to on http://www.culvermusic.com/trinity-mass.html James
