Welcome!

We hope you will enjoy worshipping here with us.
Please see our welcome leaflet on the table for all of our services and activities.

During the summer holidays the 10 o’clock club for children is taking a break but babies and children are most welcome to make use of the toys and the colouring sheets in the children’s corner at St. Dunstan’s during the service.

Sunday 16th August 2015

Eleventh Sunday after Trinity

Our God calls us to leave our foolish ways and to seek his path of wisdom and light. Let us worship him with open and trusting hearts.

10.00am Parish Eucharist

Hymns: 382, 658, 552, 70
Communion: 304, 168, 978

First Readings 1 Kings 2:10-12. 3:3-14
David has died and his son Solomon reigns in his stead. God asks Solomon what gift he would like, and is pleased with Solomon’s request for wisdom, rather than earthly blessings.

Second Reading Ephesians 5:15-20
The Ephesians are urged to live wisely, understanding what the will of the Lord is, and giving thanks to God for everything in the name of Christ.

Gospel John 6:51-58
Jesus declares himself to be the living bread from heaven, which gives life to the world. Unlike the bread which God gave in the wilderness, whose effects were only temporary, this living bread gives those who eat it eternal life.

6.00pm Evensong

Readings: Exodus 2 v 23- ch 3 v 10, Hebrews 13 v 1-15
Hymns: 367, Psalm 100, 297, 497

Prayer for the week
Wise and gracious God, you spread a table before us and nourish your people with the word of life and the bread from heaven. In our sharing of these holy gifts, show us our unity in you and give us a taste of the life to come. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked in the coming weeks for:

  • All those killed or injured in the explosion in China, and for the work of the emergency services and authorities in alleviating their suffering.
  • Young people who have received their A-level results this week: for those able to move on to the next stage of their education or training, and for those who may need to find alternative routes to those they had planned.
  • Solicitors, accountants and other professional people.
  • Williams Way (L) Wainhill (B)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Alastair, Uncle Frank, Katy, Georgina Cole, Jane, Dave Skinner
  • The recently departed: Peg Norris
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Brian Pechey, Ruth Bartlett, Stanley Baldwin, Ted Light, Terry Badrick

Please remember the charities that the parish supports:

Bucks County Show Hospitality Tent and Cakes
Once again many of the local churches are getting together to offer hospitality to those who come to this show held at Weedon Park (north of Aylesbury on the A413) on Thursday August 27th. The hospitality tent provides a space to rest (a while), with a free cup of coffee or tea and cake and also children’s craft activities.  Last year around 1,000 drinks were served and 100 cakes eaten! Mick and Anne White (346536) are co-ordinating the help from this parish. If you can donate a cake or help on the day please let them know. The cakes should not contain cream or buttercream as these are difficult to transport but these are the only exceptions!

Confirmation Sessions and Service
A confirmation class for adults and children is being held at the Rectory on Saturday October 17th and Saturday October 24th from 2.30-4.30pm. The Confirmation service itself will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Bledlow on Sunday November 1st at 6pm. If you would like to consider being confirmed please contact James. Confirmation is often seen as the entry point to receive Holy Communion as a person ‘confirms’ the promises made on their behalf at their Baptism.

Reform and Renewal – the significance of St. Dunstan
A fascinating one day course is being offered by the department of continuing education at Oxford University on Saturday October 24th. The course fee is £65 (50% of this can be subsidised). Further details are available in the porch, www.conted.ox.ac.uk, emailing ppdayweek@conted.ox.ac.uk or phoning 01865 270368

New Musical Setting for St. Dunstan’s
We have begun using the Trinity Setting composed by David Thorne for the Parish Eucharist. For those who have internet access the setting can be listened to on http://www.culvermusic.com/trinity-mass.html. There are copies of the music available for those who would like to have one. Everyone is also invited to come along to the first part of choir practice on Thursday September 10th at 6.30 to become more familiar with the setting. James

Prayer Diary and Welcome Cards available
Prayer is fundamental to the health and development of all churches. If you would like to take a laminated prayer card from the table and spend a few moments each day praying for different aspects of church/chapel life you would be most welcome. You’ll also find welcome cards in the pews as well as on the table and you are encouraged to pass this on to anyone moving in to the parish. James

Volunteers required to create a church trail for young people
Working together with an advisor I need a team of four adults to help put together a trail for young people (aged about 8-12) to follow with their parent(s) inside the church. If you are interested in finding out more please speak with James – no experience of the church’s history is required!

Bucks Arts Week Commission

You will be pleased to know that the total commission from the displays in June amounted to just over £2,000. Together with the cream teas the total amount raised during this nine day period was about £2,700. Thank you to everyone for being such wonderful hosts.
