Sunday 27th January 2019

Fourth Sunday of Epiphany

In this season of Epiphany we look for the signs of God among us today. Let us continue to learn to recognise God’s presence, and in turn to allow ourselves to become signs of that presence to others, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

10.00am Parish Communion (Whiteleaf Scout Centre)

First Reading: Nehemiah 8 v 1-3, 5-6 & 8-10
As Ezra reveals the long-forgotten Law to the people, their dismay at their own failure is turned to joy when he explains that it is a good gift and that God will not only give the Law, but enable them to fulfil it

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12 v 12 -31a
This reading stresses that God gives us the gifts we need in order to fulfil what we are called to do.

Gospel: Luke 4 v 14-21
After Jesus reads from the prophet Isaiah in the synagogue the atmosphere is electric as he tells his listeners, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Hymns: 552, 658, 86, 163;   Communion: 297, 374, 420
Anthem: From the Rising of the Sun (F. A. Gore Ouseley)

3.00pm Evensong (St. Peter’s Chapel, Owlswick)
First Reading: 1 Samuel 3 v 1-20
Second Reading: Ephesians 4 v 1-16
Hymns: 484, 234, 239.   Psalm: 33v1-12.

Prayer of the Week
Lord God, whose compassion embraces all peoples, whose law is wisdom, freedom and joy for the poor, fulfil in our midst your promise of favour, that we may receive the gospel of salvation with faith and, anointed by the Spirit, freely proclaim it. Grant this though our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • All those who have suffered innocently as a result of their faith

  • Constructive and innovative solutions in easing political tensions in countries/areas such as Venezuela, the USA, The Middle East and the United Kingdom (Brexit)
  • All those who mourn the victims of genocide and that all may resolve to put an end to racism and all forms of discrimination.
  • The mission, ministry and congregational life of St. Peter’s Chapel, Owlswick.
  • Wellington Avenue & Well Lane (MR) Little Orchard Close (L), Little Park (PR)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:

Pew Moving and redecoration of St. Dunstan’s Church
Thank you to everyone who helped to prepare the church for redecoration. Work started on Monday January 14th and is going well. The pews will need to be moved to the other side of the church this Sunday, January 27th at 11.30am. If you or anyone else you know can help in this please can you ask them to come along. Many hands make light work as was the case on January 13th. The work is being undertaken by M. Simmonds Decorating Contractors and will take about 3 weeks. During this time services will continue as normal but in different locations. The 10 o’clock service will take place in the Whiteleaf Scout Centre in Courtmoor Close (please park in Mill Lane) and all the other services in the church hall. As far as possible it will be ‘business as usual’ and for health and safety reasons please do not go in to the church whilst the works are taking place. James

Dying Matters
Talking about death, dying and funerals raises big questions that it’s helpful to face at some point, but it can be hard to talk to family and friends. On Wednesday January 30th (10 am to 12 noon) or Thursday January 31st (7.30 – 9.30 pm) you are invited to come along to a session at 17 Wellington Avenue, Princes Risborough (home of Revs. Steve and Rose Williams) to think, chat and articulate these questions in a relaxed environment. A series of question cards are used to encourage conversations and to listen to others’ perspectives and experiences in small groups. The sessions are open for people of all faiths, doubts and none. To book a place on one of these sessions please contact Rev James Tomkins jamestomkins@btinternet.com 01844 275944 stating your preferred date.

Brand New Church Electoral Roll
Every six years the church electoral roll is completely revised. The electoral roll seeks to reflect church membership as closely as possible and provides a general barometer of the vibrancy of the worshipping community. Forms will be available and given out on Sunday February 3rd and need to be completed and returned by March 31st to the electoral roll officer Mrs Susanne Dodds, 34 Summerleys Road, Princes Risborough, HP27 9DT (01844 342746) or a scanned version including signature by email to susanned@onetel.com or please pass it to James or one of the churchwardens. If you do not receive a form please accept my apologies and complete and return a form that will be readily available initially at the 10 am service at the Whiteleaf Scout Centre and then in St. Dunstan’s and also in St. Peter’s Chapel, Owlswick. Thank you. Susanne Dodds.

If you (or your son/daughter) would like to consider being confirmed please contact James.
