Silent Prayer Meeting: Monday September 9th at 8pm
We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. Each meeting in the church hall lasts about 45 minutes. The meeting starts with some simple relaxation exercises, a short passage from the Bible to reflect upon in the half hour of silence, followed by a time of sharing of our experiences if people wish. James

Sunday 25th August 2019

Tenth Sunday after Trinity

Christ calls us to a new life, one that brings down the proud and raises up the lowly. In worship we come to him as equals and are sent out to share his love equally among all creation.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Isaiah 58 v 9b-end
Delight in the Sabbath and compassion for others are equal partners – we are both to accept God’s gracious gift of rest and to offer it to those in need.

Second Reading: Hebrews 12 v 18 – end
Christianity is not a faith of fear, but of wondrous glory, graced by a Saviour who shakes our priorities, encouraging us to focus on God’s truth.

Gospel: Luke 13 v 10-17
By healing a woman’s physical ailments Jesus restores her dignity, underscoring his argument with the authorities, that compassion has priority over rules.

Hymns: 684, 169, 366, 474

Communion: 196, 310, 83

6.00pm Owlswick Evensong

Readings: Isaiah 30 v 8-21, 2 Corinthians 9.

Hymns: 338, 366, 70, 333; Psalm 119 v49-56

Prayer of the week:

To the banquet of your kingdom, O God of the nations, you have invited people of every race and tongue. May all who are called to a place at your table come, by the narrow way, to the unending feast of life. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • A peaceful and constructive resolution to the troubles in Hong Kong

  • Brexit, that politicians may be aware of the most vulnerable in society and work for the good of all

Cuddesdon School of Theology and Ministry (CSTM)

CSTM covers a range of topics at an introductory undergraduate level to people who want to deepen their Christian discipleship, increase their knowledge of the Bible, church history and theology, or who might be exploring a sense of calling to ordained or licenced ministry.
The course is a three-year rolling programme so that you can start at the beginning of any term and sign-up term-by-term. Teaching takes place fortnightly on five Thursday evenings and one Saturday study day in each term. Students have the opportunity to engage with the life of Cuddesdon’s vibrant College community and make use of its considerable resources.
Those who wish to do so can submit written work for the Cuddesdon Certificate in Theology and Ministry or accreditation with the Durham University Common Awards programme, either of which can then be used as a basis for further study. Not all students do this, however – many choose simply to attend lectures for their own personal interest and development.
Whether for interest only, or to earn the Cuddesdon Certificate, CSTM offers an opportunity to learn more about the Christian faith, to ask questions and to develop one’s own skills for discipleship, all within a friendly, prayerful and supportive environment. More details are available from www.rcc.ac.uk/cstm James

Eighth Sunday after Trinity

“Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen”. In our worship today let us seek ways to deepen and strengthen our faith, and learn to live in hope, even when our vision is obscured.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Genesis 15 v 1-6
The Lord visits Abram in a vision, promising despite Abram’s protestations that, although he is childless, his descendants will be innumerable. Eventually, Abram believes God.

Second Reading: Hebrews 11 v 1-3 & 8-16
In faith Abraham obeyed God, even though he and Sarah would not live to see God’s promises fulfilled. Paul then goes on to refer to others who “died in faith”.

Gospel: Luke 12 v 32-40
Words of comfort and assurance, that God wants to give us the kingdom, are followed by an exhortation to live simply and charitably, relying on heavenly rather than earthly treasure.

Hymns: 19, 493, 340, 489
Communion: 342, 381, 82

11.30am Owlswick Holy Communion
Readings: Hebrews 11 v 1-3 & 8-16, Luke 12 v 32-40

6.00pm Evensong

Readings: Isaiah 11.10-12.end, 2 Corinthians 1.1-22
Hymns: 497, 447, 537; Psalm 108.1-6

Prayer of the week:

O, God, on whom our faith rests secure and whose kingdom we await, sustain us by word and sacrament and keep us alert for the coming of the Son of Man, that we may welcome him without delay. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • The victims of the mass shootings in the USA
  • A robust response to climate change with the continuing reports and urgent need to tackle this threat.
  • The easing of tensions in the Kashmir regions of India and Pakistan
  • The Anglican Church in India

Sustaining the Sacred Centre

Once again we hope you will support the various services during August under the umbrella of ‘Sustaining the Sacred Centre.’ Each day there is a short service of approximately 20 minutes to complement the existing services already held

The services, especially at Owlswick will reflect on the life and writings of Mother Julian of Norwich, a 14th Century woman of prayer who had a remarkable life and who wrote about her experiences of God in a book, still available, known as “Revelations of Divine Love.” What she learned is still relevant for us today. James and Rob

Sunday 11th August 2019

Once again we hope you will support the various services during August under the umbrella of ‘Sustaining the Sacred Centre.’ Each day there is a short service of approximately 20 minutes to complement the existing services already held.

More details are available from www.rcc.ac.uk/cstm and a few leaflets are available from the table by the south door. James

Rev. Jenny Edmans is once again organising the Rest-a-While Marquee at the Bucks County Show on Thursday 29th August.  This is always very well supported by attendees of the Show and Jenny is now organising the cakes and rota for the marquee and is asking for 20 cakes from each Deanery and volunteers to serve and chat to people on the day.  These are slots of one hour from 10.00am to 4.00pm. She needs hosts (to chat to people and clear tables) – two people for each of the following slots: 10.00am – 11.00am; 11.00am – 12 noon; 12 noon – 1.00pm; 1.00pm – 2.00pm. In addition she needs people to help serve the teas, coffee and cake throughout the day.

Volunteers can claim £5 towards the entrance cost to the show ground. Jenny is going to contact people who have helped in the past but she would be delighted if new people came forward to help! Her e-mail address is   jennyedmans@aol.com
