The 10 o’clock for babies, toddlers, children and young people is taking a break during the summer holidays. Please therefore make use of the children’s corner in church with books, colouring sheets, toys etc. Coffee and squash are served in the church hall after the 10.00 am service

The Church is open daily from at least 9.30-4.00pm.

Sunday 25th August 2019

Tenth Sunday after Trinity

Christ calls us to a new life, one that brings down the proud and raises up the lowly. In worship we come to him as equals and are sent out to share his love equally among all creation.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Isaiah 58 v 9b-end
Delight in the Sabbath and compassion for others are equal partners – we are both to accept God’s gracious gift of rest and to offer it to those in need.

Second Reading: Hebrews 12 v 18 – end
Christianity is not a faith of fear, but of wondrous glory, graced by a Saviour who shakes our priorities, encouraging us to focus on God’s truth.

Gospel: Luke 13 v 10-17
By healing a woman’s physical ailments Jesus restores her dignity, underscoring his argument with the authorities, that compassion has priority over rules.

Hymns: 684, 169, 366, 474

Communion: 196, 310, 83

6.00pm Owlswick Evensong

Readings: Isaiah 30 v 8-21, 2 Corinthians 9.

Hymns: 338, 366, 70, 333; Psalm 119 v49-56

Prayer of the week:

To the banquet of your kingdom, O God of the nations, you have invited people of every race and tongue. May all who are called to a place at your table come, by the narrow way, to the unending feast of life. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • A peaceful and constructive resolution to the troubles in Hong Kong
  • Students receiving exam results that they may be able to plan their next steps with hope and confidence
  • Brexit, that politicians may be aware of the most vulnerable in society and work for the good of all
  • Local historical societies and for the opportunity to discover the wonders of the past.
  • Speen CE First School, its pupils, staff, head and governors.
  • Sawmill Road (L) Dairymeade (Sp)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
    • Pam Johnson, Veronica Parker, Pam Strickland, Mary Copcutt, John Hobson, Mary Kent and Michael Hopkins
  • And also further afield for:
    • Alastair, Georgina Cole, Ginny Gibbs, Cathy Owen, Gail, Suzy Cooper, Jonathan Kelly, Joshua, Marj, Bill, Sue, Jo and Marriette
  • The recently departed:
    • Jean Stopps and Adrian Cornish
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • David Ramsay, Roy Pearce.

Cuddesdon School of Theology and Ministry (CSTM)

CSTM covers a range of topics at an introductory undergraduate level to people who want to deepen their Christian discipleship, increase their knowledge of the Bible, church history and theology, or who might be exploring a sense of calling to ordained or licenced ministry.
The course is a three-year rolling programme so that you can start at the beginning of any term and sign-up term-by-term. Teaching takes place fortnightly on five Thursday evenings and one Saturday study day in each term. Students have the opportunity to engage with the life of Cuddesdon’s vibrant College community and make use of its considerable resources.
Those who wish to do so can submit written work for the Cuddesdon Certificate in Theology and Ministry or accreditation with the Durham University Common Awards programme, either of which can then be used as a basis for further study. Not all students do this, however – many choose simply to attend lectures for their own personal interest and development.
Whether for interest only, or to earn the Cuddesdon Certificate, CSTM offers an opportunity to learn more about the Christian faith, to ask questions and to develop one’s own skills for discipleship, all within a friendly, prayerful and supportive environment. More details are available from www.rcc.ac.uk/cstm James

Church yews and tree planting
In September a couple of yew bushes that block the view of the church are being removed from the churchyard. In their place at the National Forest in Leicestershire six trees are being planted in their place. James
